Collections of Museums in Albania

Starting with Collection of Ethnographic Museum in Elbasan

Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group (WoALUG) have started a GLAM project to document as much as we can, collections about Museums in Albania. Also we are encouraging people whom have visited these museums and have pictures from different periods of the time, to publish them on Commons. We started with Ethnographic Museum in Elbasan, considering also that this museum is very old and not good maintained, some of the object are destroyed also because some years ago there was a flood. We have documented at least 100 objects.

GLAM+Wikidata at Ara Sargsyan & Hakob Kojoyan Museum

Wikimedia Armenia started collaboration with house museum of Ara Sargsian and Hakob Kojoyan since 2017. The co-worker of the museum Anna Gohar Sargsyan learned wikipedia tools and started to work in wikipedia, wikidata and wikicommons. Sculptor Ara Sargsyan and artist Hakob Kojoyan lived in this house museum since 1934. In 1973 according to the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR the house became a branch of the National Gallery of Armenia.

As a part of the collaboration started in 2017, on September 8, 2018 together with the museum we organized a wikidata edit a thon. We created an event in Facebook, shared the news in Wikimedia Armenia's and Ara Sargsyan & Hakob Kojoyan Museum facebook pages, as well as shared the event info in our mailing list.
More than 20 editors from Lernapat, Mrgavan, Ddmashen Wikiclubs and other interested editors who were familiar with wikidata tools from Summer Wikicmap joined the edit-a-thon which lasted from 11 am to 4 pm. Wikimedia Armenia provided the editors with the laptops and wi fi connection. The museum provied the editors with some catalogues and the materials from there were included in wikidata. The museum devoted some photography to wikicommons. The editors created more than 120 statements many of which can be found here. 6 new articles were created about the museums objects, 3 were improved. The editors had the chance to enjoy a nice tour in the museum, to walk in the sculpture garden and to edit both inside the museum walls and in the front garden of the museum.

Armenia!@MET

In September 2018 The Metropolitem Art Museum launched Armenia! exhibition representing the cultural heritage of Armenia dating from the 4th to the 17th centuries. The exhibition objects come from major Armenian collections: the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the Matenadaran (Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts), the National History Museum in the Republic of Armenia, the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia in Lebanon, the Brotherhood of St. James in Jerusalem, the Mekhitarist Congregation of San Lazzaro degli Armeni in Venice, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, the Diocese of the Armenian Church (Eastern) in New York, the Armenian Museum of America in Boston; and the Alex and Marie Manoogian Museum in Michigan.
The idea to start a collaboration with the above mentioned institutions belong to User:Pharos. For the beginning I made wikidata pages for the exhibition items and with the help of the User:Jane023 we created Wikidata list. The photos included in the list were already in commons and we hope we can work with these institutions for more materias and photos. In wikipedia we created 2 articles: Reliquary Cross with Relics of Saint George and Carved Doors of Saint Karapet Church of Mush.

Collaboration with regional Wiki-clubs in the frameworks of "Wiki Loves Yerevan" GLAM project

An active collaboration with regional Wiki-clubs has been initiated in September, 2018 in the frameworks of "Wiki Loves Yerevan" GLAM project. 11 Wiki-clubs from Armenia and Nakorno-Karabakh edited articles on historical buildings and streets of Yerevan, as well as notable people born in Yerevan. The collaboration lasted from September 26 - October 3. This collaboration yielded to over 50 quality articles with several new items created in Wikidata.

This was the first collaboration with wiki-clubs and a successful attempt to engage regional clubs in GLAM project.

Collaboration with Erebuni Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve within Community Weekend

On September 28-30, 2018 a two day meeting of Community Weekend was organized in Aghveran, one of the picturesque corners of Armenia. Within this short period a successful collaboration was carried out with Erebuni Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve within the framework of "Wiki Loves Yerevan" project. An article about the history and archaeological finds and evidences of Teishebaini or Karmir Blur, as one of the oldest Urartian settlements in the world, was replenished with scientific materials.

Another article, successfully replenished, tells about the excavations and finds in Shengavit early Bronze-age archaeological site that is considered the earliest account of Yerevan history and dates 6000 years. This site has been meticulously excavated during Soviet period and still contains much to be studied.

Marine Kirakosyan, the participant from Erebouni Museum-Reserve shares with her experience of the editing process:

"I'm really thankful to all those, who helped me greatly to start editing Wikipedia. This is something new for me. I've always wondered how articles were written in Wikipedia. Now that I have already got acquainted with the editing tools and the process, I can surely say that the collaboration between Wikimedia Armenia and Erebouni Museum-Reserve will continue in the future."

WikiTour AU

Throughout September Wikimedia Australia engaged with GLAMs, universities and researchers through the 2018 WikiTour Down Under, with special guest Andy Mabbett.

The 2018 Wikidata Tour Down Under started on Tuesday 11 September 2018 at State Library Queensland, who had invited an audience of GLAM professionals to a presentation and workshop with Andy Mabbett, on Wikidata and its relationship to the GLAMscape. Andy's presentation covered:

  • What is Wikidata?
  • Why does the GLAM sector need to know about this?
  • Who verifies the quality of Wikidata?
  • How can my organisation contribute and how will this data be used?

