Collaboration with the New Vision Organization in Tirana
In 2021, Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group (WoALUG) collaborated for the very first time with the New Vision Organization based in Tirana, Albania. This non-profit organization works with young people. Its mission is to develop volunteering work at different social aspects and to raise awareness regarding the community.
On July 2, 2021, the New Vision Organization invited us to participate in the outdoor training with the topic of Leadership. Therefore, we presented a session about how youth can develop leadership skills through Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects.
The group consisted of 17 participants and everyone enjoyed the session by asking questions about Wikipedia; why we should contribute to the Wikipedia community; how to accept and receive knowledge in order to develop their leadership skills, to be persuasive in their arguments, to learn how to communicate and to be aware to get things better and much more. In the end, participants had the opportunity to wrap up the information it was presented and everyone offered to participate in the coming campaigns that Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group is developing.
Summer of Wikivoyage Campaign 2021
At the beginning of July Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group (WoALUG) opened the campaign of Summer of Wikivoyage 2021 online which was finalized with the edi-a-thon by the end of the month. We kept our audience updated and reminded them of the Wikivoyage Campaign once a week through social media in order to participate in it.
Summer of Wikivoyage 2021 was a very successful edit-a-thon that was developed in the north-eastern Albania, in Rubik, on July 30 - August 1. We had the pleasure to invite a group of new and experienced Wikimedians. The new Wikimedians are part of the New Vision Organization and serve as regular volunteers in the community.
During this edit-a-thon, we focused on writing, improving and adding new information to the existing articles especially from the Mirdita region located in the north-eastern Albania. On the first day of the event we came up with some introduction and refreshment about the Wikivoyage platform and decided what topics and regions we planned to write about. On the second day, we went hiking and explored the town regarding its landmarks, restaurants, bars and the surroundings with the intention to include the information online.
Nevertheless, we did not limit ourselves only to the northern part of Albania, some of us even wrote about districts and areas all over Albania and Kosovo, as well. At the end of each day we posted on social media what we developed and created by sharing articles online to keep our community informed.
The whole group created 13 articles and edited 52 pages for three days in a row.

Representation and erasure: opportunities and risks that Wikipedia presents for First Nations knowledges
It has long been acknowledged Wikipedia has a diversity problem, among its editors and the content they write. GLAM organisations are increasingly looking to support initiatives to remedy this imbalance and bias. These efforts often reveal significant tensions between Wikipedia's principles and other knowledge systems, like those of First Nations people around the world.
On 10 July 2021, City of Sydney held a First Nations edit-a-thon focused on improving articles of importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities on Wikipedia, as part of a broader series of City of Sydney edit-a-thons in partnership with Wikimedia Australia. Initially planned for the Redfern Community Centre in 2020, the event was held entirely online due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The First Nations edit-a-thon was led by Kirsten Thorpe, a Worimi Senior Researcher from the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education & Research at the University of Technology Sydney, and Nathan “Mudyi” Sentance, a Wiradjuri activist, librarian and essayist currently working at the Australian Museum, with Wikimedians Toby Hudson and Caddie Brain.
Thorpe and Sentance described the opportunities Wikimedia platforms could hold for truth telling and acknowledging First Nations histories, but also unpacked the many complexities of ensuring traditional knowledges are controlled by communities and cultural protocols are respected.
"Wikipedia is just one of these sources that people just use," Sentance said. "It's detrimental to ignore it."
"There are lots of opportunities to assert First Nations sovereignty, to reconfirm that First Nations people were always here and the incredible work that First Nations people are doing - acts of resistance, survival and resistance in the face of ongoing colonisation."
"If information doesn't exist, that where true trauma lies." Thorpe agrees.
Around 25 participants worked to improve First Nations histories with a focus on articles about places, cities and town, some of which previously had no acknowledgment of any First Nations history, as well as creating new articles on First Nations organisations and leaders:

