Wikimedian in Residence in Albania
The Qemal Baholli Public Library in Elbasan, Albania, hosted the Wikimedian in Residence for the first time. In collaboration with the public library, WoALUG placed a Wikimedian in Residence for three months, June -September, who closely worked with staff to write articles about the library and people, as well.
The Wikimedian in Residence created 3 new articles; edited 14 articles; and uploaded 14 photos of rare books found in country. These old books date back to 1526.

Celebrating Wikidata, and over 400 new Wikipedia pages
This past month Wikimedia Australia has run events in three cities and online around Wikidata and improving STEM content on Wikipedia. We also experimented with drop in sessions online which averaged two people per session. A lot of time has been dedicated to the upcoming ESEAP Conference and we look forward to meeting and exchanging stories with everyone there soon.
Wikidata's 10th birthday celebrations
Around the world Wikimedians celebrated the 10th birthday of Wikidata, and in Western Australia the regular Perth meetup held their own event with a Wikidata birthday cake.
Wikipedians in Perth have been meeting since 2007 in what are more often social events, but this month hosted User:MargaretRDonald who gave a talk on adding Australia biota to Wikidata based on her recent fellowship. She then cut a birthday cake, which was enjoyed by everyone, and other Wikipedians from around Australia also joined in via Zoom. Also present was Maia Williams, who worked on her own Wikidata fellowship project with Australian census data.
Margaret's recent work has included disambiguating author names for Australian species and taxa, and she is working towards the goal of there being a Wikipedia page for every Australian species.
To help her accomplish this goal Wikimedia Australia has been contacting museums about releasing their images under an open license and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. This in turn will motivate people, like Margaret, to create Wikipedia articles about the species.
As a recent example, this photo of Giant spider crab Leptomithrax gaimardii was made available by Museums Victoria and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. It was then added to the relevant Wikidata page, and Margaret created a page on English Wikipedia.
The crab was then added to the English Wikipedia category Taxa named by Henri Milne-Edwards. Once every taxa has its own Wikipedia page, categories like these will be even more useful as some authors named thousands and thousands of taxa in their careers.
427 articles and counting
Annie Reynolds has been contributing to English Wikipedia for many years, and has actively supported every editathon event I've attended. She helps set up dashboards, offers guidance to new editors, and is full of useful tips she's picked up along the way.
At a recent editathon in Sydney, focusing on Women in STEM, SBS News interviewed Annie about her contributions.
In their article it was revealed she has spent over 1000 hours writing about women for Wikipedia, and has already contributed 427 new articles.
When the article was published, Annie was flooded with praise across Twitter from people inspired by her work, and the work of others around the world like Jess Wade.
Seeing the work of Annie Reynolds and the many other contributors actively adding to Wikipedia is helping people understand how anyone can contribute to Wikipedia and other Wiki projects.
Annie has spent five years adding biographical articles about women to English Wikipedia and is a member of the Women's Write Wiki group who meet regularly at Sydney's Women's Library.
In the SBS article, Annie describes her work as a "minor achievement" compared to people like Jess Wade (who has added some 1,700 Wikipedia articles), but Annie's experience allows her to act as a mentor for those starting out today, and she will continue to inspire us as she sets her sights on article number 428.

WLM Brazil, HR & Environment Wikicontest, and GLAM with Atlantic Forest National Institut
Wiki Loves Monuments Brasil 2022
Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) is an annual photo competition, organized by members of the Wikimedia community around the world. The contest aims to give visibility to the built heritage of participating countries, encouraging people to photograph them and publish these images under a free license, so that they can be used not only on Wikipedia, but anywhere and by any person.
Along September 2022, the wikicontest recieved 11,760 photos of Brazilian monuments taken by 109 photographers, half of them registered in Wikipedia after this competition started. Participants photographed the various monuments and historic sites in their region, then uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons.
On November 1st, Wiki Movimento Brasil presented the 10 best photos that won the national competition and will be sent to the international jury. These photographs will be judged and may win prizes defined by the international organizers.
Human Rights & Environment Wikicontest

