Open Foundation West Africa Introduces KIWIX Offline to the National Association of Graduate Teachers
Author: Ruby D-Brown
Summary: Considering the significant importance of Kiwix in the education system of Ghana, training programs are being organized in various institutions across the country under the Kiwix4schools Mini Fund Program.
Even though more than 58.8% of the world is connected to the internet today, the majority of them stem from the West. Many students and teachers across Africa are continually faced with the challenge of accessing online educational resources that the internet offers to enhance their teaching and studies respectively.
While measures are being put in place to enhance ICT learning in schools, the challenges are still prevalent. Lots of teachers cannot afford to be online due to high internet costs which are not sustainable for continuous learning.
Kiwix is an offline tool that brings Wikipedia and other educational resources to many users around the world without the barriers posed by the internet today. Many are aware that despite the glaring problem faced by our education system, Kiwix is bringing hope to many users who are limited by access to the internet and ensuring accessibility to knowledge on local servers, Kiwix devices, and mobile phones.
In our quest to increase awareness and acceptance of Kiwix in the Ghana Education System, we introduce Kiwx under our Kiwix4schools Mini Fund Program, which saw the deployment and training of 14 senior high schools across the country. We also seized the opportunity to train the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) in the Kwahu West Municipality, Eastern Region, led by our current president of the Kumasi Wiki Hub during their quarterly meetings in June. In the program, the Eastern Regional Chairman of NAGRAT, headteachers, and teachers of various Senior and Junior high schools, and approximately 50 members of the association were present. For most of them, this was their first time learning about Kiwix, and gladly embraced the idea. The feedback was awesome and they were happy to welcome Kiwix at the doorsteps of their schools.
