WikiGap in Albania 2025, and essential initiatives for free knowledge
ByWikiGap Tirana in 2025
For the 8th year, on March 4, 2025, Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group (WoALUG) organized the WikiGap Tirana bringing together 10 participants to improve the representation of women on Albanian Wikipedia. This year, contributors wrote and expanded articles about Albanian women from the 1920s to the 1940s highlighting their historical impact.
This event was organized in collaboration with the Swedish Embassy in Albania and the General Directorate of Archives in Tirana allowing contributors to have access to historical material and information to enrich the articles. We had the honor to have the Swedish Ambassador, Niklas Ström along with two guest speakers to speak about the gender gap in society.
The guest speakers: Etleva Sheshi, Director of the Gender Equality Department at the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, and Ines Leskaj, Executive Director of the Albanian Women Empowerment Network, spoke about gender equality policies in Albania and discussed the importance of closing the gender gap in knowledge representation.
Participants learned how to edit Wikipedia and created and improved articles to increase the presence of women in Albanian history on the platform.
I edit Wikipedia 2025: Improving articles on the Albanian Wikipedia
The I Edit Wikipedia 2025 campaign brought together a group of contributors to increase content quality on Albanian Wikipedia both from Albania and Kosovo. 12 editors were encouraged to edit and improve 73 and created 2 new articles, focusing on topics related to Wikipedia editing and content improvement.
To train new contributors, we invited the community to participate in three online meetings to learn basic editing practices. These meetings aimed to support newcomers, increase engagement, and encourage them to increase the quality of articles.
By reviewing, expanding, and adding references, participants strengthened the reliability of Albanian Wikipedia as a valuable knowledge platform.
