Great North American Wiknics
BySmithsonian Gender Gap Intern
Kelly Doyle Kim and Mia Cariello (User:CarCai) mentored Allie Pae (User:APae02), who served as a summer intern for the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum (SAWHM). Mia Cariello was previously Kelly's Wikimedia summer intern in 2021.
Allie's internship focused on Wikimedia's gender gap, specifically about increasing the representation of Asian-American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) women from Smithsonian collections on the Wikimedia platforms. Allie contributed 254,000 words, created 33 new article / properties, and added 2,710 references to Wikipedia / Wikidata.
Andrew Lih (User:Fuzheado) and Kelly led a Wikimedia overview training for all SAWHM summer interns in July.
This is now the 4th year Kelly has developed Smithsonian internships specifically focused on Wikimedia and the gender gap. This model has proven to be successful and sustainable and something we hope to document in more detail this year for the rest of the GLAM-Wiki community.