The Human Rights and Environment Wikicontest is a Portuguese Wikipedia editing competition conceived and carried out by Wiki Movimento Brasil, Wikimedia Portugal and Wiki Editoras Lx. The initiative aims to encourage the participation of the Wikipedia editors' community in the creation and improvement of artivles related to Human Rights and the Environment.
There are five contribution axes:
- Social and environmental policy
- Citizenship and the environment
- Climate changes
- Exotic / invasive and endangered species
- Sustainability / Environmentalism

GLAM with Instituto Nacional da Mata Atlântica (INMA)
The purpose of GLAM with Instituto Nacional da Mata Atlântica is to upload the metadata and media collections of the institution to Wikimedia Platforms. Currently, they are spread across SPLink, GBIF, Jabot, Reflora and SibBR databases.
The collection has records of 120,000 specimens of Brazilian fauna and 53,000 specimens of Brazilian flora, especially from the Atlantic Forest, which is part of the biological collection organized by the Brazilian agronomist, ecologist and naturalist Augusto Ruschi throughout his life. Media and metada from this GLAM will contribute with various WikiProjects: Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata e Wikispecies.

Chuvash people in WMEE and Photo contest
Chuvash people and Culture in Wikimedia
In September this year an information about the NPO called "Museum of Chuvash Culture in Estonia" reached WMEE. Chuvash people are a small (approx 1.5 mln) Turkic ethnic group mostly living in Russia Federation in a region called Chuvashia. Slightly more than 300 are living in Estonia as well. Immediately we began talks with the chairman of their organisation Iraida Zahharova who was extremely keen on the idea and started to collect first materials for our planned virtual exhibition on Wikipedia!
For the past two weeks our contact and head of the museum Iraida has been on a trip to Chuvashia from where she hopes to collect even more artefacts regarding this small nation´s cultural heritage. In addition to the exhibition, the introductory part of the project also embraces in itself a quick overview of the Chuvash culture, its doings in Estonia and more detailed description of the most valuable elements in the virtual exhibition.
Newest co-operations and Photo contest
During September this year WMEE accompanied by the Estonian National Heritage Board held a photo contest "Elav vana linn", in English "Vibrant old city". The aim of the contest was to call people up to capture different lands- and cityscape scenes which depict living moments in Estonian historical city centers. The participants were encouraged to introduce the contribution of those people, institutions, communities, municipalities, etc. who work to ensure that the old towns function as a meeting point and continue to function even in a situation where gathering places tend to move to other more modern districts.
618 photos were uploaded to Commons under CC BY-SA 4.0 license. Winners were declared in five different categories for an example "The best action photo", "The best architecture photo" and "The best urban entertainment photo". Winner of each category received 300 € prize money. We in WMEE would like to use this opportunity and thank all the contestants for uploading their photographs to Commons!
GLAM Talk; Javanese Wikisource Workshop
In October, our team was mainly busy with preparation for November's Open GLAM Conference, but there's still some events going on, other than the closing of last month's Wikistories for GLAM Competition that saw participants wrote 385 stories and uploaded 937 new images to Commons.
Bincang GLAM - GLAM Talk
Started during the pandemic, our podcast series, called Bincang GLAM, or GLAM Talk, is rebooted again. Our first edition talked about Wikistories which were trialed in Indonesian Wikipedia. Our first guest was from History of Java Museum. She participated in the Wikistories for GLAM Competition and gave her feedback about using the tool, from a GLAM institution point of view. We also had Bona, who's the community liaison for Wikistories project.
Javanese Wikisource Workshop
Since it's launch last year, Javanese Wikisource has entered a steady period of growth, but we always needed new contributors to proofread the ever growing collection of Javanese books, in Javanese script and Latin. For that purpose, the Javanese community held a Workshop for editing in Javanese Wikisource (dubbed Wikisumber). For those who are interested in watching the recorded workshop, feel free to leave a message to the author of this newsletter.
Touring Club Italiano: updates and uploads
Touring Club Italiano (TCI)
We've already discussed about this important agreement with TCI in the June newsletter, here.
The end of the first fruit of the initiative will see the light of day by the end of the year and involves the online publication, under the Creative Commons license of two collections of cartographic materials, the approximately 70 off-text plates produced by TCI in 1929-37 for the Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani and the 126 plates of the Touring-CNR Thematic Atlas of Italy published between 1989 and 1992.
To date 163 items have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons (65 of which are part of Thematic Atlas of Italy) and the results are already astounding: there are already more than six hundred thousand views of the uploads and even more important ones are coming.

