Wikimedia Indonesia trained the trainers through WikiPelatih 2019

Author: Amy (Wikimedia Indonesia)

Summary: Wikimedia Indonesia for the second time held training for trainers in Jakarta, Indonesia. The event was attended by 30 volunteers who were also Wiki trainers from different regions in Indonesia.

WikiPelatih is Wikimedia Indonesia’s training-for-trainers program. The purpose of the program is to train Wiki project voluntary trainers so that they can at least possess the same capacity and capability in conducting Wiki trainings. WikiPelatih was first organized in Jakarta in August 2018. It involved 20 voluntary trainers from Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Padang. There was also an Evaluation Meeting of WikiPelatih 2018 that was held in Bandung, West Java, last June 2019. In this evaluation meeting, the same participants were invited to evaluate everything related to WikiLatih and WikiPelatih 2018.

We did realize that we needed to assess the voluntary trainers’ needs in the next WikiPelatih, thus we asked them to give ideas and opinions of what can be improved from the last WikiPelatih (WikiPelatih 2018) and how to improve it for the next WikiPelatih (WikiPelatih 2019) based on their expectations of this program. Thanks to these volunteers, from this evaluation meeting, we obtained many suggestions from them that were very useful to design the next WikiPelatih, which we hoped would be able to accommodate the voluntary trainers’ needs better than before.

WikiPelatih 2019 was held in Jakarta, August 24-25, 2019. This year’s WikiPelatih had more diverse participants. There were 30 voluntary trainers who were invited to the event, and they came from different cities in Indonesia: Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, Bandung, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Malang, Denpasar, Balikpapan, Medan, Pekanbaru, and Padang. These participants represented various Wikipedia language projects that were supported by Wikimedia Indonesia: Indonesian Wikipedia, Javanese Wikipedia, Balinese Wikipedia (that is still in Incubator), Minangkabau Wikipedia, Sundanese Wikipedia, and Banjar Wikipedia.

Sessions[edit]

WikiPelatih 2019 was a 2-days event. The first day was divided into 1 main session, and 4 small sessions. The first big session was Critical Thinking in Wikipedia Context, and was delivered by one of our volunteers, Ramzy Muliawan. He talked about the importance of thinking critically and ask questions when it comes to both reading and writing Wikipedia articles. After this session, the participants were divided into two small groups and they had to attend two different classes (Class A and Class B) that offered two different lessons. This was also one of the concepts suggested by some volunteers during the Evaluation Meeting of WikiPelatih 2018. Class A had Policies and Guidelines on Wikipedia and Public Speaking and Presentation Techniques lessons, while class B had Creative Commons License, and Troubleshooting lessons. On the second day, there was only one session attended by all the participants. It was Writing Techniques and Language Used on Wikipedia, and was delivered by Ivan Lanin, an educator of standard Indonesian language. He talked about the importance of understanding and using the standard Indonesian language. After that, the event was closed with a group task for the participants. They were divided into five small groups and they had to discuss several cases that they would probably encounter during Wiki trainings. The cases given to them already included all the materials given during all sessions. Therefore, through this group task, the participants had the opportunity to practice what they have learned throughout the event. They had to solve the cases and provide solutions of these cases by presenting their answers in front of the other participants and some panelists. In the end, the corrections and responses toward the participants’ answers were given by the panelists.
