The widow of behavioral scientist Robert G."Bob" Kinkade, Joan also worked with Bob on a variety of projects over a span of more than 40 years, ranging from assisting him in his role of system developer for a National Information System for Psychology (NISP), a notable R & D (resach and development) program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and conducted by the staff of the American Psychological Association (APA) beginning in 1969 until 1975. Prior to her years as Program Information Officer the NISP program, Joan had served as supervisory Technical Editor on the Journal of Experimental Psycology, supervising two other technical editors in production of the bi-monthly journal.
Joan joined the staff at APA central office headquarters in Waghington , D.G. while she was yet pursuing her bachelor's degree from American University with a BA in English, and dual minors in journalism and psychology. It took Joan more than a dozen years to earn her BA from American U, in 1976, during which interval she also attended Kent State University, University of Maryland, and University of Arizona.
Joan and Bob Kinkade first crossed paths when the NISP program was initiated at APA following on thevheelsvofvthe Project oon Science Information Exchane in Psychology, A Lon term reach project whose principal investigators were William D. Garvey and Belver Griffith.m
Working with Dr. Kinkade, who earned his PhD in psychology from Ohio State University in 1961, (his having there become a second generation pioneer in human factors engineering through his research in the area of aviation safety at Wright Pattern Air Force Base, generally recognized as "the birthplace of human factors engineering (hfe) orvergonomics). " Bob enjoyed an international reputation for expertise in human factors application in military system s developments projects,after having coo edited with Harold P. Van Cott the 1972 revision of the Human Engineering Guide to Equipment Design.while both we're employed at the American Institutes for research. in fact both Dr. Kinkade and Joan reported directly to Van Cott during the early days of NiSP.