About the Dutch Wiki Loves Fashion 2022
Wiki Loves Fashion in the Netherlands
On Thursday 22 September, the kick-off for Wiki Loves Fashion the Netherlands was held at the library in Hengelo. There were eight people there who collaborated on articles about former textile entrepreneurs but also, for example, on an article about the hat. There was a celebratory moment when a tray of petit fours with the logo of wiki loves fashion was served.
On 7 October, a small group met at museum the Palthe Huis in Oldenzaal. After a guided tour of the museum there was a workshop to get to know Wikipedia. Some great edits were made about the dish towel as well about the well-known entrepreneurs in textiles, the Gelderman family.
On 26 October, enthusiasts met at De Museumfabriek, a museum in Enschede. After a dazzling lecture on Textiles & BIOTechnologies and the future possibilities in the textile industry, an introduction to wikimedia commons was given. The app was downloaded and those who needed assistance were given it. An introduction for wikipedia was then given and everyone could get to work taking pictures of the fibers mentioned in the lecture or describing the museum pieces for Wikipedia.
TDWG2022 and Molluscs
TDWG2022 conference report by Ambrosia10
I was recently funded by Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand to virtually attend the TDWG2022 conference. TDWG2022 is the annual conference of the Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG) organisation. This group, many of whom are associated with Natural History museums and institutions, work together to create standards, ontologies, guidelines, databases and datasets and attempt to connect and improve biodiversity data for the benefit of all.
I have been engaging with this amazing community since 2018 when I presented at the joint TDWG and SPNCH conference held in Dunedin, New Zealand. The friends and colleagues I was introduced to at that conference have encouraged and collaborated with me on various projects since that time. These collaborations have resulted in me contributing to research projects, scientific papers, workshops, editathons and a hackathon. My main aim in attending this year's conference was to be exposed to the advances and progress being made by and within the community. I was also keen to maintain relationships and make new connections within that community in order to assist with any efforts by them to engage with Wikimedia projects.
My personal highlight of the conference was watching Quentin Groom presenting on the recently published scholarly article titled The disambiguation of people names in biological collections. I was one of the co-authors of this paper. Quentin’s presentation summarised two years of work and compressed it into a 15 minute presentation undertaken at lightning speed. The paper had been published only the week before the conference and it was extremely gratifying to see Quentin introduce it to the community we hope will make the most use of it.
Another highlight were the presentations given during an interactive session on the role of the Wikimedia ecosystem in linking biodiversity data. Some of the presentations gave examples of how the natural history community is already putting the guidance given in our disambiguation paper into practice. I particularly enjoyed a presentation discussing the efforts of the paleontological community to engage with Wikidata. This group had organised and held two workshops this year, both of which I had attended. The presentation outlined the successes and challenges this group had when attempting to add and link paleontological data in Wikidata. I was pleased to see the group publish their Guidelines for Using Wikidata to Mobilize Information about People in Collections: A Palaeontology Perspective just prior to the conference. This document was created during the first workshop after I shared with them a resource titled Wikidata Notes for Bat Collectors that I had previously produced for a bat collector workshop. The Palaeontology group used my document as a basis for their work and then proceeded to massively improve upon it, creating a practical guide that can be reused by any group wanting to add collector biographical data to Wikidata.
Also in the Wikimedia ecosystem session was a presentation titled Using Crowd-sourcing Platforms to Increase and Spread Knowledge on the Biodiversity in Sub-Saharan Africa by Mohammed Kamal Deen-Fuseini Dnshitobu. He outlined issues concerning the lack of knowledge about sub Saharan species and the attempts by local communities to increase this knowledge through citizen science engagement with iNaturalist, the writing of Wikipedia articles in local languages particularly in Dagbani and Igbo, the adding of images to Wikicommons and the improving Wikidata taxon items.
A final highlight was Richard L Pyle's keynote presentation An Introduction to Scientific Names of Organisms, and the Taxon Concepts they Represent. Rich gave a wonderful crash course in taxonomic terms as well as outlining some issues and the attempts at solutions for both plant and animal taxonomic codes. This will be an extremely useful resource for Wiki editors who edit taxon pages or items but are not trained in taxonomy.
All the TDWG conference presentations were all recorded and will be uploaded to the TDWG Youtube channel in due course. I highly recommend any editors interested in biodiversity data standards and the efforts undertaken by this community to link specimens, datasets and databases into the biodiversity knowledge graph to watch these recordings when they become available.
Mollusc month at Auckland Museum GLAM by Prosperosity

