The Setswana Wikipedia Challenge will take place Oct 17th through Nov 31st 2011, in campuses in Botswana.

Curriculum for Training

What is Wikipedia/Wikimedia?

• provide a broad overview of Wikipedia and Wikimedia including:
  • Wikimedia Vision
  • Funding and running the projects
• the community (all volunteers!) and culture of Wikipedia.
• why should i contribute/edit wikipedia?

Principles of Wikipedia, Policies and guidelines

Elaborate the principles of Wikipedia including:

• non infringement with copyright and plagiarism
• Good faith collaboration, respect and civility
• Neutral point of view
• No Original Research
• Verifiability
• Notability (assuming the list of topics is given in advance, this can be mentioned very briefly)

Introduction to Editing: the interface

A hands on demo to the participants about the inetrface and functionality on Wikipedia including:

• The user account
• talk pages (user and article)
• communal discussion pages (including one for the competition, to be set up)
• watchlist etc.

Intruduction to Editing: Wiki Markup

A practical demonstration to the participants about the wiki markup. I suggest each participant have a printed version of the markup notes

Beyond Editing

explore some of the other ways participants can contribute to wikipedia other than editing: The handout you came with to Kenya should be handy and a resource
