When we want to know what historical figures looked like before the invention of photography, we usually rely on paintings and engravings. However, these works are not always contemporary, and even when they are, they are often idealized representations. Historians compare visual information with historical documentation and formulate hypotheses about the appearance of historical figures. Illustrators can try to reconstruct the appearance of historical figures on the basis of these hypotheses.