One of the long-term goals for en:Auckland War Memorial Museum GLAM is to create pages for every species found in our collections, or to improve these pages with images of type specimens. October has been mollusc month, focusing on many of the endemic mollusc species found in Aotearoa. The Marine Department has almost 1,800 are primary types of mollusc specimens in the collection, many of which are professionally photographed holotypes.
This month, 12 new mollusc species pages were created, three genus pages, and a further 24 species were identified as endemic species to further work on. In addition to this, a number of species identified by Baden Powell have pages but no images: five pages had images immediately available from our collections, and the remaining pages have been flagged and will have photographs added once the type specimens have been photographed.
Requested biodiversity photographs by Prosperosity
Photographs can be an amazing tool to better add context and understanding to a Wikipedia page. Stage one of this project, which finished in September 2022, focused on reviewing all locality pages in New Zealand and adding photographs where possible. Stage two is focusing on Aotearoa's biodiversity: reviewing every single endemic species page, and adding quality images if possible (via Digital NZ, which has an image directory of NZ GLAM collections, and iNaturalist user submissions). Most fauna species with English language Wikipedia pages have been reviewed so far, and as of October over 600 species have been identified as needing photographs.
Once completed, the requested image list will be a very useful resource to share to different GLAM and research institutions in Aotearoa, ideally as a tool to indicate which specimens should be photographed (or have photos released under a Creative Commons license). Maybe one day, every single species in Aotearoa will have a Wikipedia page, and a nice photo to match!

Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 selection process in progress
The 10th edition of Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Poland proves that it is the contest which permanently enjoys hight popularity.
Over 9k photographs of monuments were delivered within the contest and the pre-selection process was in progress in October. Thanks to a great involvement of volunteers the set of less than 300 files is ready for the jury.
GLAM online meeting on evaluation of Wiki Loves Monuments in Poland
At the end of October the forth online GLAM meeting was organized. The goal of the GLAM meetings’ cycle is to get the community more familiar with GLAM activities and invite Wikimedians to contribute to the GLAM projects.
This time the community of Wikimedians was invited to share its thoughts about the contest. We dicussed what went well, what was wrong and how we can improve the organisation of the contest in the future. The evaluation process is still in progress and the final recommendations will be collected till the end of November.
GLAMorous October; Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade; CEE Meeting
GLAMorous October
A month full of thematic activities called GLAMorous October was held on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the GLAM program of Wikimedia Serbia. This thematic activity was consisted of two parts. The first part, the edit-a-thon on Serbian Wikipedia, lasted from October 1 to 16, during which 7 editors wrote as many as 82 articles, while 8 articles were improved. The second part, editing data on Wikidata, lasted from October 17 to 31, where 7 editors created 40 new entries, made almost 8 thousand edits to 1,190 items and entered 924 references!
Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade
A Wikipedian in residence at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade has started, which will last until the end of November. During the first month, 14 articles were written, 6 were improved, and 15 were illustrated, while 145 files were uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons.
CEE Meeting
At the CEE Meeting in Ohrid, which lasted from October 14 to 16, the Wikipedia in residence project was presented. We wanted to present the path of project development, ways of achieving cooperation, tips and tricks in project implementation, as well as the achieved results.

