Summary: After a pilot phase, from November 2016 to July 2017, WikiEducation started again in Côte d'Ivoire few months ago, leveraging lessons learned from the previous edition. Things started slowly in February but, since June, the education program has been up and running in 3 Universities.

Les Classes Wikipédia (Wikipedia Classes in French) are training sessions teaching students from higher education how to create and improve articles on Wikipedia. Classes take place one every week, are 3-hours long each, and are taught during 5 weeks. During sessions trainers make use of WikiEducation Syllabus. Based on findings from the pilot phase, the syllabus was adapted to fit better our context.

3 Universities enrolled[edit]

From February to April, focus was laid upon preparing classes. This implied, among other things, contacting universities formally, recruiting and training, selecting learners, etc. In the beginning of may 2018, Wikipedia Classes officially started taking place within tree universities:

  • Houphouët-Boigny National Polytechnic Institute (LARIT / LABTIC);
  • Institute of Communication Sciences and Techniques (ISTC-Polytechnique);
  • Virtual University of Côte d’Ivoire (UVCI).

Wikipedia as a model of teaching[edit]

Teaching citizenship values and employability skills through Wikipedia (Wiki Indaba 2018)

Because working on Wikipedia has its singularity and own requirements such as courtesy, verifiability, notability, Wikipedia classes are used as a model of teaching. Through these classes, learners are taught a wide array of capabilities ranging from intangible citizenship values to practical modern skills.
