Current requests[edit]

Richard Nevell[edit]

Hello,

I am one of Wikimedia UK's Project Coordinators. As part of my work I support UK university courses which incorporate Wikipedia as part of their teaching and assessment. This involves advising course leaders on Wikipedia matters, connecting them with our volunteer community, and bringing course leaders together to share good practice and ideas. I am also WMUK's point of contact for our Wikipedian in Residence at the University of Edinburgh and provide direct support to the resident. I am an admin on the outreach dashboard so I can help with administrative tasks. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 14:34, 23 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Richard! Thank you for your membership request to join the Education Collaborative! As you may know, the Collab is currently discussing membership criteria. We hope to have some updated procedures in place by January 2017. We apologize for leaving your request in limbo for such an extended period of time.

In the meantime, we want to encourage you to be part of the conversations. The Collab mailing list is a public list that you are welcome to join. You can participate in conversations there, ask questions, or simply listen to see what’s happening in the group. You are also welcome at any virtual meetings (approximately once a month). Similarly, feel free to be part of the conversation about the future of Collab membership since it directly impacts your request. You can give feedback publicly on the list, on wiki (link coming soon), or privately to me via email (vmasrour Template:A wikimedia dot org). Joalpe[edit]

Cheers from Brazil! Let me start this request by congratulating the Wikipedia Education Collaborative community for the achievements that were listed on the "Milestone Infographic" and for definitely having made one of the coolest meeting visual record I have ever seen (the "Stockholm Banner"). I strongly identify with the idea that success is reached when we talk with a unified voice and take seriously diversity. I am a professor at the Project Wikipedia in the University and a primary contact for the Wikipedia Education Program in Brazil. I am a member of the User Group Wikimedia in Brazil.
I have used Wikipedia and its sister project in the context of education and scientific-dissemination activities for three years. I have been a professor in a school of journalism since 2014 and have relied on Wikipedia assignments since then (report in Portuguese here). My teaching activity has attracted media interest in Brazil (for instance, I was featured in one of the largest media venues in the country, with a report titled "Wikipedia has the potential to change school assignments"), including a note on the Wikimedia Education Newsletter. Relatively distinctive features of my teaching activity are at least twofold. Firstly, I have generally dealt with larger class sizes than what is common in educational uses of Wikipedia, according to a case review I did in 2014 (short version of the review table here). Secondly, my focus has mostly been on topics pertaining to social justice and politics in Brazil.
More recently, I have led an initiative of scientific dissemination, especially related to improving content in and fostering a community of editors around mathematics and neuroscience in Wikipedia in Portuguese. Local media has called this initiative "Brazil's very own Wikipedia Year of Science" (report in Portuguese here), and a note on this work is expected to appear soon on the Wiki Education Foundation blog. In the context of this initiative, we added around 500,000 bytes of content in the last four months, including high quality multimedia content (for example, the movie on this entry on spike sorting, that was considered Media of the Day). A major local public funding agency has awarded us a grant for the first ever Brazilian Wikipedian-in-residence (featured on the WMF blog here to contribute to this initiative. I have also created and contributed to a collaborative blog on the use of Wikipedia in scientific dissemination, [difusaoneuromat.wordpress.com here]. Both education and scientific-dissemination activities are ongoing.
Educational and scientific-dissemination activities have sparked my interest in doing research and on writing in news op-eds on Wikipedia. I have published two academic pieces and have been successful in getting three research grants related to these activities (report in Portuguese here). In 2015, I gave a talk on Wikipedia and Education at the Brazilian edition of the technology festival Campus Party. I have published five media op-eds on Wikipedia and education (report in Portuguese here), including the piece "In Defense of Wiki-education," in 2015.
I took part of two edit-a-thons and have been conducting a GLAM project right now (report in Portuguese here). In March 2016, I was involved in an edit-a-thon on "Women and Media," in which feminist journalists edited on gender issues. In a partnership with a Museum of Veterinary Anatomy, I have been part of a project to upload hundreds of high-quality images on animal anatomy.
I have translated entirely the Wiki Ed Dashboard into Brazilian Portuguese (report in Portuguese here). I have made some progress in the version in Portuguese from Portugal, but it has been harder than I thought it would be.
I hope this long message has provided a good sense of how enthusiastic and involved I have been with the idea that Wikipedia belongs to education. I am eager to be part of the Wikipedia Education Collaborative community!

Gabriela Boková[edit]

Hey, I´m education manager in Wikimedia Czech Republic and I love my job :D In February 2016, I started to coordinate programs Students write Wikipedia and Seniors write Wikipedia. I´m working on a development of these programs and in the same time, I´m taking care about education for our lectures and volunteers. Now I´m focused on a global project WikiTeachIn created by Education Collaborative Group and I transform it for Czech conditions. I would like to develop the cooperation on the global level, do the things together, share the best practices and know-how and get an inspiration.

Thank you for your membership request to join the Education Collaborative! As you may know, the Collab is currently discussing membership criteria. We hope to have some updated procedures in place by January 2017. We apologize for leaving your request in limbo for such an extended period of time.

Sailesh Patnaik[edit]

Hello! My name is Sailesh Patnaik. I am an active Odia Wikimedian and contributing to Wikimedia projects from 2012. I have been very active in outreach programs and has conducted workshops , presentations, and edit-a-thons to spread awareness about Wikipedia(Please find here). As a community member, I was a keen observer of WEPs for Odia Wikipedia at KISS and IIMC and has also participated in it. I have also done Education programs in Utkal University,CET and KIST college.

I have maintained good relationship with Indic community and has also led the organizing team of national events like WikiLovesFood and Wiki Conference India, Being a collab member my priority will be to spread awareness on WEP among the Indic community and I would be happy to help communities on wiki or off wiki ,and record their activities. I find that Netha is already working on WEP awareness for India, together we can work to bring this program to various communities by engaging their enthusiastic Wikimedians and community leaders.

I have been associated with Wikipedia Education Program as the distribution leader of the newsletter team from September 2015 and has successfully delivered its 2 quarterly newsletters. --Saileshpat (talk) 00:11, 21 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vahid, Hope you're doing well!!

It's been one year, and I haven't heard about this membership. Some of the information given above are now outdated, and I have come across more collaborations in this one year. In August, I am going to revive the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences education program for the Odia Wikipedia. Waiting for your reply... --Saileshpat (talk) 14:09, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
