Some comments[edit]

  • All holdings should be freely accessible to the public, except where issues of privacy, confidentiality, or other ethical or legal concerns prevent that.
  • I would add "security", since archive holdings are still classified
  • If digital copies exist, they should be made available to the public free of charge, in their highest-quality version, and using open file formats.
  • Logistic might be tricky. They should be available either on the web or by some special arrangements of some sort
  • Institutions should allow free downstream use of reproductions of their holdings.
  • This includes commercial and any other purposes.
  • those 2 should be combined
  • Institutions should not claim their own copyright on mechanical reproductions of works. Works in the public domain should never be allowed to reenter copyright.
  • this should clarify the position on 2D and 3D works. We should encourage releases of 3D works as PD, but require it for 2D.
  • Institutions should not hold a copyright on their collections except under a free license like CC-BY (but not CC-BY-NC).