On Wednesday 12 September, State Library NSW hosted the Wikipedia Sydney Seminar in which Andy was joined by local Wikimedians who provided a snapshot of activities across Wikimedia projects.

Conferences

Andy and Wikimedia Australia were pleased to present and exhibit at two professional conferences.

ARMS 2018

Pru Mitchell and Andy engaged with participants and met with partner organisations in the exhibition hall, and Andy presented on Wikimedia and Open Science, as well as giving a lighting talk during the plenary session.

ASA 2018

West Australia members Gideon Digby, Tom Hogarth and Sam Wilson supported Andy at hands-on workshops, and Andy provided a well-received closing keynote presentation entitled: Wikipedia Loves Archives: Archives Should Love Wikipedia, Too

During the event a Wikidata item representing the conference was created and populated, and Andy wrote a Wikipedia article about fellow keynote speaker Claire G. Coleman.


Developing tGLAM: a landing-page generator for GLAM initiatives

Reasons for having an on-wiki landing portal for GLAM initiatives are manyfold. Firstly, it provides a reference point for Wikimedians to discuss and improve editorial strategies. Secondly, it gives visibility to the initiative, converging to a same site context, metrics, contact information and more. Thirdly, it can be a mechanism for tracking initiatives in different countries and projects.

To some extent, it is no exaggeration to say that each one of the GLAMWiki initiative Wikimedians run should have a landing page. Even more so: there might be a case for having landing pages on the same initiative in more than one project (Wikipedia, Commons, Outreach).

Nevertheless, to code this kind of pages can require a lot of work. Some GLAM initiatives, like the one Brazilian Wikimedians are running with Museu do Ipiranga, have a very sophisticated portal: see here. This requires quite some technical understanding of wiki-coding, bots, etc. In this context, and particularly for smaller GLAM initiatives, we might be at a point at which initiatives have no landing page at all.

This was our case in Brazil. We have been running very large initiatives but also smaller ones. Large initiatives have landing pages; smaller initiatives did not. Every time we wanted to provide a link to the smaller initiatives we would just give the general Commons category. We thought this was definitely not nice.

So, we have come up with the idea of developing a semi-automated landing page generator for GLAM initiatives. It has been called tGLAM, where the lower-case t stands for template. Ideally, it works like a form to be quickly filled out, with the name of the GLAM initiative, the main category on Commons, the general Commons category of uploads associated to the GLAM, contact information, Wikimedians involved, projects associated, key images, etc. The visual end result --though this example was not tGLAM-generated-- would be similar to the the landing portal of our initiative with the Brazilian National Archives. The template code and documentation in Portuguese are at: w:pt:template:TGLAM.

We have developed test cases for our first landing page generated with tGLAM:

Our main challenge at this point is to make sure we include on the template every key pieces of information that our GLAM and all GLAM initiatives --as the idea is to have this generalized, multilingual (now, it exists exclusively in Portuguese, though we are considering an English version)-- need to have. We have had a first meeting on what we are missing and should be there with the WMF GLAM team and are working on including their suggestions to the template.

And we need your inputs too, particularly before we develop an operational template. It is easier to code the template with what we need on it before we have an easy-to-use, fully operational version. Please, do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested in this.

At the GLAMWiki Conference 2018, we hope to inform part of the section on landing pages, here, around the development of this tool. Hopefully, many of you who are reading this will be interested in joining this conversation in Tel Aviv, in November.

European Heritage Days; Linked data for archaeology; Paris: Edit-a-thon at Mobilier National

On the 15 and 16 September, wikimedians hold a stand and a workshop at the Champs Libres (Museum of Brittany and library of Rennes) for the European Heritage Days. Like last year, we shared the space with OpenStreetMap. Amongst other things, we mapped the museum on OpenStreetMap and created the corresponding items about the rooms in Wikidata.

The pre-workshop presentation

On Wednesday, September 26, the Federation and Resources on Antiquity (FRANTIQ), a french network of libraries specialized in archaeology, organized at the Maison Archéologie & Ethnologie its second workshop dedicated to the alignment of the PACTOLS thesaurus with Wikidata. Created in 1985, the PACTOLS now contains nearly 30,000 terms covering the fields of archaeology and classical antiquity, initially intended to describe bibliographic resources in its union catalogue. Due to its specificity, uniqueness and flexibility of use, there are increasingly wider uses of the thesaurus in the context of editing or managing artifact inventories. Published autonomously, under free license, via the OpenTheso free software each term has an ARK identifier and the whole is downloadable in formats that comply with web data standards.

Continuing its logic of openness, in early 2017, FRANTIQ took the decision to align the PACTOLS with Wikidata via the Mix N'Match tool. For this purpose, the federation requested the technical support of Wikimedia France and Sylvain Boissel participated in the import and request of the data and contributed to the animation of the workshops. In a second step, reciprocal links will be established between the two vocabularies and translations and alignments with other repositories will be imported into OpenTheso. Today, with 25% of the thesaurus aligned, FRANTIQ is measuring all the challenges of its inking into the linked open data and wishes to intensify and accelerate the process in order to make the project a success.

