Opening: the first German Wikipedian in Residence

[edit]

Berlin, the dazzling myth, is celebrating its 775 birthday this year. Myths are man-made, as everybody knows, but who made the Berlin myths? The answer is given in the exhibition “The BerlinMakers” in Berlin central museum for metropolitan history Stiftung Stadtmusuem Berlin. And what would be a better birthday present than a ticket to the museum 2.0 open to everybody at any time? In mid-July of 2012 the first Wikipedian in Residence will start at the museum and help to transfer into Wikipedia all the information gathered on 75 celebrities of Berlin history and 700 Berliners chosen at random. This is, of course, a heap of photographs and new material for articles. Moreover, both sides are open to develop new ideas to promote the idea of Free Knowledge during the whole year. Will be continued. --Barbara Fischer (WMDE) (talk) 13:38, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

October 2012

[edit]

So, I am not sure this is too noteworthy, especially given WLM and some of the other major projects from September, but I recently received a private, "behind-the-scenes" tour of the Central Library, partly to photograph the building's interior and exterior and partly to begin a collaboration with as part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries. More than 170 photographs were uploaded to Commons as part of Wikipedia Takes Portland 2012 and Wiki Loves Monuments 2012. Last week en:User:EncMstr and I met with MCL staff to plan the Multnomah County Edit-athon, which will be hosted by MCL at the Central Library on October 27th. You can view relevant Wikipedia meetup links at:

In no way will I be offended if this update is not included in any report... I am just offering suggestions in case more material is better than less! --Another Believer (talk) 17:16, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Clay Shirkey on openness

[edit]

I saw this interesting summary of a talk by Clay Shirkey in the Chronicle of Higher Education. In this paragraph he's talking about data, but it could be images as well:

“There’s all kinds of hidden value in our systems which you can’t even understand until you open them up to see what people do with them,” Mr. Shirky said. “The thing that drives me craziest in conversations with large institutions about large data sets is they want to know in advance what will happen. Why should we open up our data? To which the answer is, you open up your data to see where the value is. It’s the value you can’t even predict until you try it that you get back.”

Might be worth mining Shirkey's work for more of this. Here's the article: The Real Revolution Is Openness, Clay Shirky Tells Tech Leaders -- Kosboot (talk) 14:25, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

December 2012

[edit]

Hi all,

Maybe you want to post my request for feedback for GLAM statistics:

"I'm part of the GLAMToolset project of Europeana funded by Wikimedia Netherlands, France and the UK[1]. Part of that project is to gather and report requirements for good statistics on the use of GLAM uploaded material to Wikimedia Commons. This report will be presented and taken into consideration by the analytics team of the Wikimedia Foundation. They can in turn start developing accurate tools for presenting the requirements of GLAMs.

I've create a survey to gather the hard data on what GLAMs need in terms of these statistics. The research will be very much improve by answers from GLAMs and Wikipedians in residence. Please fill in the survey by clicking the link below (+/- 10min.).

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGNMQ2hMMXFBQ0RIYnJtcmhRQm5oN3c6MQ

Please forward this mail to your local contacts at Wikimedia-minded GLAMs if they are not on this mailing list.

Thanks for helping us in our research!"

Hi, I think this should be linked in an editnotice on this wiki. --Elitre (talk) 13:43, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