Kirsten Thorpe and Nathan “Mudyi” Sentance will be presenting at Wikimania 2021 on Monday 16 August (0700 UTC; 1700 AEST), offering a conversation about the opportunities and risks that Wikipedia presents for First Nations people.
A wikicontest to celebrate and make visible the state of Bahia
Wikiconcontest Wiki Loves Bahia
During 2021, Wiki Movimento Brasil is leading Wiki Loves Bahia - an initiative to celebrate and make visible the local culture and knowledge of one of the largest and most impoverished states in Brazil. Aside from reaching out directly to cultural and education institutions in Bahia, we are working on dissemination activities to improve the coverage on Wikipedia in Portuguese around the state's biomes, diversity, historical and cultural heritage, religiosity and territories.
On July 10th, we launched the Wikiconcurso Wiki Loves Bahia - a contest in which the editors that contribute the most are awarded with prizes. To better explain the context of the initiative and provide training for new users, we also organized an opening event. The contest will run until the end of August and, so far, more than 120 volunteers have edited more than 600 entries already, including the creation of 150 articles.
During Wiki Loves Bahia, we'll host several edit-a-thons remotely - always with a specialist on the main subject to bring more context to the activity. The first one happened right after the opening event and it was dedicated to Bahia's Independence, a historical date to celebrate and remember the emancipatory movement started by the population in 1822 against the Portuguese colonial domain.
With more than 560 km² and 410 municipalities, Bahia is bigger than Spain alone, so the next edit-a-thon will be focused on the cities of Bahia and their demographic and geographic diversity. These editing marathons are also opportunities for the participants to accumulate points for the wikicontest. Many more to come!
New partnership with the Public Archives of the State of São Paulo (APESP)
Wiki Movimento Brasil signed up a new GLAM-Wiki partnership with the Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo (APESP). The institution holds a collection of approximately 25 million textual documents and 2,7 million photographs. Among their collection, there are five documental sets considered World Heritage by UNESCO.

The West Bengal Wikimedians User Group organized a 3-months long proofreading contest on Bengali Wikisource from 9 May 2021 to 8 August 2021 remembering the occasion of the birth and death anniversary of Nobel laureate author Rabindranath Tagore. This was the third iteration of the event which had been organized for the last two consecutive years by the user group. This year, 52 books written by Tagore were selected for the participants to proofread including 4 books donated by the Two Centuries of Indian Print (2CIP) project of British Library for this competition. More than 6000 pages were proofread at the end of the competition by 22 participants. Currently, the necessary information from the top 5 contributors are being collected so that the user group can send them the prizes as soon as possible.
New Zealand holds its second Wikimedia conference, and a performing arts Wikiproject gathers steam
Auckland WikiCon
Aotearoa's second-ever Wikimedia conference, Auckland WikiCon, was held at Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 July. It followed the successful inaugural WikiCon in Hokitika in March; the final conference for the year will be in Wellington in November. With over 20 attending, this small event was still New Zealand's largest Wikimedia meeting to date, and in the time of COVID-19 one of the rare face-to-face meetups in the world with no social distancing or mask-wearing required.
The meeting was hosted by Auckland Museum, with an introductory talk by the Director of Collections and Research David Reeves, who made it clear that engaging with open knowledge, linked data, and the Wikimedia movement in particular was important to the institution. Auckland Museum's James Taylor gave two talks, on the Museum's Wikimedia strategy to date,and their upcoming project grant to work with the new New Zealand History school curriculum (slides here). Ambrosia10 complemented these with a whirlwind tour of ways editors could contribute to Wikimedia projects using the images and data of Auckland Museum – useful for beginners and experienced editors alike (slides and text here). Another presentation, by Andrew Wooding, was an introduction to Wikisource (summarised here), a project which until now has not been on the radar of most New Zealand editors.- Happy editors at Auckland WikiCon

The conference was balanced with a generous allocation of networking, Unconference, and informal help. The number of beginners attending was so large that two sessions ran simultaneously, one just for beginning editors with one-to-one help to get them started with their first edits. As a helper (notes Giantflightlessbirds), one of the most rewarding contributions from this session was seeing a new editor create her first article, in Portuguese (on Matariki, the Māori New Year festival). The newbie editors resolved to run a meetup on August 28th, hopefully the beginning of regular Wikimedia meetups in New Zealand's largest city. This, along with a conference session on making the user group an incorporated society, bodes well for the health of the Wikimedia movement in Aotearoa.