The objective is twofold: to strengthen the role of the PACTOLS thesaurus as an essential resource in its field and to enrich the data on archaeology that deserve to be better represented on Wikimedia platforms.

Paris: Edit-a-thon at Mobilier National

On Friday, Septembre 21, a team of Wikimedians went to the Parisian center of the Mobilier National in order to help report and document high-end methods of handicraft. This day was orchestrated by Laurie and Ned, a team of EIG (Entrepreneurs for Public interest, kind-of "entrepreneur in residence" in various French administrations), as a mean to publicize a traditionally very secretive institution.

It is a part of the French Ministry of Culture, dedicated mainly to two missions:

  • to store and maintain in good condition pieces of precious furniture available for the presidential residences, the ministerial offices or the embassies and consulates;
  • to manage the three historic tapestry factories: the Gobelins Manufactory and the Beauvais Manufactory, producing traditional tapestries, and the Savonnerie Manufactory, specialized in knotted-pile carpets.

Visit

In the morning, we had the opportunity to catch a glimpse at the various workshops located in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. By teams of two or three, we went to meet the craftspeople in their rooms:

  • the three manufactories have each a dedicated place or story in the buildings,
  • there is a common "color chart" for the weavers, which is in itself a small department,
  • and a dyeing team producing the desired colors for each new tapestry,
  • the restoration operations are splitted between multiple workshops: one for the furniture (chairs and seats), another one for the chandeliers, clocks, locks and metallic pieces, one for the tapestries and a last one for carpets.

The weavers and more generally craftspersons welcomed us and showed us their workspaces, answering our questions and letting us film or photograph their tools and unique methods of production. It was an instructive, precious and globally appreciated time to exchange about their rare skills.

In the afternoon, we settled in the nearby office of the EIGs with the dozen participants of the morning tour. Following a quick presentation and introduction to the Wikimedia projects, they uploaded to Commons their photographs and films, and began to use them to illustrate various concepts on Wikipedia.

Outcome

At the end of the day, we had contributed to:

  • help 12 new contributors onboard the Wikimedia projects,
  • upload 316 files to the dedicated category,
  • use 59 of these files on Wikipedia (or Wiktionary) articles,
  • create two new articles on Wikipedia in French.


History of Women and Democracy, Wikipedia-Culture-Ambassadors and two GLAM-on-Tour-stations in just four weeks

Edit-a-thon "100 Years of the women's right to vote" Frankfurt 2018

The Edit-a-thon takes place from 31st August to 2nd September in cooperation with the Historisches Museum Frankfurt. During the weekend, the exhibition "Ladies' Choice! 100 years of women's suffrage" started at the museum. A visit to the exhibition was part of the event in Frankfurt. The event is part of a series on the subject. The next event will be in Stuttgart.

Wikipedia-Cultural-Ambassadors

This project is part of the European Heritage Year (see "WP:Kurier" contribution). The project takes place from 7th to 9th September in Kassel. The main objective of the project module "Wikipedia Cultural Ambassadors" should be to strengthen the community of Wikimedia projects in the subject area GLAM by qualification in relevant areas. Together with the department "World Heritage" of the German UNESCO Commission, we would like to create an offer to prepare interested community members for upcoming cooperations with GLAMs in the best possible way. On Sunday, the participants visited the Bergpark in Kassel, a World Heritage Site in Kassel. The aims are: GLAM activists are officially qualified and can contribute their knowledge and experience to future GLAM cooperation. The cooperation with the German UNESCO Commission as a relevant partner in the GLAM area is being strengthened and expanded.

What happens to the results? The contents, which are conveyed during the seminar, are recorded and subsequently published. This should also give prospective students the opportunity to qualify in this subject area.

In cooperation with the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg, a GLAM on Tour Station took place in September in the hunting lodge Grunewald in Berlin. There, among other things, the Cranach collection and the hunting museum is located. The results of the event could be seen on Wikimedia Commons.

For the first time, the Senckenberg Museum of Natural History Görlitz is opening its doors to honorary authors of the free encyclopedia Wikipedia. The approximately 15 participants and participants received first-hand knowledge during the two-day workshop. In lectures, guided tours of the collections and the museum library, the Wikipedians gain insight into current research results and can take a look behind the scenes of the research buildings. Wiki camps in Macedonia

