Talk:Education/voting for new logo
Add topicQuestion
[edit]User:NSaad (WMF) and anyone else from the team reading this, it sounds like a good decision to work on a new design for the Education Team, and it is a great initiative to involve the community. Is it possible to provide more context on how the different designs were developed? How was the process that, taking into consideration the findings of the report, led to the options you are proposing? A key aspect of the report, at least to me, was that the internal teams within the WMF did not know much about the education team; has this particular piece of information (or any other from the report) informed the design of the logo? If yes, how so? I understand that the most important distinctive feature is the color of the circle on top of the logo and of the word education at the bottom of the logo --or am I missing something? Is there anyone who could step forward and present a justification for each color (dark, medium, light)? Is there a particular reason for only working with blue? Is there a rationale for choosing this text format for education? Sorry to make all these questions, but I believe they will help me --perhaps others-- to get more meaningfully engaged with this voting procedure. Thanks. --Joalpe (talk) 22:15, 23 October 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Joalpe, I've asked the Communications team to respond to your questions, as I think they are in the best position to explain their design process. From my end, I went to them asking for support to design a new logo, provided all of our research, and underscored the need for a visual representation as we planned to phase out the black square for multiple pressing reasons. The Comms team had a meeting with me where we discussed the needs, and they offered this logo design as something they would be able to work on, saying that they would do research and provide some color options for us to choose from. That is what we are voting on now.
- In terms of the issue about internal understanding about the education team and our work, we have been using different methods to make our work more visible internally. This includes sharing our work more frequently within internal channels, doing targeted outreach, seeking more internal collaboration, etc. The new branding will help to provide a visual for Wikimedia in Education that is less negatively perceived than the black square, encompasses the entirety of Wikimedia in education (removing the word "program"), and create less confusion with WikiEdu as they have a very similar logo.