Ōtepoti Dunedin Edit-a-thon

An edit-a-thon took place in Ōtepoti Dunedin on Saturday 10 July at the Hocken Collections Library from 10.30am – 4pm, Wikipedia:Meetup/Dunedin 4. This was the first of three edit-a-thons that are part of the Performing Arts Aotearoa Wikiproject funded by the Wikimedia Foundation.
The coordinator Pakoire and co-host DrThneed were joined in person by seven others, which included six new editors from the performing arts community, and two people working remotely in Wellington and Christchurch.
There were two content focus areas for the workshop:
- To improve content around the legacy of Allen Hall which is the theatre venue of the Otago University theatre department and has been operating for decades
- To celebrate the current performing arts companies in the city by increasing content on people and organisations in Wikipedia
In addition the Theatre Aotearoa Database was put forward as a resource useful for expanding theatre articles.
The red door of Allen Hall is being used as a hook for a Did You Know feature on the Wikipedia homepage which links two new articles created for this event, Allen Hall and Lisa Warrington.
The dashboard for the event recorded the new editors adding 27 references to Wikipedia between them and a total of 2,017 words. Comments from new editors after they had learnt the basics and started editing related to how accessible they found doing it. There was motivation amongst many in the group to continue to meet as a way of progressing the articles they are interested in. With the experienced editors overall including Wikidata the edit-a-thon added 48.1K words, 4 commons uploads, 245 references, across 53 articles including 4 new Wikipedia articles and 15 new Wikidata articles.
Conflict of interest is an area of consideration for editing in performing arts, since most subject experts are also practicing arts and producers. This edit-a-thon / meetup format was useful and people worked on unrelated articles but in tandem with others who knew where to get information.
Both the Otago Theatre Department and the Hocken Collections Library were keen to host this event but the timing meant the Hocken was a better option. It was a very suitable venue and the event was very warmly supported by staff with special thanks to Lynn Benson. The university subject librarian for Art and Humanities Alexander Ritchie has also expressed a desire to support Wikipedia events in the future.
Performing Arts Aotearoa Wikiproject overview

This is a project to increase content and improve the quality of performing arts information from Aotearoa New Zealand on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons and is a four month project from 17 May - 10 September 2021 made possible with a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation. The Wikiproject has goals to ensure good representation of women, Māori and people of colour artists, producers, productions and organisations to address existing bias in Wikipedia.
There are two more scheduled edit-a-thons as part of this project:
- Auckland on Saturday 14 August 10.30am - 4pm at the Auckland Theatre Company studio - 487 Dominion Road, Mt Eden, Auckland 1024. The focus is influential Auckland women in performing arts.
- Wellington on Saturday 21 Augusts 10.30am - 4pm at the Nola Millar Library, Te Whaea: National Dance and Drama Centre - 11 Hutchison Street, Newtown, Wellington. The focus is staff and graduates of Toi Whakaari and the New Zealand School of Dance.
At this midpoint of the four month project there have been 31 new Wikipedia articles created that includes 14 biographies of women, six biographies of people of colour and 12 articles about organisations, productions and awards. Some examples are: Nisha Madhan, Honor McKellar, Tanya Muagututi'a, That Bloody Woman, New Zealand School of Dance and Carla Van Zon who featured in a Wikpedia main page Did You Know on 26 June 2021.
The Wikidata entries have far exceeded the project goals with approximately 750 items created or added to. There is more work to do to create opportunities to upload images to Wikimedia Commons under appropriate licences, as predicted this involves a lot of education with individuals and organisations as well as motivating people to follow through.
New chances for GLAM success
Wikipedian in residence at the Museum of Rudnik and Takovo Region
During the two-month Wikipedian in residence at the Museum of Rudnik and Takovo Region, 31 new articles were written, 93 articles were improved, and as many as 161 articles were illustrated. On Wikimedia Commons 716 files has been posted, including 30 catalogs and books. During the projects, articles were written about biographies of famous people for the history and culture of Serbia, about cultural and historical monuments of the Rudnik and Takovo region, settlements and decorations. With these great results, the realization of the jubilee thirtieth project in the realization of Wikimedia Serbia has been completed.