During the holiday weekend on the occasion of the Independence Day of Macedonia from 7th to 9th of September in the village of Dihovo on the foothills of Baba mountain and peak Pelister near Bitola, the second Wiki-Camp was organized. The camp was attended by 20 young people from several towns in Macedonia who, through mutual acquaintance and socializing, had the opportunity to get to familiarized, instructed and be trained for editing articles on Wikipedia in Macedonian language by editing through the visual editor and source coded editing via the html code as well the new translation tool. Moreover all of the participants have been trained for creating a good quality articles by adding references, categorizing articles and formatting text in the articles. The second main focus of the training during the wikicamp was the uploading and licensing images on Commons Wikimedia. For the first time on this wikicamp has been conveyed presentation and workshop on Wikidata, whereby the participants have edited several subjects of articles. This have been done with the purpose of a better impact and instruction of participants with different profiles and most of them newbies toward GLAM related work. Apart from the editing activities the second main activity about which the participants have been trained was the manner of conducting expedition field research in the area of ​​geography, nature, agriculture, cultural heritage, architecture and archaeology through hikes on different places in the surroundings whereby the attendants have visited Dihovo with the remains of the first textile factory and an industrial building in Macedonia with all social facilities and natural landmarks such as the Kapejnci waterfall and the monastery in the vicinity on the second day and the villages of Brusnik and Nizepole in Bitola and their surroundings on the last day where over 130 photos were made available for free use. Within the editing activities during the Wikicamp in Dihovo, more than 50 new articles on Wikipedia have been created and more then a dozen were improved in Macedonian Wikipedia. Considering the success of this camp and the usefulness of using Wikipedia in everyday life, to hold more Wiki-camps during the spring and autumn in different parts of Macedonia for the next year and workshops and lectures in more cities of the state.

Wiki Camp Doyran 2018

Wiki Camp Doyran 2018 took place on the weekend of 7-9 September 2018, in Doyran, Republic of Macedonia. The Camp was a successfully and professionally organized camp for underage students for editing articles on Macedonian Wikipedia. Overall, the camp was a huge success regarding the stated goals and expected outcomes. We had 56 participants, 46 students, two lecturers, and others were involved teachers and GLAM Macedonia volunteers. The students were coming from 10 schools, all from different cities. As a direct result of the Camp one Wiki section was started and 300 new articles were created. On the Wiki Camp, there were 28 already trained Wikipedians, who are members of Wiki Clubs in Macedonia, and 18 newbies.

The sessions were split first two days: in one group there were the new users who were trained to edit Wikipedia and in the other group were Wikipedians who created articles and learn more skills while editing. The second day, there were two sessions: one workshop for photography, and the second workshop for advanced editing. The third day, after the morning editing together, the most successful editors were awarded, and we all together went back home.

Wikipedia for Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museum @ Malaysia Design Archive

On 15 September 2018, Wikimedia Malaysia, under the official Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia (WCUGM), held a Wikipedia meetup for the very first time in an archive entitled Wikipedia for Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museum under its Wikipedia Kuala Lumpur Meetup 5 official name at the Malaysia Design Archive. Representative of several galleries from around Kuala Lumpur participated in the meetup. The meetup was mostly about the presentation about Wikipedia and the Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museum (GLAM) movement.

User MYMMMC opened up the meetup with a set of presentation slide show on Wikipedia and its relation to the GLAM-related affairs. The presentation included the background and introduction of Wikipedia, general problems faced in the Wikimedia movement, collaboration with the GLAM institutions in other countries, importance of Wikipedia as the digital archive etc. Dody Ismoyo then continued with the demonstration on the creation of a Wikipedia article on the venue itself, the Malaysia Design Archive, and its other related Wikimedia projects, such as the photo uploads in Wikimedia Commons and its Creative Commons laws as well as the detail listing in its Wikidata page.

Various discussion was held with the participants after the presentation on the collaboration with their activities in which they hoped the user group can take part in it.

On September 5 and 6 we at Wikimedia Mexico co organized with the Secretariat of Culture of Mexico an Open GLAM event. The main objective of the event was a gathering of people around the free and open trends and practices, with a special focusing on public servants of the Mexican cultural sector which was called by the secretariat. The event was held on two venues, Laboratorio Arte Alameda and Centro Cultural España en Mexico, with the attendance of 300 persons during the two days.

By the Wikimedia community the event was attended by Wikimedia Mexico volunteers, also Rodrigo Barbano president of Wikimedia Uruguay and Alex Stinson, GLAM strategist from Wikimedia Foundation. By one side Barbano talked about the uruguayan experience around copyright and practices of digitalization. Stinson was present on all the sessions and gave a Wikidata workshop with a focus on GLAM persons.

The full schedule of the event is here. One of the conclusions of the event was the multiple opinions of the panelists around the heavily restrictive copyright laws in Mexico (100 years) and the obstacle in the dissemination of culture in the country. As a result of the event, a network of interested people will take form in the next months to continue the discussion and the actions aiming to have more GLAM projects in the country. This event was realized in the context of the agreement we signed past April.

Dutch National Archives

In September & October 2018 Dutch Wikipedian User:Mr Nostalgic uploaded >50,000 press photographs from the period 1940-1990 to Wikimedia Commons. This was done in an additional upload, on top of the earlier influx of 300,000 photographs from the Dutch National Archives to Wikimedia Commons. That upload, on which GLAM Newsletter reported earlier this year, was also initiated and performed by Mr.Nostalgic.

All images have a CC-zero license, which means they can be used freely. From a copyright perspective the years covered (1940-1990) form an interesting period. The current upload is in a way a bonus, consisting of photographs that were earlier skipped or excluded -or have been given copyright clearance since the last upload.

