IRC discussion on student clubs

[edit]

Hey everyone! I want to schedule an IRC discussion for those of us interested in student clubs to brainstorm some ideas on how this can be an effective international community. Interest? Jwild (talk) 18:09, 22 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes!
The hour will have to suit the majority of participants. I'm in UTC+2. --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 18:24, 22 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Agreed! I think evenings might be best for most - so maybe a 19:00UTC? Happy to amend that, and we can potentially have two conversations if needed. Jwild (talk) 18:40, 22 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
What channel would this be in? Regards, Rock drum (talk · contribs) 19:56, 22 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Pick a channel and time and I will be there. I would love to share with people my experience at JMU and with helping the Imperial College society, 92.14.168.4 09:44, 24 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
The proposed date/time is fine for me. I look forward to it! Issyl0 (talk) 13:02, 25 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
If there are any Canadian Universities that are interested in starting student clubs would be interested in getting involved. Supposedly McGill has one and I have tried to email members but have not received a response. I do not us IRC... --Jmh649 (talk) 14:14, 26 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hopefully some reps from our friends up north can join! If you want to learn how to use IRC let me know - otherwise, we'll post the notes from the meeting up on this wiki afterwards. :) Jwild (talk) 15:06, 26 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Purpose of student clubs

[edit]

I see on the main page that student clubs are for growing the number of editors on Wikipedia. However, that does not mean that student clubs cannot do activities such as making GLAM partnerships and the like, right? After all, individuals do so, why not student clubs. I have started and promoted Club Wikipedia with this in mind as well as basic editing work. You can see this on the description of the club on the main page. I dont see this as a conflict with Wikimedia chapters as there is plenty of work to go around!Thelmadatter (talk) 14:44, 16 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your comment - I 100% agree that the student clubs should be able to take on whatever activities they find most engaging which contribute to the Wikimedia mission! GLAM, as an example, is most certainly one such activity which falls in line with this mission. There are a whole slew of example activities on the Student_Organizations/Activities page which are compatible to the mission of knowledge creation and sharing!
So, do you think we should reword the statement on the main page to be more inclusive? I think it's important to be explicit that we want the student clubs to be productive and proactive in creating content (as opposed to being purely social groups), but I was surprised you took GLAM to be out of that scope since at the end of the day it is encouraging content contribution. Do you have a suggestion on how we could make this more clear? Thanks so much for your support and help with this! Jwild (talk) 16:25, 16 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, definitely. I think it will be easier to form groups if we show that involvement with Wikipedia/Wikimedia is more than sitting around and writing.189.230.201.113 17:13, 16 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thelmadatter are talking about an specifically topic: an activity of their founded club, the Wikipedia Club in the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey campus Mexico City (ITESM). She wants to make a GLAM initiative with the Museo del Objeto (Object Museum or MODO), but, the internal rules of ITESM, says their student clubs need to be independent of any organization. I'm very agree with the GLAM initiatives conduced by Wikipedia Clubs (we need too much hands to work), but I'm remarking also: Wikimedia local chapters (in this case, WM-MX) needs to be involved (at least informed) about the work of our colleagues and collaborating in their initiatives, supporting and following the critical mass. We're not an obstacle, we're a big team with a same objective. Warmly, --ProtoplasmaKid (talk) 18:21, 16 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Taking off the list of student clubs

[edit]

No offense Woliff, but I hope youre not done editing the front page. It looks rather boring now and I dont see a clear link to a list of student club pages.Thelmadatter (talk) 13:10, 20 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

None taken. I agree that the page should be more engaging, and we'll work on getting some images up there. If users like the page creation process we're trying out, the list of clubs will be automatically populated as users make pages (using category tree). If it turns out the page creation guides aren't helpful after all, we'll have to rethink the main page entirely.
One reason that I made the list of student clubs a separate page was that as more organizations join in, I would expect that listing them all on the main page wouldn't work as well. I'll try to make the link to the existing list more prominent if you think it would help. Thanks much for your suggestions! Wolliff (talk) 17:55, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Clubhouse page

[edit]

Im trying to create something of a site for the Mexico City club but Im finding this process very confusing. I had a devil of a time finding the index after I created the main page and then the main page after I went back to the index. Could the index show that a page has already been created? Is this index only for the creation of the site or it is supposed to have some kind of function after the pages have been created?Thelmadatter (talk) 20:15, 20 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
