How to use talk pages[edit]

This is an old video that explains how to use talk pages. There have been changes to talk pages after this video was made, but much of the information remains current.

==Example of how a comment appears while it is being edited, before the comment is published==

Before a comment is published, the comment looks like this! Notice the "==" before and after the header, and notice the "-" and "~" marks at the end of this comment. When the edit is published, the website will reformat the text between the "==" markers to be a header, and will replace the sequence of "-" and "~" marks with the commenter's user name and the time that the user published the comment. --~~~~.

Example of how a comment appears after the comment is published[edit]

Here is how an example comment will look with a signature after the comment is published. The "==" markers are automatically hidden, and the header is automatically formatted. Also, the --~~~~ characters are automatically replaced with the name of the user who made the comment and the time that the comment was published.

Editing News #2 – Mobile editing and talk pages[edit]

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this multilingual newsletter

Inside this newsletter, the Editing team talks about their work on the mobile visual editor, on the new talk pages project, and at Wikimania 2019.

Help[edit]

What talk page interactions do you remember? Is it a story about how someone helped you to learn something new? Is it a story about how someone helped you get involved in a group? Something else? Whatever your story is, we want to hear it!

Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. Please share a link to a memorable discussion, or describe it on the talk page for this project. The team wants your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.

Talk pages project[edit]

The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.

The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.

Mobile visual editor[edit]

The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

Edit Cards[edit]

What happens when you click on a link. The new Edit Card is bigger and has more options for editing links.

Toolbar[edit]

The editing toolbar is changing in the mobile visual editor. The old system had two different toolbars. Now, all the buttons are together. Tell the team what you think about the new toolbar.
  • In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
    • One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
    • New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
    • Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
  • Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.

Wikimania[edit]

The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.

Looking ahead[edit]

  • Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.
  • Testing the mobile visual editor as the default: The Editing team plans to post results before the end of the calendar year. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: VisualEditor as mobile default project page.
  • Measuring the impact of Edit Cards: This study asks whether the project helped editors add links and citations. The Editing team hopes to share results in November. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: Edit Cards project page.

Videos in other languages[edit]

Hi Pine -- Thank you for working on this project. I think that at first, you'll be making videos in English. Whether or not you'll actually be working on it, I was wondering if you have thoughts or plans around how videos could also come to be in other languages? Definitely an interesting challenge. Also, I wanted to make sure you saw this site, containing new instructional videos in Arabic: http://warsha.wikimedia.org.il/ -- MMiller (WMF) (talk) 19:48, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

@MMiller (WMF): yes, initially in English, but I think that I can make Spanish translations with a small to moderate amount of assistance from a native Spanish speaker. There is enough variation in how Wikipedia language editions operate that I need to be careful not to assume that a video that is designed for ENWP can be translated for a different language edition of Wikipedia without taking into account variations in policies and workflows.
Please note that this project's viability is in question largely becsuse the work is surprisingly time intensive and there is currently no funding to support paid time for it, but I want this project to succeed and the community has previously expressed support for it, including for translations. I am hoping eventually to get non-WMF funding for this project but that is likely to be difficult. (WMF has previously provided grant funding but I have repeatedly underestimated how much time and budget is required for this project. I have concerns about conflict of interest if I accept WMF funds because of many past conflicts between the community and WMF, including this year's clash on ENWP regarding governance matters.) In the meantime, this is a volunteer effort for me. ↠Pine () 20:05, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

Best practices for help pages[edit]

@Trizek: I heard that you are involved in researching best practices for help pages. Would you be willing to provide feedback about the pages for NavWiki? Thanks, ↠Pine () 21:36, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Hello Pine, I'm still working on it. When ready, the best practices will be announced in the Growth team newsletter. You could then compare your work with our project. Trizek (WMF) (talk) 10:11, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
@Trizek (WMF): sounds good. ↠Pine () 05:11, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

Video Tutorial[edit]

Hi, I am Jagseer Singh from India, I work as a Wikimedian-in-residence in a school. I want to work on Video Tutorial with my students bt i don't know where to start. Can u plz guide me about the project. --Jagseer S Sidhu (talk) 06:23, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi User:Jagseer S Sidhu, thanks for your question. For which language edition of Wikipedia would you like to create a tutorial? Have you created video tutorials before? ↠Pine () 05:49, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
@Pine: I'll create tutorials in Punjabi Language. --Jagseer S Sidhu (talk) 08:14, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi @Jagseer S Sidhu: that sounds good. There is a large range of what people can create for video tutorials. If you are starting with scripts that someone else has already created and that you think are good for what you want to do, that will save a lot of effort. You can consider starting with scripts that have already been created in another language and then translating them into Punjabi, and making any adaptations that are necessary due to differences in procedures between Wikipedias. Another option is to take existing finished videos and simply add Punjabi subtitles, which probably would require the least amount of effort. You could also start from scratch, which would give you and your students the most experience but also requires the most effort. I suggest that you look at NavWiki/External Resources and see if any of the resources give you ideas, or are scripts or finished videos that you could adapt for Punjabi. You could wait for me to publish some NavWiki videos in English and then decide if you want to adapt them into Punjabi, but you could start your work much more quickly with some of the existing resources that are on the External Resources page. ↠Pine () 21:08, 10 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi @Pine: Link u have shares is really helpful but i'll wait for your English language videos and will adapt them into Punjabi. In between i'll try at my own and will share my work with you. Thanks for help. --Jagseer S Sidhu (talk) 15:07, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Video pointers[edit]

@Pine: I ran into this page after I read your email on wikimedia-l. I'm not aware of the details of this particular project, however, I thought you may find the following 2 links useful in your work:

Good luck with your project. --LZia (WMF) (talk) 20:59, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

  • @LZia (WMF): I'm trying to reply again, as my previous attempt didn't go where I wanted it to go. I'm using the mobile interface and I don't know how that edit got so misplaced. Thanks very much for the information. I'm hoping that this weekend I'll have some time to add resources to the table and to follow up regarding the Arabic language resources. ↠Pine () 21:43, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Upcoming newsletter for NavWiki[edit]

Hello DannyS712, Jagseer S Sidhu, LZia (WMF), Quiddity, and Ciell, I am likely to send a new NavWiki newsletter sometime this month. If you would like to receive it then please sign up on Meta at meta:Global message delivery/Targets/Tutorials Newsletter. If you would like to read the older newsletters then please see NavWiki/Newsletters. Thanks, ↠Pine () 05:47, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

@Pine: Thanks for the heads up. Also, I noticed that you are not a mass-message sender on metawiki - if you want me to send it out for you, just let me know --DannyS712 (talk) 05:49, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
@DannyS712: Thank you for the offer. When I was sending newsletters one problem that I had was that at least one subscriber's talk page uses mw:Flow, and if I recall correctly I needed to do some reformatting of the newsletter for it to appear correctly on that user's talk page. If newsletters are sent with MassMessage, how will they appear on a talk page that uses Flow, or is there a way to exclude talk pages that use Flow from receiving newsletters in the default format and instead send newsletters with a Flow-friendly format to those talk pages? ↠Pine () 17:37, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
@Pine: MassMessage has logic to post to flow pages, so it should work fine, but I don't think you can exclude them without removing the pages manually from the list --DannyS712 (talk) 17:39, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
@DannyS712: OK, hopefully this will work. I will try to find a talk page in Flow format that receives the newsletter and verify that the newsletter was reformatted adequately. ↠Pine () 17:41, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
@Pine: Thanks. --Jagseer S Sidhu (talk) 06:59, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