Usage

Usage of this collection is difficult to measure, because of the many different sub-categories. The largest category, the Anefo collection of press photographs, contained 301,000 photographs in Commons as of 18 Sept. 2018. Usage is quite good, with 104,000 images used in all language versions of Wikipedia, of which 14,500 distinct images from this collection (=almost 5%).

GLAM Wiki meeting, 1 October 2018, Tresoar, Leeuwarden

Until now, relatively few GLAMs from the northern parts of the Netherlands participated in Wikimedia-activities. To remedy this, and to increase awareness of GLAM-Wiki cooperation in general, WMNL organised a GLAM-Wiki meeting at Tresoar, Leeuwarden, on 1 October 2018. Tresoar graciously provided the meeting room and helped communicate the meeting. The meeting was divided in 2 parts: during the first half, Jona Lendering (Livius.org) and Else Gootjes (Erfgoed Gelderland) detailed their ongoing GLAM-Wiki work. Also, Sandra Rientjes introduced the Wikimedia movement and projects in general. During the second part, the GLAMs were asked to complete a small survey to identify suitable collections for upload and to find out how that would fit in their general open data policies. Some 25 people attended from a diverse range of GLAMs from Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe.

Aerial photographs from the Dutch Institute for Military History

The Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie (Dutch Institute for Military History) has uploaded a second batch of aerial photographs made by the Dutch Royal Air Force during the 1920s-1940s. This second batch consists of 1895 photos of cities, military objects (barracks, air fields, etc) but also the construction of the Afsluitdijk. This batch follows upon a similar batch uploaded in 2017. Both have received generous press interest and were eagerly picked up by the Wikimedia community. The 2018 batch can be viewed here; the combined 2017-18 batches can be viewed here.

Latest version GLAM-Wiki manual available

Erfgoed Gelderland has published a new version of the manual Wikimedia for heritage institutions (in Dutch). Via Wikimedia Commons you can download, use and distribute the manual (PDF-version) for free.

The manual contains a practical step-by-step plan for adding images, adding or improving articles on Wikipedia and publishing data as Linked Open Data via Wikidata. The document also explaind and emphasizes copyrights, the use of Creative Commons licences and the codes of conduct for the different Wikimedia-websites.

New in this version are the following topics:

  • standardcontracts for Creative Commons releases and licensing
  • a step-by-step plan for using the GLAM Wiki toolset, a programme for mass uploading files to Wikimedia Commons
  • an explanation concerning the new functionality for searching Wikimedia Commons

Wikipedia course for Historian societies

This autumn Erfgoed Gelderland will start a course for Historian Societies. During this free multiple day course ‘Writing for Wikipedia’ members of Historian Societies will learn to acquire practical skills which are neccesary for producing an adequate article for encyclopedia. The course will also provide backgroundinformation and the appliciations of the rules at Wikipedia. The knowledge coming from historical societies is a crucial part of this heritage. Already six Histrorian Societies from Gelderland are attending the course.

Together with OsloMet – Oslo Metropolitan University and The National Library in Oslo, a Women in Red project was started in Norway in September 2018 (project page). Taking part in the project are a group of students who are doing this as part of their curriculum for a bachelor in archive- library- and information studies. A part time position financed by Wikimedia Norge and The National Library by matching funds is also part of the project and will focus on using the collections at The National Library on the wiki projects have. So far, uploads have been made to Wikimedia Commons and WikiSource and lots of edits on Wikipedia and Wikidata have been done. The project will highlight the work of women recently in public domain who both wrote books and were photographers, but are pretty much forgotten today.


Researchers Days 2018

In September 2018 we took part in the annual Researchers Days festival by organizing a Wikimedia Norge event. At the Researchers Days festival various institutions working with research and knowledge are invited to showcase their work to the public. The festival is organized by The Research Council. At the 2018 Researches Days we’re building on the momentum from our 2017 event “How to write women back into history?”. This year's event was about considering different ways of making women more visible in the arts and culture and we presented our Women in Red project.

This year's #wikinobel will be the 24 October at The Nobel Peace Center, organized by Wikimedia Norge, the Swedish embassy and The Nobel Peace Center. Archival photographs and literary knowledge enrich Polish Wikipedia

The collaboration between Wikimedia Polska and the National Digital Archives (NAC) which started at the end of 2017, has so far brought over 6000 historical photographs by Narcyz Witczak-Witaczyński and other photographers. The upload began in early 2018 and new files were gradually being added to the category. See the collaboration description on Polish Wikipedia -->

Thanks to collaborating with Wikimedia, the National Digital Archives have added a Public Domain statement concerning rights to images on their digital collection website. This also enables individual Wikimedians and other interested people to reuse the images. Since late January, when first uploads took place, approximately 6000 files were uploaded to Commons. All files can be found in the Images from Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe category. The National Archives contain photographs showing a wide range of locations, historical events, notable people, sports and cultural events and daily life - consequently the images have been used over 3900 times on Wikipedia pages.

