Project goal

[edit]

The Wikipedia course for Igbo language lecturers and students in Alvan Ikoku College of education project will teach them how to use Wikimedia projects as a teaching tool to empower their students to add open educational resources in the Igbo language, as well as add content about Igbos and their culture.

This project will improve the quality of education in the Linguistic department, empower the students and lecturers to be digitally literate and also make knowledge available in the Igbo language for people that are not fortunate to acquire formal education to access knowledge relevant to them.

Project Plan/Strategy

Working with the Wikimedia community on my education project

Designing a strategy to engage the Wikimedia community in our education project

The Wikipedia course for Igbo language lecturers in Alvan Ikoku College of Education is a project that will aim at teaching the linguists the following:

  • how they can harness it to benefit their students in terms of writing articles, doing research and adding educational content in the Igbo Wikipedia, about their culture and study.

The Wikimedia community to engage with:

I will engage with the Igbo Wikimedians User Group to execute this project

My purpose in engaging with the community:

*To collaborate with them and help facilitate the project.

*To mentor new members of the community.

*To Add their opinion and contributions about the project for a better outcome.

What to do before the education project starts:

*Finalise the event space, dates and time for the pieces of training with the school personnel in charge.

*Create my project page on meta and project dashboard.

*Contact people from the community who have shown interest to facilitate the project.

*Create online flyers for the project and post them in social media platforms.

*Send a program schedule checklist to the school and run it with the personnel in charge to ensure that everything needed for the training is sorted out.

*Prepare survey forms for participants feedback during the event.

What to do while my education project is developing:

*Show participants how to communicate with other Wikipedians online and how to ask for help.

*Collect data and Take surveys for every session.

What to do after the education project is completed:

*Thank the participants through an email or chat group created.

*Analyse and Evaluate the success of the project.

*Write my report to capture the targeted and achieved outcomes and include any additional relevant information about the project.

*Share the result of the project with the Igbo community and blog about it on Wikimedia space and other outreach engagement platforms.

*Follow up on participants and update and motivate them with information about projects and opportunities in the movement.

The surprising thing is this process helped me understand the assumptions made that need to be sorted out, as well as highlighting possible ways to resolve those assumptions.

What was the most challenging thing about this process?

My brainstorming on the effects of the problems was a bit difficult.

Problem statement/Advocacy message

[edit]

Statement

[edit]

Igbo language and culture is our identity; Our history, culture and language should not disappear. It should be documented and freely accessed by anyone. Also, the less privileged in the remote areas of Igboland should know about the world and be literate through access to all forms of knowledge in Igbo, the language they understand.

Evidence

[edit]

The Igbo Wikipedia has approximately 1500 articles, and most of them are biographies, which does not sum up the world knowledge, neither does it reflect our history and culture. Also, it is predicted by UNESCO that the Igbo language will go into extinction in the year 2050 if we don't embrace our language and culture.

Example

[edit]

The Igbo Wikimedians User Group, an affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation is making efforts to promote Igbo language and culture through projects targeted at adding content in Wikimedia platforms to provide Online Educational Resources in the Igbo language.

Action Desired

[edit]

So as educationists and students in Igbo language discipline. We must learn how we can harness Online Educational Resources (OERs) as well as contribute to OERs using the Igbo Wikipedia as our platform.
