Edit-a-thon definition[edit]

Honest question: is "edit-a-thon" a term coined specifically and exclusively for GLAM? The definition ("An edit-a-thon is a GLAM outreach event ...") in the introductory paragraph took me by surprise. Side note: I am so glad this was made! documentation is so helpful! Jessie, easy -- it's not :) I think GLAM is just the first group that got around to putting up a page about them. I've been thinking for a while about tidying up the structure of how the edit-a-thon concept is presented, and talking with people like User:Bluerasberry and User:Another Believer. I think it's pretty clear that the term can apply to a diverse array of things, so trying to define all the possible variants in one page is probably not the best way to go.
I'd like to create a very basic overview page at Edit-a-thon; after a general overview, it could link to pages like this one for more detailed writeups of how people have approached organizing them at different times, for different audiences, etc. -Pete (talk) 19:58, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, a related note -- apart from not being exclusive to GLAM, an edit-a-thon is also not necessarily an "outreach" event. While I personally prefer events that are oriented toward potential new contributors, it can also be valuable to run events whose primary audience is existing Wikimedians, and gives them an opportunity to work together in person and network without the distraction of having to help newbies. (At my last edit-a-thon, I was asked by a participant if I ever did "intermediate" events where participants could learn something more advanced than "here is how the history page works" etc. I'm not sure whether this model has been explored, but I believe it is worthwhile, and should not be "defined out" of edit-a-thons. -Pete (talk) 20:19, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nice little edit-a-thon video[edit]

I was just introduced to this nice 3-minute video of an edit-a-thon at Mount Holyoke College. It's promotional for the school, but also for Wikipedia. I'd like to put a link to it somewhere but I can't figure out where that link should go. Maybe someone else has an idea. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yE1cjGkHYU&feature=youtu.be -- Kosboot (talk) 11:28, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