Women and architecture
The Stockholm Museum of Women’s History, Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design (ArkDes) and Wikimedia Sverige are hosting a series of three edit-a-thons on the topic women and architecture. The first one was at October 18 with only a few participants, and the upcoming ones are on November 15 and December 6. As a break in editing and writing, staff members at ArkDes will do short presentations about women architects in their collections and show drawings and items.

Sound upload for the World Day for Audovisual Heritage (27th October)
Wikimedia CH and the Département audiovisuel de la Bibliothèque de la Ville La Chaux-de-Fonds joined forces to celebrate the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage and the Year of Sound.
On this occasion, our GLAM Experte Amandine Cabrio led an upload from a selection from the Neuchâtel sound archives on Wikimedia Commons the 27th October 2022. Among these gems, recordings related to Radio-Hôpital, a pioneering local initiative that foreshadowed the arrival of local radio stations in the late 1960s. The files are freely accessible on the Wikimedia Commons multimedia platform in the following category: Category:Media contributed by Bibliothèque de la Ville de La Chaux-de-Fonds.
This upload took place among other events for the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage under the patronage of Memoriav, Switzerland's network for the preservation of the country's audiovisual heritage. For more than 10 years, Memoriav has coordinated the nationwide mediation and projects around the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.
SBB Historic
The SBB Historic Archives and Wikimedia CH organised a Wikipedia atelier the 5th November around the Year of Sound. Our GLAM Lead Sandra Becker gave an audio workshop and supervised uploads on Wikimedia Commons and edits on Wikipédia with our German community. On this occasion, sound files were uploaded on Wikimedia Commons and a few Wikipedia articles were created and/or modified. More information on the Wikipédia atelier on the Project page (in German). There were no new uploads or articles this month. This month was taken up with the WikiArabia conference in Dubai, where I distributed a handout about the Khalili Collections and their on-wiki representations. I have also been working on text related to the Foundation's project to diversify Wikipedia's representation of visual arts and doing preliminary organisation for two edit-a-thons on the topic, one in Oxford and one in London.
Asian American Edit-a-thons and More
Smithsonian in Hawaii
Kelly Doyle and Andrew Lih from the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative worked with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center on a series of content enrichment events focused on the launch of a new book, "We Are Here: 30 Inspiring Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Shaped the United States." The new anthology focuses on the biographies of 30 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, ranging from well-known actors and personalities to local activists, and was the genesis of a topic list for Wikipedia and Wikidata activities.
Edit-a-thon
The book launch included the first in-person edit-a-thon the Smithsonian has held since 2020, and was in Honolulu, Hawaii, at the Bishop Museum.
Doyle and Lih led the edit-a-thon with local community members and GLAM professionals and focused on improving the biographic articles and Wikidata entries related to the 31 individuals in the anthology. The event was a continuation of a previous online edit-a-thon, which focused on notable Asian American Pacific Islander women including those in the We Are Here anthology. The in-person edit-a-thon resulted in 23,000 words added to Wikipedia and the creation of four new articles. More outcomes from the event can be seen in the Twitter thread.
Portrait session
After the edit-a-thon, the Smithsonian held a book launch celebration at the Bishop Museum where Lih and Doyle took portrait photos of individuals for CC0 licensing. Some of the people in the book or notable local people from Honolulu had missing or low-quality Wikimedia Commons photos. The CC0 photos were uploaded to Commons and linked to their respective Wikidata entries and Wikipedia articles. An interactive knowledge graph that highlights the new photos and helps to visualize connections and patterns amongst the people in the anthology can be viewed here.
In the following days, a team of Smithsonian staff also visited the Manoa Heritage Center, Shangri La Museum, and the Hawaii State Art Museum to connect with local cultural and heritage professionals.
Wiki Wiki Shuttle
A trip to Hawaii wouldn't be complete without honoring the bus that started it all. Lih took fresh photos of the Wiki Wiki Shuttle at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. The shuttle bus was the inspiration for Ward Cunningham creating "Wiki Wiki Web" in the 1990s, and eventually led to Wikipedia.

