Public Domain Day in Europe 2026
European Public Domain Day 2026 on January 15 in Brussels

On the first day of each new year, a wealth of heritage enters the public domain. This material is perfect for being made as freely accessible as possible – though this doesn’t always happen. With Public Domain Day, we provide organisations with an annual platform to share knowledge and good examples of opening up this material and making it reusable. Let's celebrate the public domain with like-minded people across Europe!
Who is it for? Public Domain Day welcomes anyone who might engage with public domain collections – from collection managers and service providers to researchers and policymakers. It’s the perfect opportunity to get inspired and stay informed about developments beyond our borders.
What will we do? For the 2026 edition, we’re once again teaming up with (inter)national partners to create an exciting programme featuring voices from both home and abroad. What can you expect?
After a plenary kick-off with an inspiring keynote speech and the first presentations, you can choose between two parallel tracks: an international track focusing on the policy side of the public domain, and a Belgian track centred on (re)using public domain material. The afternoon will also be held plenary – with content that you can help to shape yourself.
