Students use Wikipedia to share museum's resources[edit]

In January and February 2011, middle and high school students in The Children's Museum of Indianapolis Museum Apprentice Program completed a team-based project titled, "Sharing the Children's Museum's Treasures." The students researched five of the museum's notable objects while also learning Wikipedia. With the help of the museum's Wikipedian-in-Residence and other museum studies graduate students recently involved in the WikiProject Public art initiatives, students utilized detailed guides to learn how to contribute their research to Wikipedia. The program will serve as a case study for further research regarding ways to integrate Wikipedia into museum programming to more efficiently share quality museum research with the encyclopedia.

Museum studies students improve Museum theatre article[edit]

In February graduate students in the IUPUI museum studies course Museum Theatre were given the option of updating the Museum theatre Wikipedia article for a weekly assignment. Five students chose to complete this assignment and significantly expanded the article, leading it to appear as a Did You Know. The Did You Know appearance happened to take place during class time, allowing students to see their article on the main page as a group.

Indianapolis State Legislature passes motion supporting Wikipedia-Museum collaboration[edit]

On February 3, 2011, IUPUI museum studies students and course instructor Richard McCoy were recognized by the Indiana state legislation with a concurrent Resolution (HRC-18) sponsored by Senator Jim Merritt and Representative Tom Saunders. The Indiana Statehouse Wikipedia project continued the work of students who developed and launched the nation’s first organized effort to document public art information in Wikipedia. The first iteration of the Wikipedia Saves Public Art project (now WikiProject Public art) involved organizing the IUPUI public art collection within Wikipedia.
