A WikiLyceum is a dedicated unit inside of an educational, cultural, or research institution (such as universities, GLAMs, and other nonprofits) that fosters wiki-based learning and digital literacy for the Wikipedia Education Program (Wikipedia Ambassador Program), and also free knowledge efforts more generally.

It is intended to function as an extremely lightweight and adaptable unit, its "office" most commonly occupying something like a desk or two at a university library, with usually only one full-time resident alongside a couple of student ambassadors/interns.

Role of Wikipedian in Residence for Education[edit]

Each WikiLyceum hosts a paid full-time ‘Wikipedian in Residence for Education’, whose duties include:

  • coordinating the Wikipedia Education Program at the institution itself
  • doing broader outreach as a super-ambassador for a number of classes outside of their own institution, taking on both the role of Wikipedia Regional Ambassador for classes in nearby geographies, and also for more distant classes which match their institution's departmental strengths
  • holding instructional workshops, editathons, and special content initiatives
  • ensuring educators, librarians and instructional technologists receive fellowship recognition for their work in the Wikipedia Education Program
  • developing and leading teams of primarily student ambassadors/interns for the Wikipedia Education Program

Requirements of WikiLyceum accreditation[edit]

The WikiLyceum residents will each be members of a community of practice working group, operating cross-institutionally to develop standards for their shared work, and will between them equitably allocate super-ambassador-level supervision of classes participating in the Wikipedia Education Program..

As a major part of its accreditation, and in the spirit of free knowledge sharing across institutions, each WikiLyceum will also commit a major section of its work toward the assistance of educational programs outside of their own walls.
