More photo memories – and the community is helping out

Wikimedia Sverige and the Nordic Museum in Stockholm have been working on the project 100 000 Bildminnen, where a selection of previously unpublished photos from the museum's archives is being published on Wikimedia Commons. The project is now coming to an end.

In March, we made another big addition to Wikimedia Commons, with a couple thousands additional photographs. This in preparation for a seminar which will take place at the museum in April, where Wikimedia Sverige will be participating, sharing our insights and experiences from this fantastic partnership. There will also be an edit-a-thon where both Wikimedians and GLAM partners will get a chance to collaborate and work with the photos, improving their descriptions and categorization, and illustrating Wikipedia articles.

One of the goals of the project was harnessing the collective knowledge of the Wikimedia community to improve the information about the photos, many of which have very little metadata. The museum will be able to use these improvements to get a better understanding of their collections. It's been inspiring seeing users notice the new photos just as they were being uploaded and adding relevant categories.

Yearly student project

As usual this time of the year it's time to report the result of the project Kulturhistoria som gymnasiearbete where upper secondary school students from Enskilda gymnasiet writes Wikipedia articles as part of their final thesis. This year resulted in 27 new and six updated articles, and 52 images uploaded to Commons. The topics covers both fashion, spies, ice hockey, male contraceptives and furniture, and after the move from sandboxes to main namespace the Wikipedia community has continued to improve and work with the articles.
