Wikimedia & Education Greenhouse - Team Application Form
[edit]This is a welcomed development. If this niche could be exploited, better things will happen.
Before starting your application, make sure all members of your team have read and understood the team application guidelines.
This initiative is great. I believe it will increase global visibility and promote language and culture.
The idea is great. The need to promote our different indigenous language in our various communities cannot be overemphasized. I believe this project will go a long way in achieving that.
Project idea
[edit]What idea do you want to bring to the W&E Greenhouse?
[edit]Describe the context, theme, goals, strategies, duration of your proposed initiative. Be as detailed as possible.
Context
[edit]3,000 languages are endangered, but people are fighting back. Around the world, sidelined communities are reviving endangered languages and reclaiming their cultural sovereignty — but language revival resources are limited. The United Nations 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages (IYIL2019) is an unprecedented opportunity to engage language champions on a global scale and foster new initiatives for linguistic preservation and revival. With nearly 500 native languages, 71 of which are endangered or dormant, and nearly 94,000,000 people online, the Federal Republic of Nigeria is home to tremendous opportunity for fostering grassroots language initiatives. The Greenhouse in Nigeria is poised to be executed between the Wikimedia community in Nigeria and the language department of three major tertiary institutions in Nigeria. At the moment, Wikimedia User Group Nigeria ( WUGN) through its Wiki Club project is in partnership with 6 universities in the country namely: Lagos State University, University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, and Ekiti State University, all the universities cut across different languages and tribes . The project will attempt to bring a working relationship between Wiki Fan Club and language Scholars in each designated university. Wiki Fan Club is a registered association of undergraduate and postgraduate students in Nigeria university where wikimedians are using as a hub for their activities.
Objective
[edit]The project aims at using Wikipedia and its sister project as a platform for improving indigenous language.
Goals
[edit]- To recruit more volunteers editor
- To improve existing indigenous content on Wikipedia
- To create new contents in indigenous languages on Wikipedia.
- To build a sustainable model that can be replicated in all the universities in Nigeria.
- To create a platform for introducing Wikipedia and its sister project to the Nigerian community.
Strategy
[edit]The project adopts a simple Lecturer-students Model:
- The students are selected Lecturer from Linguistic department of any of the designated university.
- The Lecturers are experienced Wikimedians from our Wiki Fan Club domiciling in any of the institution.
Duration
[edit]65days
Who would you engage in your initiative?
[edit]Describe the kind of relationships you have or plan to establish with potential partners in your community, both in your local Wikimedia community and education community.

3 | Bayero University, Kano | Hausa | Hausa Wikipedia | Ammar Abdulhamid. Ammarpad |
4 | Project Coordinator | Ashioma Medi SuperSwift |
The project will attempt a closed classroom setting comprising
- 8 lecturers from linguistics department per designated university to serve as students
- 2 experienced Wikipedians from Wikimedia Community in each university to serve as Class facilitator/Coordinator
In terms of financial resources, how much money would you need to achieve your goals?
[edit]Indicate your local currency and describe how you would divide your budget for this project.

- If at least 3-day Wikipedia and its sister projects training were organised per University
- If at least 8 linguistics lectures participated in a classroom setting
- If two weeks monitoring session were executed after the training per university
- if at least fresh 25 indigenous languages focus articles are created per university by the participants
- If at least 25 articles were translated from English Wikipedia to any of the 3 focused languages Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa.