First batch upload by the Content Partnerships Hub Helpdesk
The Content Partnerships Hub's Helpdesk, which provides help and advice to Wikimedians who wish to start or boost their content partnerships, has been operational for a while, with a number of requests from all around the world. This has been an exciting way to get to know the global Wikimedia community and their needs better.
In October, we assisted users Netha Hussain and OlafJanssen in completing an upload project they had initiated some time ago: medical illustrations published under an open license by SMART Servier. Over 500 illustrations have been uploaded by the Helpdesk staff, a great start for the Helpdesk uploads category on Commons. Keep an eye on it if you're interested in what the Helpdesk is doing!

View it! tool: now with Commons category search!
View it! now has a Commons category search
Per user feedback, View it! now has a Wikimedia Commons category search option.
Users of the tool have regularly requested for View it! to allow direct access to Commons categories without SDC-driven results. This month, the developer implemented a Commons Category (P373) filter when using advanced search. When using the P373 search, users are also given the subcategories to click through as well.
View it! is available across additional Wikimedia namespaces, now including Wikisource Author and Index pages. This change was a result of community feedback from our presentation at the October Wikisource Triage meeting.

Launch of Wiki Rescues Manuscripts
In September 2022, Wiki Rescues Manuscripts was kicked-off with the pilot year focusing on three different regions of Indonesia. Pusat Pengkajian Islam dan Masyarakat (PPIM), a research institute based in Jakarta, will be leading the Wiki Rescues Manuscripts pilot in Indonesia in collaboration with Wikimedia Indonesia and the community-led WikiLontar project, with the support of Wikimedia Foundation.
The project also includes a technical pilot which focuses on testing the viability of Transkribus, an AI-powered text and handwriting recognition tool, to support under-supported languages of South-East Asia.
Affiliates, communities, and organizations with interest in manuscript digitization are invited to sign-up below to become a learning partner on this project.
European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting
Between September 14 and 16, 2022, part of the Wikimedia Foundation's Culture and Heritage team was able to attend the 2022 European GLAMwiki Coordinators meeting. This was the fourth time this event has happened and it is seen by the European Wikimedia affiliates as an opportunity to share skills and best practices, coordinate projects, and consolidate connections.
During the event, the team managed to participate in several presentations and lightning talks. First, Fiona Romeo organized a workshop about Metrics and monitoring, together with Emil Chetty (Lead Product Manager) and Jessica Stephenson (Lead Learning and Evaluation Officer), both also from the Wikimedia Foundation.
Later, Giovanna Fontenelle presented about Crisis and GLAM, accompanied by Anna Khrobolova (Wikimedia Ukraine) and Susanna Ånäs (AvoinGLAM), in which some initiatives were shared, followed by a discussion with the objective of understanding if the Wikimedia projects are the best place for endangered cultural items and how to handle them once they are being uploaded and shared on-wiki. Regarding the lightning talks, Giovanna presented alongside Kamila Neuman (Wikimedia Poland) about the topic of welcoming newcomers and how we can exchange knowledge and experiences more regularly and clearly. Following that discussion and also thinking about newcomers, Giovanna addressed the issue of documentation and how difficult it is to document and describe initiatives in Wikimedia projects and how we can work together to improve it.
In addition to presentations, workshops, and lightning talks, the team also participated in discussions on several other topics, which should generate new initiatives soon. Stay tuned!
