Minutes of the meeting:

  • Sailesh: Let's start with self introduction. I would like Liang to start with :P
  • Liang: I am one of the board members of Wikimedia Taiwan. I am involved in the Wikimedia movement from 7-8 years, involved in Education non-profit and strategy movement.
  • Lilit : I started as a co-founder of the Wikimedia Armenia, then became a Board member and now leading the Education project. It’s been three years that I became the staff member
  • Sylvia: I'm involved in Wikimedia movement from last 5 years, and I am from Lebanon. In the meanwhile I graduated from piano and painting , and I am currently majoring in Nursing medical university. Wikipedia is a great opportunity, we created the WikiClub in Lebanon, through which we educate new students to learn about the Wikimedia project and join us.
  • Chia: From Wikimedia Taiwan, I'm in charge of Education Program this year.
  • Reke: I'm sec. General of Wikimedia Taiwan,
  • Amy: I'm a staff member of Wikimedia Indonesia, discussing their projects and ideas. I am in charge of one of the projects of Education in Indonesia, Wikipedia goes to school. We are about to start it next year, this year is for the preparation stage
  • John: I work as Wikipedian in Residence in UNESCO, I work as documentation
  • Sailesh: I have been a Wikipedian for the last seven years. This July joined as an intern of the Wikimedia Foundation. Now I am the Education outreach contractor as in the Education team. Volunteer and working group process. If you want to know anything about education, please teach our to me.
  • Sailesh: want to know more about your work, please share about the wiki camp, Lilit?
  • Lilit: General summary of the camp idea. How we began organizing the camp and what is the general idea behind it.... in 2013, we began working with secondary school students. after seeing so many enthusiastic active students, we organized a camp as an appreciation of their contributions. Camp is a place for students to deepen their knowledge, make friends with other school students and so.. In 2014, we organized the first wiki camp, there were 70-80 participants, and then it was recognized as the coolest Wikimedia project of the year. During the next year, we noticed that not all the students can write Wikipedia articles, i.e. write in encyclopedic style, so we started working on the Wiktionary and Wikisource. A couple of years later, in 2017, we also began organizing camp for university students. In 2018 we organized a camp for university students within "I create a vital article" campaign. You may have heard that there are 1000 articles that each Wikipedia should have, so we have been working on this list and by now have completed 175 articles with the help of students, professors and teachers. We also organize camps for Armenian Diaspora students; living in Lebanon, Portugal, and France. One of the participants of those camps is Sylvia that she will share with us her experience. So this is the brief summary.
  • Sailesh: I have some questions? I think some projects involving students introduce Wikisource is rare. Do you face any challenges for that?
  • Lilit: We have Wikiclubs in different regions and villages of Armenia, in these clubs we teach Wiktionary and Wikisource to secondary school students. It’s easier for them to write contents in those projects. And a few years later, when they feel they are ready, they began editing on Wikipedia. We provide the clubs with books that we digitize. Those chose those free licenced books that included in their school curriculum. We have also digitized a great number of Armenian dictionaries for clubs as a source. Until now we have created around 130000 Armenian words in Wiktionary, that totally results of two to three years.
  • Sailesh: in India, students on how to write...
  • Sylvia: We started the camp in Lebanon, we have a club in Lebanon, which helps students on how to edit. It is very fun being in the camp, in the meantime you spend time editing Wikimedia as well as in spending good time with your friends. We study a lot in the camp and acquire more knowledge and meet new people, and be more and more encouraged in editing in the Wikipedia. it was best thing.
  • Lilit: ... In terms of writing Wikipedia, and other sister projects. We are ... next year, so this is for preparation stage, and the next year is the execution project.
  • Sailesh: Next person, please, John Cummings?
  • John: Hi, I am now in France. Working as a Wikipedian in UNESCO, also I also help other UN agencies share their content and knowledge on Wikipedia.
  • Sailesh: Awesome, I have something to discuss with you, I will add in the agenda... So we had some discussion with the team of Armenia, Lilit and Sylvia explains about their project. If you are interested you can ask them to summarize in one or two sentences.
  • Liang: I think if anyone is interested in their sharing then they can check the documentation on the etherpad.
  • Sailesh: Ok. Then we should
  • Liang: Just a quick question for Amy. You said that will be your preparation year of the education program in Indonesia. Could you elaborate more?
  • Amy: This year the preparation stage consists of a Japanese community, there will be three Universities, we're trying to get everything ready. For teachers, they have to develop the curriculum and Wikimedia Id needs to develop resources
  • Liang: We have translated some brochures from Wikimedia Foundation. And I remember you have your own original textbook for how to edit Wikipedia, are you going to use that text book in the education program?
  • Amy: I think we will update the text book because it is an old one that created since 2013. That update will also be in our next year education program.

(it seems like there was a weird technical issue from Google and everyone muted for a like a half minute)

  • Chia: Reke and I started some interviews with students. We want to know when Wikipedians go to class, how that impact to students? I went three interviews with the students so far. Everyone provide different opinions. and I am following a research that I learned in Berlin. The research told us editors got different models, and I would like to apply that kind of "persona" in my research. So maybe we can help the students to keep editing. Another project is about the wiki textbook. We work with another NGO that work with immigrants from Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, and other countries. We want to invite them to edit wiki textbooks. I learned a lot of Wikimedia knowledge from Liang and other Wikipedians in the Oslo Freedom Forum.
  • Sailesh: So you told us about the text book last time right?
  • Chia-yi: Yes.
  • Amy: Sorry I am back now, I remember there was some questions?
  • Sailesh: Yes, you were talking about you have Japanese Wikipedia, but isn't it foreign language to you?
  • Amy: No, we will use Javanese Wikipedia.
  • Sailesh: Ah, sorry that I misunderstood.
  • Amy: That is Ok, frankly people are not used to write Javanese, so it is kind of alien to most of the locals, too. Also we are lacking of volunteers, so we are recruiting some interms like one or two helps.
  • Sailesh: Great, I think about some of other Wikipedians that involves in education program in India. So I will link to you by emails.
  • Amy: Ok, thank you.
  • Sailesh: Any more updates? Then I will introduce the things from Wikimedia Education team. So last year we did a survey to the Wikipedia Education Program stakeholders, and we got some feedback. Most of the stakeholders think the previous logo is a black square that is not that friendly. So we ask the design team from the WMF to redesign the logo.   • Liang: I have a question, it seems like that the logos also contains white ones, how can we use it?
  • Sailesh: I am not sure what the white ones are for, I will ask around.
  • Liang: And what about the user manual for these logos?
  • Sailesh: That will be shared in the next newsletter... And we would like anyone can share the experience the stories in the newsletter... Ah and I would like to discuss with John about his UNESCO collaboration, but it seems like he is left. So let me go to the next thing is about the slack, it will be introduced in the next newsletter and also include the invitation letter to the slack through your mail.
  • Liang: Sailesh, why you mentioned about the indigenous language of UNESCO?
  • Sailesh: Yes, because as far as I know I think next year will be the indigenous language year for UNESCO.
  • Liang: Reke has a followup question, when can we see the new design, any timeline?
  • Sailesh: Since there are totally 1200 pages on outreach, I think we need to deal with a lot of work load. Maybe say 3rd week in December will finish the new portal and you can see the new design.
  • Liang: I see thank you. Another question... Is there any updates from the Basque community for their Wikimedia + Education Conference?
  • Amy: Last time I checked there is no update.

  • Liang: Maybe another update about a coming education opportunity. A professor wants to digitise a museum in Jakarta, I spoke to Biyanto about this. Hopefully there will be new updates on next Wednesday or Thursday.
