De-sysopping

[edit]

Per Wikimedia:Inactivity policy, your account is due for having advanced user rights removed. If you would like to retain these user rights, please post a message on this talk page and use {{Ping}} to alert me. Note that this message is being sent to several users who are in the same situation and many have never used administrator tools. In the past, community standards were more lax about who received adminship or bureaucratship and between this policy and a further solicitation of consensus, we are reigning in some of the requirements for advanced user rights. You will also be receiving an email from me if you have it enabled. Koavf (talk) 21:27, 13 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

That's fine, Koavf. I got the tools with the expectation my less wiki-experienced colleagues may need some admin help occasionally, but it turned out not to actually happen. I have no need for the tools on this wiki. (btw: you are reining in, not reigning in.) Asaf (WMF) (talk) 09:34, 15 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Asaf, I learn something new from Wikimedia projects every day. Thanks. Koavf (talk) 14:45, 15 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

WikiData: a gentle introduction for complete beginners

[edit]

Hi Asaf (WMF),

Re: Your 3-hour video explanation WikiData: a gentle introduction for complete beginners

I am trying to post a link to this very informative video in a discussion on the Village pump of the English WikiQuote. Unfortunately I don't know what url to use to link directly to this video.

Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 17:49, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Ottawahitech. I am glad you find the tutorial video useful. You can link to the video on Commons using this wikicode:
[[:File:Introduction to Wikidata for Absolute Beginners (I-II) by Asaf Bartov (English).webm|Wikidata tutorial]]
And you can embed the tutorial in the page as a clickable thumbnail using this wikicode:
[[File:Introduction to Wikidata for Absolute Beginners (I-II) by Asaf Bartov (English).webm|Wikidata tutorial]]
Cheers. Asaf (WMF) (talk) 20:23, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi again,
I listened to a big chunk of Introduction to Wikidata for Absolute Beginners on Youtube and it was only close to the end of the 3-hours or more that my eyes started to glaze. It is definitely one of the best tutorials from wikimedia that I have ever seen. I guess I will have to sample more from the Bookshelf.
I have been dabbling in WD for several years, and this is the first time I am stating to understand why and how WD has managed to attract so many contributors. I did not know for example that anyone(?) can access the data collected and use SPARQL to analyze it. I had always assumed that this was only available to trusted users which I am definitely not, unfortunately.
I am off to see if I can figure out how to find out if the English Wikiquote has more pages about men than women, with a rough breakdown of when such pages were added, and if possible at all whether they were added by contributors of the same gender.
Thanks again for the wonderful video. Ottawahitech (talk) 17:34, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
