Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum collaboration[edit]

A couple of my fellow Wikipedians have suggested that I mention the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum collaboration to the GLAM Newsletter and, considering that I am the Wikipedian in Residence, I though that I'd mention what we've been doing together here. First of all, there is a collaboration on Wikimedia Commons that has already resulted in the uploading of over 11,000 photographs and scans of documents. Also, there is the new WikiProject Gerald Ford on English Wikipedia which has completed preliminary tagging and assessment and already had a number of successful DYK articles (as well as one more in the works), and a WikiProject on Wikisource focused on transcribing scanned documents. On top of all this, we have also had a successful edit-a-thon (photos here). I don't know how exactly all of this should be formatted, but I thought it would be nice if you could work a mention in for the collaboration in the next GLAM Newsletter. Thanks so much! (If you need or want to contact me, please leave me a message at either my English Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons talk page: just follow the link(s) from my user page here on Outreach: thanks!) I see it is added here, it seems fine to me! :-) Romaine (talk) 13:46, 10 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Switzerland Report[edit]

May I ask you to also include the Switzerland report?. Maybe you could also set it up a pre-defined report template for the future - Many thanks. Beat Estermann (talk) 21:09, 4 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Added! The Switzerland report will be in the newsletter. Thanks! Romaine (talk) 13:47, 10 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion, it is used in Spain report. Romaine (talk) 22:27, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

May 2013[edit]

I know that several Amsterdam hackathon participants worked on GLAM-related tools - Maarten Dammers was there, for instance! Sharihareswara (WMF) (talk) 12:03, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Example: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Thread:Talk:Amsterdam_Hackathon_2013/What_I_did_in_the_hackathon/reply_(9) Jean-Fred's work. Sharihareswara (WMF) (talk) 14:54, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your suggestion. I Personally do not have knowledge about it and it appears that the GLAM coordinator in the Netherlands has neither. Maybe it is good to have a special story purely focused on GLAM related tools, if you have knowledge or know who to write to, please do. Romaine (talk) 23:48, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

June[edit]

Hi, I'm one of the State Library of NSW people working on our collaborative wikipedia project - would you be interested in an article for the June edition about the experiences of a GLAM institution having a Wikipedian in Residence and running a Wikipedia project? Aliaretiree and I would be the co-authors. Rubicon49bce (talk) 05:08, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Rubicon49bce, To answer your question: yes, we are certainly interested in articles about that subject. The subject was already covered and I had limited time, but if you have a story next time, just write about it! The handiest way to start is in the newsroom. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 02:16, 8 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

July 2013[edit]

I've just received the latest issue of the periodical Fontes Artis Musicae, the journal of the International Association of Music Libraries (the latest issue is dated January-March 2013--they're always a little behind). The lead article "RIdIM: Cataloguing Music Iconography Since 1971" talks about the Répertoire International d'Iconographie Musicale, an international project devoted to cataloging iconography that has musical content (for example, an image of a person playing an instrument). The article talks about its conversion from being a local database to an freely accessible online database. When possible, the database links to images on an institution's website, but when that's not available, it links to the Commons. It even mentions the 18,000 images provided by the Walters Art Museum to the Commons.

I mention this as a notice for "in the news." However, I've known of this project since the 1980s and even know at least one of the people in charge of it. Might this be an opportunity to foster a greater collaboration with GLAM? -- Kosboot (talk) 01:55, 5 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tartupedia[edit]

A project like Monmouthpedia. I've noticed the project called in Estonian "Tartupeedia" (in english "Tartupedia"). I've started a regular correspondence with Raul Veede (the organizer) that he've overwhelmed me with information about the project in English. In this way everyone can know about this. If you want I'll send you the Raul's text in English.

December 21, 2013

  • I : Hi, I would like to know what is the status of the project "Tartupeedia" now. I have read also you userpage Kasutaja:Oop/Tartupeedia/Tartupeedia_tööplaan where you say that "Oktoobri lõpp 2013: projekti eelarve järgmiseks aastaks purki, rahataotlus WMF-ile (ja võib-olla kuhugi veel)". Which is the project budget for the next year? I would like to be notified of any updates or changes.

December 22, 2013

  • Raul Veede : The project is going on well. While we haven't pushed the QR part much, we have run some smaller contests and one big, and the results of the almost-year-long photo contest are going to be announced in January.

We've got some support from the city government (money for the travelling exhibition, prizes and free premises for the award ceremony in January). We have started cooperation with several GLAM institutions in the city, which is, of course, a wider theme but also concerns the city and Tartupeedia (Vanemuine theater, Tartu Art Museum, Estonian Sports Museum, etc; we're going to meet the folks at Estonian National Museum in January).

We've held some lectures and workshops in museums (Estonian Print Museum) and city district societies (Supilinna Selts, Karlova Selts). While all our efforts to engage new contributors haven't been very successful, we're trying to figure out new methods to engage people and improve the content - we'd like to have decent articles at least in Estonian and English before we launch the QR codes. And we've found a new guy who is interested in the organizatory work which we have in abundance.

Project budget for the next is not yet ready, as we're still finishing our chapter's budget and grant application to WMF. We'll apply to some local sources, too (next meeting with a potential sponsor is scheduled in January). But I can let you know about it as soon as I'll know it myself.

We have a project page in the wiki of Wikimedia Eesti, the Estonian chapter of Wikimedia movement (amongst other things, I'm a board member), and a portal on Estonian Wikipedia:
    https://et.wikimedia.org/wiki/Tartupeedia
    https://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portaal:Tartupeedia

We don't have an English page yet, though, as we have initially concentrated our efforts on the Estonian part. After all, we must have content there that could be translated into the other languages, before we start with directing readers there via the QR codes.

This project was reflected in our annual grant application to Wikimedia Foundation for 2013, and will be part of the next one for 2014. We have received a lot of support from several enterprises and GLAM institutions (mostly as prizes). Tartupeedia has been reflected in Estonian media but we haven't put much effort to the international media because we still have to go for the articles about Tartu in other languages - we're currently just developing the Estonian versions.
    https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:WM_EE/2013

We haven't gone into producing QR plaques yet (although the indoor codes on paper are used in Estonian Sports Museum). Hence, we don't know who might produce the plaques in Estonia, and hence we do not know the exact costs. . As they seem to be quite simple in nature, I suspect it might be better to produce them locally, but who knows.

We'd also very much like to build a free WiFi all over the midtown, but that would be a large and expensive project, to be made in joint effort with the city government. So it will not be our first priority. I don't know if other citypedias have used free WiFi, and it would be very interesting to know. As far as I see it, it would be very beneficial for the tourists. Mobile data connections are relatively cheap in Estonia and there are many free WiFis in the town (including the city government's) but the foreigners won't have a local carrier and it is tedious to walk around the town, moving from one WiFi to another, often having to log in or accept another set of terms. Thus, a unified WiFi would be good and could be advertised. Still, there are many technical problems (starting from the locals using it for P2P connections and ending with taking care of the equipment in following years).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Tartupeedia_punane.svg is one version of the official logo. For all images, see: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Tartupedia

We also have a somewhat competitive project arranged by one of the state institutions - Ettevõtluse Arendamise Sihtasutus, Enterprise Estonia - that has established QR-plaques on 100 tourism objects all over Estonia. Those codes refer to their own tourism site http://www.visitestonia.com that gives more tourist-oriented information in less languages than Wikipedia ideally could. But amonst theo ther things, they cover some of the objects we are also interested in, like the very house where I work in - the oldest wooden house in Tartu, Uppsala maja.
