Education in the Bolivia

The following page describes and provides information about the general education system in the Bolivia.

Academic Year

The school year begins in February and ends in November.

Core Academic Areas

Language of instruction

  • Spanish (all the indigenous languages are official languages)
  • Depending on the context of the school, the first language of instruction will either be Spanish or an indigenous language (in cases where more languages are spoken by different students, a communitarian committee will decide upon the language[s] of instruction).


Types of Schools

Two types of schools in Bolivia are public schools and private schools.

School Years by age

The school grade levels are divided by the following:

  • Pre-primary 4-5,
  • Primary 6-11,
  • Secondary 12-17,
  • Tertiary 18-22;
  • Compulsory education lasts 14 years from age 4 to age 17


Overall Literacy Level

Male: 96.52; Female: 88.58 (UIS, 2015)

Gender Distribution

Gross enrolment rate in secondary: Male 91.38%, Female 89.38% (UIS, 2017)

Inequalities

the education reform is built around the following four pillars, as identified by the Bolivian MoE: (1)

  2. intra- and inter-culturalism along with plurilingualism, (3)
  3. productivity and (4)
  4. communitarian education.
