CommonsDB progress and hackathon contributions
Wikimedia Sverige is participating as a content partner (along with Europeana) in the EU funded CommonsDB project. It aims to become a registry of public domain and openly licenses, making it easier for anyone to verify the copyright status of an image. It builds on the International Standard Content Code (ISCC), a perceptual hash of a media file, making it possible to detect similar images even if they are slightly distorted. An introductory blog post has been published on Diff earlier giving a deeper introduction.
In March, Wikimedia Sverige joined the Wikimedia Northwestern hackathon in Arnhem. A prototype that shows how an uploader can get help during the upload was improved (see the video). A longer hackathon blog post was also published on Diff.
Also in March, the milestone of one million declared images in the registry was passed. For declared images, we have now started to add the ISCC code as structured data on Commons. While there is plenty more to do to have all media from Wikimedia Commons in the registry, it can already show the potential both for Wikimedia and external reusers.
