Love your imagemap[edit]

Dear David jan,

I *love* the <imagemap> that you added at Education/Countries/Armenia. I'm wondering if you might be able to teach me how you did that so that we could replicate it on the other education program country pages. It would be good to document this strategy. It could be also a Collab task for you to claim. :) There is no urgent need to do this -- just when you can -- but ideally, soon after the new year would be helpful.

Thank you in advance! :) Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 00:29, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Your map reminds me of this one on English Wikipedia: w:Template:Turkey Labelled Map Are they related somehow? Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 00:29, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Anna jan,
I guess its not so hard to do and its documented on MediaWiki, because <imagemap> is a MediaWiki extension. So to do so, I first found an .svg Armenian map on Commons (or other free map), which was this one. I edited that file by an SVG editor program (InkScape) adding the names of missing settlements, marks, changing colors and style making them similar to the world map you created for the main page of education program. So I got a new version of that map. Then I used an external server to create imagemap coordinates automatically. There are several sites to do that ([1], [2]). You should just take the form (rectangle, circle, polygon etc.) mark on the previously uploaded image file, put the matching link next to the coordinates and finally copy all that staff to the wiki.
I'd be happy to answer questions you might have and I'm not sure if this process needs to be documented.--David Saroyan (talk) 08:02, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dear David jan,
You are an amazing mapmaker! Thank you for explaining your process and for sharing helpful free resources that can be used to replicate it on other countries pages. It's good to know that that it's not so hard to do and that it is already well documented. I think because there are almost 90 countries participating in the education program at this point, it might be overly ambitious to attempt to make maps for each one now. However, at least, we know the way now, thanks to you, if we wish to do so in the future. :) Շնորհակալություն , Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 12:31, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Anna jan, yes, I also think that it'd be nice to have maps for all countries. We'd have a large world map with its more local parts. So if you know anyone, who is trying to make maps and has difficulties, or you want a country map but there's no local coordinator who can do that, just write me somewhere, I'll help or do that.--David Saroyan (talk) 17:15, 10 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