Heirlooms and European stories at Goethe Institut Warsaw


Sugar cubes, cooperatives, common myths and legends and many other themes originate from intercultural exchange. Titled „Heirlooms. European Stories”, the proejct by Goethe-Institut is aimed to collect and describe European cultural heritage: traditions, cultures, objects, styles which link three or more European countries and which illustrate our common heritage. As part of this project, on September 20th we ran a Wikiworkshop at the Goethe Institut to allow participants to begin writing articles in Polish, English or German on chosen themes from the project scope – from the Meisen porcelain thru Pilzner beer to Andersen's fairy tales. The National Library of Poland improves Polish Wikipedia

Wikipedia articles have been enriched by nearly 600 illustrations from digitised books uploaded to Wikimedia Commons by a team of editors from the National Library of Poland. The team of editors upload selected images to illustrate biographical articles, entries on history, Polish literature and the arts. The National Library team also adds references and external links to the articles: thanks to this, Wikipedia readers can quickly access full-text versions of books described in the Wikipedia articles.

Specialists from the National Library review existing articles on Polish-language Wikipedia and improve existing contents and illustrations (pictured: a photograph of Polish painter, Maria Płonowska - the only portrait of this artist existing on Wikipedia). The articles illustrated and edited by the National Library team are viewed over a million times per month.



Impact of GLAM seminars: Decentralization of GLAM activities

Serbian Wikipedia enriched by another museum’s heritage

During August and September, the Wikipedian in Residence program took place in the Museum of Vrbas, which opened its door for an enthusiastic Wikipedian, in order to help her increase free content online based on the sources stored in this museum. The culture and history of the city of Vrbas, as well as the museum itself, are now represented on Serbian Wikipedia through 25 new and 7 improved articles, but also with almost 350 free images for wiki projects.

Cooperation between Wikimedia Serbia and the City Museum of Vrbas was encouraged by the Ministry of Culture and Information, with the initial support provided to the Wikimedia GLAM Program. After the representatives of the Museum of Vojvodina attended the first seminar at the Ministry, this provincial museum initiated the organizing of another GLAM seminar. The historian and curator Pavle Orbović, one of the most valuable participants in this seminar, was delegated to this two-day activity by the Vrbas City Museum. He quickly and easily mastered the basics of editing Wikipedia, but, more importantly, the importance of the presence of the institutions in Wikipedia, as well as the mission of spreading free knowledge about cultural heritage.

"The first seminar that took place at the Museum of Vojvodina was very well organized and I found out everything related to copyright. However, the way of writing an article seemed a bit complicated, which was the reason for me to attend the advanced Wiki course in Belgrade. After this seminar, where I trained to write articles using visual editor, I realized that writing is much easier and faster. Also, it was immediately clear to me that we could conduct an internship program in our museum and that this would be a great move for the Museum in which I work."

Due to positive impressions that our workshops left on Mr. Orbović, it was very easy to establish cooperation with this institution, led by the Head of museum's exhibitions, archaeologist and Senior curator Vesna Grgurović. An initial meeting was held, right after all the parties were introduced to the goals and activities of the project and when the program was planned more thoroughly.

Wikipedian Oksana Mudri-Nedić worked for a month at the museum, uploaded images, wrote, improved and illustrated articles, but she says that all employees had given her immense help, and their enthusiasm and commitment to this project gave her even greater incentive to record the history of Vrbas.

Internship programs have been intensified this year and, after successful internship at the Museum of Yugoslavia, currently has a two-month internship at the Museum of Vojvodina, financed by the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia.

The Archives of Pirot will welcome their first Intern as of October 1, which will be the third archive in Serbia that co-operated with Wikimedia on projects for spreading knowledge about the cultural and historical heritage of our country.

The Museum of Vojvodinian Slovaks became a part of the global GLAM program

The Museum of Vojvodinian Slovaks in Serbian city of Bački Petrovac became the newest partner of the global GLAM project (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) that aims to represent cultural and historical heritage on Wikipedia. With the help of an experienced Wikipedia editor and a GLAM volunteer from Wikimedia Serbia, this museum released 65 photographs for wiki projects in just five days.

The partnership was a result of the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia and was initiated on a seminar in the Museum of Vojvodina which took place back in April. Director of the Museum of Vojvodinian Slovaks, Anka Seč-Pinćir attended the seminar and realized the potential of the presence of the museum’s collections on Wikipedia and helped organize the partnership.

"The partnership with Wikimedia started spontaneously. I met the representatives of Wikimedia Serbia during a workshop in the Museum of Vojvodina where I got the thorough and useful information. Because the people were very open and professional and because Wikimedia is a global organization that stands behind many enormous online projects, we were happy to work together. So we planned the “introduction” to a partnership that will last for years. Soon after we started a 5 day project. The Wikipedian that stayed with us added information about our institution; more specifically he edited articles, uploaded photos of the items in the museum, old photos and paintings from the museum’s collections. Aside from that he went around Bački Petrovac and Kulpin where he also took photos of various sites, specific places and the environment."

Because this museum doesn’t have enough employees who would dedicate their time for the selection of the materials (and the metadata that goes with them) and their publishing on Wikimedia Commons, Wikimedia Serbia sent a GLAM volunteer to Bački Petrovac so that a part of this job would be done efficiently. That's how Miloš Todorović, a former Wikipedian in residence and devoted GLAM volunteer, spent five days in this place in Vojvodina. In addition to uploading photos released by the museum, Miloš took 92 photos of cultural monuments and other sites in Bački Petrovac and Kulpin.

