Education pages on this wiki[edit]

consolidated outline[edit]

  • Education - landing page with tabbed menu, ~ 1 short paragraph about education programs, and big links to more information for specific audiences like w:Wikipedia:Education program
  • Education/About - (this will serve as a general "about" page and the place to point press to) a page with an overview of all education programs, stats, pointers to more specific about info such as media coverage, program history,
  • Education/Programs - canonical list of education programs by country and project, which serves also as the portal to join an existing program or start a new one.
  • Education/Resources - a well-curated page of the most relevant resources, aimed at program leaders: the print brochures, the create-a-pilot walkthrough, a primer on the EducationProgram extenion, and an overview of the portable training resources.
  • Education/Newsletter - This Month in Education, with links to its subpages and such
  • Education/Contact - Concise contact info to get in touch with people who can answer questions and/or redirect visitors to the right program leaders

It stops with October 2013.

Piotrus: I think a separate section for academic papers would be very useful. I was just wishing we had such a thing a few weeks ago. I'm not aware of any significant press coverage since October off the top of my head. Hello, Piotrus. I agree with you, too; it would be great to share academic research and writing on education.wikimedia.org. As we continue the process that Sage Ross (WMF) started of re-evaluating and re-organizing the contents of the education portal here on Ourteach wiki, we will add features requested by community members when it makes sense for us to be the ones to do so -- though, of course, as you know, you are always welcome and encouraged to do so yourself, since that is The Wiki Way. :) I've created the page Academic Papers under Resources > Learnings. Hello, again Piotrus. You are not the only person to request a map of educational programs on education.wikimedia.org. It is one of the features requested by community members that we agree would be really great to include here on Outreach wiki. An interactive map, like the one used by Wiki Loves Monuments here, would be ideal. I'll be reaching out to the mapmakers on Commons to see if they can support us in this. And I'll keep you posted. I've posted this map request on the w:Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop and I've personally reached out to some very talented cartographers -- NordNordWest, Kmusser, Yug, Planemad -- to see if they may be able to recommend a mapmaker to work with us on this, if not help us themselves. Update on the education portal[edit]

Sage and I, in collaboration with the Resources team of the Education Coop and the rest of the WMF education team, have been working hard on reforging the portal. We’re now at a place where we think it’s in a workable (and prettier) state.

To recap, Sage began this work in January of this year and his revamping of these pages has been underway for many months.

I will now be picking up where Sage left off since he has left the Wikimedia Foundation to work for the Wiki Education Foundation.

I am very grateful to Sage and everyone for their time and energy. But this work is not done yet! We welcome your feedback on what we've done so far and invite you to contribute content.

Organization of information[edit]

We’ve tried to strike a balance between (1) arranging all of the information in the portal in a coherent way so that people can find exactly what they are looking for, and (2) making it easy for people to jump in and find the most relevant things for them, even if they don’t already know just what they are looking for.

The main organization of the portal is represented by the top-level tabs.

Home[edit]

This is a simple landing page with news as well as just a few relevant links for general newcomers interested in getting involved in the Wikimedia/Education space. It links to a Get Involved page, which has direct pointers for visitors to the most useful ways to get started trying to do any of the main activities the Education portal is designed to support.

About[edit]

The About page that gives an overview of the main entities involved in Education in the Wikimedia context. There are subtabs that go into more detail about each of the three main groups: the WMF education team, the Coop, and the broad swath of Wikimedians doing education program-related work.

Countries[edit]

The Countries tab is the comprehensive list of where there are education programs/projects/initiatives going on. This was renamed from 'Programs' to 'Countries' because it seemed to be "a better general description of what this tab is all about" [1]. Each country (or region) has its own page, which lists all of the education activities we know of in that country. We also added an interactive ImageMap, developed by members of the Wikimedia cartography community, which allows visitors to click on a country and be directed to that country's page for more information. In development is a landing page that will be linked to any currently uncolored country that will invite visitors to start a program or tell us about educational work they're already doing.

Resources[edit]

The first main content tab is Resources. This section organizes the large number of available resources according to audience: resources “for program leaders” are those useful for anyone trying to get an education program off the ground. The resources “for educators” are the ones that are useful at the scale of planning and running an individual wiki assignment in a course. The resources “for volunteers” are the handful of things we have to help people learn how to effectively support courses (especially in a “Wikipedia Ambassador”-type role). The resources “for students” are the general materials we have to help new users learn how to make effective contributions to Wikipedia and other projects. The navigation for this tab is more complicated than the rest, due to the large number of resources we have and the necessity of breaking them down by target audience. The main tab contains for different second-level navigation bars (one for each group), and clicking an entry in any of them will send you into the view for that group. We’re not entirely pleased with this, but it’s the best we’ve been able to come up with so far.

Learnings[edit]

The Learnings tab organizes things that are more generally useful for people trying to run or improve a program: best practices (of which we have none compiled, so far), case studies, research and presentations in the “Library”, and the “program evaluation” section will cover the intersection between Wikimedia Foundation’s program evaluation work and education programs.

News[edit]

The 'Newsletter' tab was renamed to 'News' for length and specificity, since the subtabs now include Media Coverage as well. The new single page edition of the newsletter is the featured (and only) content on the News tab's landing page. The 'Newsroom' subtab remains the same, except for a new happy face. The 'Archives' are unchanged. The 'Media Coverage' was reorganized by year. And the 'Subscribe' page now includes the option to subscribe by email. An RSS feed is something we may look into down the road.

Contact[edit]

The Contact page is intended to be as simple as possible. It has direct contact information for the Wikimedia Foundation education team, and points visitors to the individual Country pages to find local contacts for any particular program. We redacted the contact information for Wikimedia Chapters, since it could be confusing.

