note about activity level[edit]

Hello folks, I'm mostly concentrating on enWiki at the moment. I'm interested in the Bookshelf, but may spend most of my efforts working on materials for that space, elsewhere... the bookshelf-project-page here for that effort seems to have gone semi-dormant in 2012, even though the Bookshelf-page itself is still reasonably active.

In other words, please feel free to leave me a message here, but if I don't respond promptly, joggling my elbow with a talkback note at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:74.192.84.101 will get my attention. Thanks for improving outreach, see you around. 74.192.84.101 13:24, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

question redux[edit]

Hello. PiRSquared17 (talk) 17:53, 19 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy again, fancy seeing you.  :-)   As you might have guessed, I was totally excited when I ran across this wiki: finally, the place that cares about recruiting new editors! <squeee> WP:RETENTION is primarily interested in retaining existing 99+edit folks (narrow goal subtly but crucially distinct from the broad goal of 'retaining' new folks with 1+edit under their belts), and doubly-especially existing folks that already are steadily generate 99+edits/mo. Which I support, of course, and can work to help, but is not enough for me, since I want N-fold *more* Good Egg editors than we have now, not *just* keeping the current 120k/30k/3k we have now, to stay satisfied/content. Around here at outreachWiki though, it kinda looks like the regulars have settled on a very specific WP:LOCALCONSENSUS goal of recruiting new Museum Head Curators, new University Deans Of The Graduate School Of Such-n-Such, new Juilliard Profs, etc.
Which are all fine and worthy goals, of course, and I support them in the abstract, though in practice I prolly cannot do much to help, since I don't happen to personally know any head curator / college dean / music profs. Further, from scanning the old village-pump-stuff, I get a pretty strong sense that, not only are the bookshelf-things not *meant* for low-caste anons to be editing (hence the use of PDF/Youtube output-formats and proprietary InDesign/videoEditor input-tools), but plenty of folks here would be happy if outreachWiki were locked down like deWiki. Uggghhh.
Point being, there was somebody here named Mono (since retired from outreachWiki on various grounds), who bangvoted back in Jan'13 to merge this wiki into Meta, but folks here said that would be wrong, and instead, they would be happier if all the various outreach-related efforts, which are currently spread across distinct places at enWiki and metaWiki and a few other spots, could be merged over to here. My scheme for a Jungle-of-Wikipedia Survival Manual would fit, and even the WP:TEAHOUSE (plus integration with #wikipedia-en-help for AfC) might be considered a broad form of outreach. In the end though, the result was no consensus: outreachWiki did not merge, but also, nothing external was merged with *it* that I saw.
The overall goal, of having a unified place for all outreach-related work, broadly construed (glam + bookshelf + wp:retention + wp:teahouse + various editor training & community fun stuff), seems fine to me. The alternative overall goal, of having a unified place for all institutional-level WMF-funded-with-cash outreach-related work, narrowly construed (glam + one or two other things), also seems fine to me. But I don't understand *which* overall goal folks here are supporting. Is it goal#1, broad? Or is it, as I'm thinking might be the case, goal#2, narrow? Or maybe it is goal#3 entirely, and my quick skim of the pages missed the boat. Have you spent enough time here to know my answer? If not, and nobody takes me up on my outreach-village-pump question, do you know one of the regulars here that would be a good person to approach directly, on their user-talkpage? Danke. 74.192.84.101 13:24, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure of the exact scope of this project. The Main Page seems to be the only page about the wiki itself. Someone from the WMF would probably be able to answer your questions, e.g. User:Sage Ross (WMF). Do you think this wiki should be merged into Meta? I don't like the idea of creating new meta-projects for different subjects, but I'm fine with this if others prefer to have their own wiki. m:Why creating new wikis is a bad idea. I responded at the village pump.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 16:39, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Sage, I will peek. PiRSquared, how can I have an opinion about merging, if I don't even know what this wiki is for?  :-)   It's apparently related to outreach, and some of the folks hinted that metaWiki might have some outreach-related-functions bureied in it somewhere, and I *know* that enWiki has some stuff-I-would-call-outreach at least (and others here agree). Anyhoo, to the pump. Danke for the responses, folks. 74.192.84.101 12:15, 25 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