These results with such a narrow time limit show that the global GLAM project has another partner eager for a long-term collaboration that will further present the culture and history of Slovaks in Serbia on wiki projects.

Student Project at the Nordic Museum

The Nordic Museum began the third round of high school students writing articles on cultural & social history using the Nordic Museum Archives and Library. With help from the museum & Wikimedia Sweden, 33 students in their last year of high school will publish the results of their "gymnasiearbete" as new or improved Wikipedia articles.

Learning about sources on Swedish Wikipedia

The Library Data project – a cooperation between Wikimedia Sverige and the National Library of Sweden to bring more bibliographical data to Wikidata – is well underway. One of the major challenges we are facing is selecting the data to process and upload. The National Library's catalog contains information about books and other materials in the collections of dozens of libraries spread across Sweden, which is an enormous amount of data. Since we would like for our project to benefit the community, we embarked on a mission to find the most common sources on Swedish Wikipedia. The resulting report (in Swedish), listing the most common books and websites, was well received by the community, inspiring discussion on the perennially popular topic of what constitutes good sources. We are happy to embrace this chance to prioritize the needs of the community in a GLAM cooperation – hopefully, uploading data that people find relevant will lead to new ideas and tools that utilize it.


Botanical illustrations and Wiki Loves Monuments in Scotland

Details of an additional 363 artworks by Ferdinand Bauer from a late 18th-century botanical expedition were added to Wikidata. The data set now includes 2,091 works, including the complete contents of three books that resulted from the expedition. That dataset can be browsed as a map/timeline/species tree through this application, which is still under development and to which improvements have been made this month.

Early in September, Oxford's Museum of the History of Science released 156 images of astrolabes on Commons. This was reported in the previous newsletter. We are inviting other GLAMS with astrolabes to share their catalogue data: astrolabes that are added to Wikidata become visible in Astrolabe Explorer.

Martin met with staff of the Early Modern Letters Online project to show how the Wikidata community are reconciling EMLO person and location identifiers with Wikidata, and to discuss ways to import more of these identifiers.

Wiki Loves Monuments in Scotland

We are delighted to announce that Wiki Loves Monuments has been a resounding success in Scotland this year! In 2017, the ScotWiki community made their first concerted effort to drum up support for the WLM photo competition, resulting in the submission of 2100 photos. This year, we set out to beat those results with a combined Wiki GLAM and Wiki Edu strategy supported by our new WMUK Scotland Programme Coordinator, Sara Thomas.

Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 for Librarians Resource

We first laid the groundwork by introducing the concept of Wiki Loves Monuments in all our advocacy sessions across the library and archives sector, the museum and galleries sector and in HE and FE institutions in the months leading up to the event. We presented the competition as an opportunity to introduce students and GLAM users to concepts of open knowledge, heritage preservation and open licensed media in a fun and easily accessible way. We also did a great deal of work to ensure that all eligible monuments & listed buildings were uploaded into and correctly described on Wikidata, with the generous help of Nav Evans. 27,333 new items and 82,146 referenced statements were added to Wikidata.

Throughout the month of August, we recruited partners to run events and publicise Wiki Loves Monuments on social media. Our partners included the University of Edinburgh and its wikimedian in residence Ewan McAndrew, various libraries engaged with the SLIC GLAM residency, Museum Galleries Scotland as well as local heritage organisations such as Archaeology Scotland, Dig it!, Built Environment Forum Scotland, the Dumfries Historic Buildings Trust, and the Scottish Civic Trust. We produced a Wiki Loves Monuments resource for librarians, which was circulated across all public libraries in Scotland via the Scottish Library and Information Council mailing list. The resource was also adapted for museums and galleries and for local heritage organisations then circulated via our partners. The Scottish Civic Trust also gave us access to publicise Wiki Loves Monuments across all the Doors Open Day events that run throughout the month of September in Scotland.

As a result of this work, we managed to more than double the number of submissions from the previous year, with a grand total of 4374 images entered in the competition for Scotland. This represents a third of the total submissions for the UK, which stands at 13,185 photos.

Books & Bytes–Issue 30, August–September 2018

In this issue, we highlight a new feature of the Library Card Platform, global developments and, as always, a roundup of news and community items related to libraries and digital knowledge.

Library Card translation

The Wikipedia Library Card platform has been established as a hub for English-speaking Wikipedians to apply for free access to research resources, but previously its ability to serve non-English-speaking editors has been limited. As part of a push for greater global support, the Library Card is now on Translatewiki! This interface will allow easy crowdsourced translation of the platform by a distributed group of translators, and these translated elements can then be regularly pushed to the live site. This will open the platform to a much wider range of contributors.

Despite only launching on Translatewiki on 17 September, the platform has already accumulated partial translations in over 20 languages, with complete translations in Arabic and Brazilian Portuguese at time of writing.

