Mapping Heritage Buildings on Wikidata and Wiki Heritage Fellowship
Mapping heritage buildings on Wikidata
As part of efforts to promote open access to cultural heritage data, the Heritage Conservation Integration User Group, in collaboration with Wikimedia community members in Nigeria and ICOMOS Nigeria, recently conducted a training focused on mapping heritage buildings on Wikidata. The project brought together Wikimedians and heritage professionals to enhance the visibility of Nigeria’s built heritage on open platforms.
Participants were introduced to creating and editing items on Wikidata, with special focus on documenting heritage buildings. They also learned how to generate SPARQL queries to visualize these buildings on interactive maps. This integration of structured data and geospatial tools empowers professionals and the public alike to access and explore Nigeria’s rich architectural legacy through Wikidata.
Introducing the Wiki Heritage Fellowship
The Wiki Heritage Fellowship is a newly launched initiative by the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. In collaboration with a youth leadership organization and the Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau, the campaign seeks to train heritage professionals in the digitization of archives and records.
The fellowship was met with overwhelming interest, receiving 576 applications from across Nigeria. After a rigorous jury review, 12 fellows will be selected to participate in the pilot program. The initiative aims to build a new generation of digital archivists committed to the preservation and open sharing of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
This fellowship marks a significant step toward sustainable digital heritage practices in Nigeria, supporting the broader goals of the GLAM-Wiki movement.
