In 2011, Sarah Stierch served as Wikipedian in Residence at the Smithsonian Institution's Archives of American Art. A case study was developed for this residency after it's completion. This update serves as a four year "update" on the data related to page views, image content, and additional outcomes of this project.

Four years later[edit]

It seems like just yesterday when this residency took place. The first residency at the Smithsonian Institution, this program paved the way for additional residencies at the Smithsonian, and is the cornerstone for many additional residencies, due to the wide circulation of this case study. Four years later, this residency has produced the following outcomes:

  • A second Wikipedian in Residence at the Smithsonian Institution Archives which was facilitated again, by Stierch. This residency launched the first women in science edit-a-thon, which has been replicated internationally. It also brought numerous images and article improvements to Wikimedia projects. • Smithsonian Wikipedian in Residence which was held by Dominic McDevitt-Parks as an all encompassing program to develop a culture of free knowledge and sharing at the Smithsonian. Learn more here.
  • Institutional relationship with Wikimedia DC, the local Wikimedia chapter. This relationship blossomed as an outcome of this first residency, and has continued to grow into regularly occurring events and Smithsonian staff serving as advisors to the chapter.
  • Ongoing Wikimedia events held by Smithsonian staff at units throughout Washington, D.C. open for the public have been held and continue to be take place.
  • Wider industry awareness of Wikimedia projects that involve partnerships with the GLAM community. This residency has been presented about at international conferences and continues to be used as a source for those interested in residencies and content donations around the world.