Spotlight: 1Lib1Ref spreads to the Southern Hemisphere and beyond

An excerpt from the Wikimedia Blog post by Felix Nartey #1Lib1Ref is an annual campaign where librarians and other contributors to Wikipedia add references to improve statements with the ultimate objective of improving the reliability of Wikipedia.

In 2018, the Iberocoop Network participated in the #1lib1ref campaign (1bib1ref in Spanish) in Latin America. The campaign ran for three weeks in May 2018, to commemorate the birthday of Spanish Wikipedia. During the campaign, several Latin American countries participated in online and offline activities involving librarians and the general public to drive contributions on Wikipedia. In addition to the participation of the Iberocoop Latin American countries (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia and Mexico), the campaign attracted participants from Brazil, Portugal, France, Italy, Catalonia, Australia, Cameroon, India and Ghana.

The results of #1bib1ref from the Latin American participants were encouraging and a great start, given the limited resources and very limited prior planning: 70 editors made about 522 edits in 371 articles with the hashtag #1bib1ref, and possibly more without the hashtag. The campaign that emerged during the same period under the broader hashtag #1lib1ref saw about 940 edits in 358 articles by 132 participants in 12 languages. On social media, 32 countries made 1200 posts with the hashtag, reaching 1.8 million people, 3.6 million times.

Here are some highlights from around the world:

  • For the first time ever, #1Lib1Ref saw participation from the West African country of Ghana. While partnerships were sought with libraries to champion the campaign, the Wikimedia community also stepped in and actively contributed by improving sources on several articles on Wikipedia.
  • Wikimedia Uruguay organised a workshop on Referencing on Wikipedia for the Educational Documentation Department of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
  • In Argentina, two workshops were organised by Wikimedia Argentina for the network of librarians at Universidad de Buenos Aires and at the School of Librarians of the City of Buenos Aires.
  • In India, two workshops were organised by Krishna Chaitanya Velaga for librarians at the Kakatiya University and Annamayya Library in Warangal and Guntur respectively. At the close of these workshops, around 118 articles were improved and 24 new participants were introduced to the basics of editing Wikipedia and importantly, adding a citation! The momentum built from the campaign saw its way into the Advance Wiki Training (for users familiar with Wikipedia) organised by CIS-A2K and Krishna which focused on addressing reference issues as well as encouraging the use of reliable references and shedding more light on the Wikipedia Library Program and how the different language Indian communities could benefit in terms of acquiring sources in their own languages.

This indeed is a new turn for 1Lib1Ref. We were able to witness great growth potential in emerging communities firsthand and the void that needs to be filled. On the other hand, the campaign is gradually gaining more audience and transforming into a widespread activity in multiple Wikimedia communities and regions. We believe, in making the campaign more suitable to emerging communities we have generated the enthusiasm for participation from librarians and our friends in the southern hemisphere. Still to come, watch out for more activities from India and Iran in the coming months.

And of course, we invite everyone to join us for #1lib1ref 2019 kicking off in January for yet another opportunity to make Wikipedia even more reliable globally!

Wikimedia and Libraries User Group

The Wikimedia and Libraries User Group organised its first outreach activity—Book Swapping at Wikimania Cape Town, thanks to Bachounda (steering committee member). Pictures of some of the participants, books and the table are now available at Commons.

The steering committee met twice in the last two months. In the August meeting, the group's Whither WLUG? meetup submission for GLAMWiki Tel Aviv was discussed. The meetup would serve as a platform to engage with Wikimedia and library enthusiasts, and the user group members who are present at the venue. In the September meeting, the committee discussed assigning roles, to better manage the group and effectively dispatch the works of the committee. The voluntarily filled roles will be finalised soon and the results shared with the members. An open user group meeting akin to last year's Hangouts On Air will be scheduled shortly after the GLAMWiki conference. The committee also discussed laying some groundwork on the group's 2018 strategic plan.

Global

The Star Coordinator program is a quarterly award to recognize coordinators of The Wikipedia Library for their amazing work in their communities.

And the winner for the 2nd Quarter of 2018 is... Dr. Shweta Yadav

"In 2007 while still in school our teacher asked us not to prepare assignments from Wikipedia as it was unreliable". This was the beginning of her curiosity towards Wikipedia and to understanding how it really worked. Shweta further expressed that even 10 years after these instructions, she become a culprit of the same criticisms as she found herself offering the same advice to her students. In an attempt to do what was right and to clear her conscience in teaching her students the right way to use an encyclopedia, she first participated in a 100 Wikidays challenge. She was introduced to the campaign by a colleague who got her editing. Through these efforts she discovered her curiosity was justified as the instructions given to her may have been unfounded and erroneous.

Shweta gradually started outreach activities in Karnal to increase awareness amongst students and academicians about her discovery, and her efforts to completely detach the "unreliable tag" from Wikipedia landed her at The Wikipedia Library Program (TWL). She volunteered to become the coordinator for the Hindi Branch. "As a researcher I knew how knowledgeable a well-referenced article could be and that the availability of resources will attract good editors and increase quality of content." Her thoughts on how crucial well-referenced articles are to Wikipedia led her to the creation of the first branch in India, the Hindi TWL Branch.