Days of Egypt on Wikipedia
On the occasion of the Revolution Day in Egypt on July 23, an edit-a-thon was organized on Serbian Wikipedia. The edit-a-thon lasted from July 19 to 25, and 8 participants wrote 17 articles, while one article was improved. With this activity, an initial step was made towards increasing the content on Wikipedia about Egypt, its culture, history, tradition, geography, politics and many important topics.
Thanks to our efforts to nurture the culture of Egypt in our region, we attended the Reception on the occasion of the National Day of Egypt, organized by the Еmbassy of the of Egypt and His Excellency Amr Alguvejli. The Association for Culture, Arts and International Cooperation "Adligat" organized an exhibition of photographs from Egypt on the occasion of the National Day of Egypt. In cooperation with "Adligat", we are preparing activities for the release of thousands of important photographs of museums, natural beauties, artifacts, mummies and numerous other attractions that will be a significant step in the digitalization of Egyptian culture.

Childrens theatre is a topic lacking articles and attention on Wikipedia. In an effort to add some attention a visit was made to the Childrens theatre festival at Hildasholm, Leksand, this summer to take photos of plays, artist, visiting authors and happy kids around the area. Around 80 photos were uploaded to Commons for use in articles where they might fit.

A Thousand Images of Islam, British Library Updates
Khalili Collections
A bulk upload shared 1,090 images related to Islam on Commons. This is a very diverse set including manuscripts, coins, metalwork, textile artworks, maps, glassware and jewellery: all in beautiful high-resolution. Metadata about the objects was put in Wikidata, bringing the total number of Wikidata items created by this project to 1,033.
The images are in commons:Category:Khalili Collection of Islamic Art and commons:Category:Khalili Collection of Hajj and the Arts of Pilgrimage. They have yet to be properly categorised and there is lots of depiction data that could be usefully added to the Wikidata representations of the objects. Help is very welcome from the community! Many of the objects are manuscripts — or illustrations from manuscripts — of Qurans and other important Islamic works. There is great potential here to make links to other manuscript collections using Wikidata.
The new uploads include two super-high-resolution images. File:Khalili Collection Hajj and Arts of Pilgrimage Talismanic shirt.jpg was given Featured Picture status on Commons, on English Wikipedia, and on Persian Wikipedia. File:Khalili Collection Hajj and Arts of Pilgrimage MSS 1288.jpg was given Featured Picture status on Commons. In total, this project has so far supplied two Featured Pictures on English Wikipedia, two on Persian Wikipedia, and four on Wikimedia Commons. A month ago, the Commons gallery Featured pictures/Non-photographic media/Religion had just one image relating to Islam, as opposed to 75 for Christianity and five for Judaism. The two new images have multiplied the representation of Islam in this small but important corner of Wikimedia.
On English Wikipedia, Khalili Imperial Garniture passed Good Article review, becoming the 4th GA from this project.

The Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative (AWHI) and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History (NMAH) held a Wikipedia edit-a-thon on July 27th, Wiki Focus: Black Women in Food History. The event featured a discussion with LaDeva Davis, the first Black woman to host a national cooking show (PBS), who generously donated her time to talk about her experiences and offered a Q&A session. Mia Cariello (User:CarCai) an AWHI summer intern created the Wikipedia article about LaDeva Davis, which didn't exist until July 2021 despite her groundbreaking career. The editing workshop was led by Kelly Doyle (AWHI) and Andrew Lih (AWHI). The editing worklist for the event was developed by NMAH curators. This was the 20th editing workshop hosted by the AWHI. Editing and promotional support was provided by Wikimedia DC.

A conversation about depicts and Structured Data on Commons
Since Structured Data on Commons launched in 2019, the community has been working to effectively use the depicts feature, which has been integrated into the Upload Wizard steps, but there is still a lot of uncertainty and divergent practices.
So far, there are two different pages that describe the use of depicts on Commons: the Commons page for depicts and the Structured Data modeling page for depicts. Both offer good information about the feature, but not enough guidance for how depicts should be modeled, or the various ways this data can be found and used.
To build a shared understanding, we have produced a guide to depicts and will be facilitating a discussion about the depicts feature during the Wikimania session, Structured data on Commons: today and tomorrow. We will share how depicts information is used in new product features like MediaSearch and Image Suggestions and suggest some models that will improve the discoverability and reuse of images.
Organized by community member, Andrew Lih, who is also a Wikimedian at Large at the Metropolitan Museum and at the Smithsonian, the session is part of the Education & GLAM track and will include representatives from the Foundation’s Structured Data and GLAM & Culture teams.
