The Prado en femenino III: women in art

The third ‘El Prado en femenino’ edit-a-thon, organised by the Prado Museum and Wikimedia Spain, once again brought together people with an interest in art, history and free knowledge. The event focused on raising the profile of women in art collections.

Around 10 people took part in this edition, between the guided tour of the exhibition and the Wikipedia editing session. They helped to improve around 20 articles on women artists, patrons, collectors and figures linked to the art world.

A guided tour that offered new insights into the museum

The day began with a guided tour of the El Prado in femenino III exhibition, led by curator Noelia García Pérez. The activity generated great interest among those attending, who were able to discover first-hand the stories, contexts and female figures linked to the museum’s collections. The tour was met with great enthusiasm from the participants, taking place in an atmosphere of learning and active engagement.

Editing Wikipedia to raise the profile of women in the arts

Following the visit, the 3rd ‘El Prado en femenino’ Edit-a-thon was held in the museum’s library, El Casón del Buen Retiro. Participants worked collaboratively to improve and create Wikipedia articles.

The atmosphere was highly engaging and productive, with a particular focus on adding references, expanding content and enhancing the representation of women in the encyclopaedia. In total, around 20 articles were edited, helping to boost the visibility of female artists, patrons and collectors on Wikipedia.

The editing session took place with active participation and a steady pace of work. The participants contributed to the collaborative improvement and creation of content on Wikipedia.

Open access and gender perspectives at the Prado Museum

'El Prado en femenino' is part of the Museo Nacional del Prado’s efforts to reinterpret its collections from a gender perspective, highlighting the role of women in art history. For Wikimedia Spain, this collaboration enables us to continue expanding free knowledge with new voices, perspectives and content that enrich Wikipedia and make it more diverse and representative.

Edit-a-thons like this one demonstrate the value of collaboration between cultural institutions and the Wikimedia community. By pooling our experiences, learning and joint editing efforts, we can improve access to free knowledge.
