Scope[edit]

Open Foundation West Africa is an NGO duly registered in Ghana and seeks to extend the reach of Open Movement Activities in West Africa, Open Education and Education Programs, Digitizing open resources, preserving cultural and heritage items for educational purposes and promoting contents about the West African region and existent countries. The NGO is willing and ready to take up this task of improving access and the quality of education within the region. We intend to craft a project that will enable the youth make use of Wikimedia Projects while also contributing to them. We hope that through this we will be able to imbibe in them, the spirit of volunteerism and the passion to develop resources about their country and or descent for the improvement of knowledge of all mankind. We hope to achieve this through two main categorizations or approaches. These viz:

Wikimedia Clubs

This will consist of forming clubs on the campuses and employing the services of student leader(s) which we will term "Wikipedia Ambassador(s)" and a lecturer who will be a patron of the club. The(se) student(s) will be trained and equipped with all they need to know. They will recruit members to the club and ensure regular engagement through competitions, regular edit-a-thons, photo expeditions, etc.

The patron will also be trained to understand the work of the club and will help start serious edit-a-thon programs on campus and assignments to edit Wikipedia through the course he/she teaches.

Mentoring Approach

This will involve training of lecturers/teachers to employ Wikipedia in their classrooms. It will involve helping the teacher understand the various tools to monitor student activities on the WIkis and helping them build content. This will include writing competitions for students, adding words to Wikitionary, experiments like Wiki Dojo, etc. The focus group here are high schools and middle school.

Measuring Success[edit]

  • Form a partnership with a senior high school that will culminate into the formation of a Wikipedia Club on the campus