Making additional changes[edit]

The portal is organized almost exclusively via a handful of navigation templates that are all based on Template:Navigation. It is relatively easy to reorganize the pages into different tabs and subtabs by changing these templates, without needing to move the pages themselves. I am happy to help with any further changes that are needed.

In terms of "What's Next?" well that's kind of up to all of us. :) Content development is crucial. There are number of pages that still say {{under construction}} or are completely blank. Reorganization is possible. If the current structure doesn't function well for us, we'll revisit and revise it. @AKoval (WMF): Overall, it's beginning to look and work very well indeed. Kudos on continuing Sage's great job, of bringing order to chaos.!
Small detail: Please change the color scheme of the Navigation tabs, to increase the contrast between text and background. The white text on lightgrey background is hard to read.
(To test new color palettes, plug the hex colors into http://snook.ca/technical/colour_contrast/colour.html for easy checking - look for "Yes" in the "WCAG 2 AA Compliant" box. :) (and, just google "contrast check" to find that page easily in the future ;) Thanks! @Quiddity, AKoval (WMF): I updated the colors in Template:Navigation using two additional templates: Template:Education/Colors/Gray and Template:Education/Colors/Blue. The new gray is WCAG AA compliant (thanks for the link to the online tool, Quiddity). A place to put helpful links[edit]

As I come across new and possibly relevant pages, I've been putting them here: Education/Reasons_to_use_Wikipedia#Further_reading

That page is transcluded here: Education/Benefits_and_challenges

This does not seem like the best place for them. They're buried and unfindable unless you know that they're there.

I'd like to put them on a new page all their own. But I'm not sure what to call it. Library? Bibliography? Works? References? Publications? Further reading?

Some of the links are wikipages, some are blog posts, but most are academic papers, studies, books, etc.

Questions:

  • What is the intended audience of these links?
  • What is their purpose of these links?
  • How would this page differ from the Bookshelf?
  • How would this page differ from the Media coverage page (a subpage of Education/News)?
  • What links, if any, should remain on the Reasons to use Wikipedia page?

Education/Brochures page questions: page title, other materials, and materials in languages other than English[edit]

Dear Outreachers,

At Wikimania, my team was asked where on this education portal do we share materials developed by educators and chapters. Aside from the (not very actively maintained) Bookshelf project, I don't think that we do (yet).

I would like to develop an international bookshelf or library for education resources here on Outreach wiki, and some months ago I started some conversations about this over at Talk:Education/Brochures. Specifically, I am asking about: 1. the title of the page, 2. other materials, and 3. materials in languages other than English.

Involvement of Wikiversities[edit]

Is the Wikiversity community involved in this program? To me it would seem more logical to promote also the Wikiversity to educators. In the current situation I only see information about Wikipedia. Timboliu (talk) 10:12, 11 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have written a small bank of exam questions at Wikiversity:Quizbank for a few introductory college courses, and am in contact with Openstax College about them adopting it for one of their physics textbooks. Hello Anna Koval (WMF), how do you think we could best continue this conversation? Is it for instance possible to share an example of a successfull Wikiversity project. I hear that Italy is successfull? Maybe we could share some success stories with the projectleaders in the chapters? Colors[edit]

Hi. Is there a meaningful reason for different tones of the same color? For instance, Brazil and other countries, basically countries in Latin America and Africa (as far as I could see), are depicted with a lighter green compared to other countries where there are active education programs. I noticed a warning editnotice on enwikipedia while listing an event, which suggested to contact this page if the organized programme was in certain countries (including mine). Wikimania 2019 is organized into 19 “spaces”, which are all accepting proposals for sessions. This email comes from the team organizing the Community Growth space.

We would like to invite you to submit a proposal to the Community Growth space because of the actions you’ve done around newcomers on wikis. The deadline for submission is June 1. See below for Community Growth submission topics and session formats. Topics and sessions have to be in English.

In the Community Growth space, we will come together for discussions, presentations, and workshops that address these questions:

  • What is and is not working around attracting and retaining newcomers?
  • How should Wikimedia activities evolve to help communities grow and flourish?
  • How should our technology and culture evolve to help new populations to come online, participate and become community members?

Recommended topics. While proposals related to all aspects of community growth and newcomer experience are welcome, the organizing team is particularly interested in proposals related to:

  • Research on recruitment, activation and retention.
  • Technological approaches
  • On- and off-wiki engagement strategies
  • Supporting diversity and cross-cultural newcomer experiences
  • Lessons learned from beyond Wikimedia, and
  • The future of newcomers and editing

If you are interested in seeing presentations around additional topics, but do not plan to submit a proposal, you can suggest additional topics here.

If your topic does not fit into our space, remember that there are 18 other spaces that could welcome you sharing your knowledge and perspective.

Types of session. We prefer sessions that are participatory, interactive, promote conversations, and give a voice to parts of our movement that are heard less often. We welcome the following session formats:

  • Roundtable discussion
  • Panel discussion
  • Lightning talk
  • Working session
  • Teaching session
  • Conference presentation

Poster submissions. Posters are also a good way to introduce a topic, or show some results of an action. Please consider submitting one!

Hello! I was wondering if the following challenge would interest anyone...

The existing Wikipedia page for the world's leading provider of coworking and flexible workspaces, IWG plc, has been graded a C-class in terms of quality.

IWG plc is a multinational corporation with a footprint in 106 countries, thousands of flexible workspace centres, 2.5 million customers and a valuation of $3.8 billion. However, the company is relatively unknown. Recently, due to the scandals of its chief competitor WeWork, it has been dubbed by the media as WeWork's "profitable rival."

But there is hardly any information on the company and its growth in 106 markets on Wikipedia.

The page has attracted very few contributors. Hence my reaching out to you: would the improvement of the page be a project that would be of interest as an educational project?
