Subtitling of The GLAM-Wiki Revolution
At Wikimania The GLAM-Wiki Revolution, a short documentary about the GLAM programme in the United Kingdom, was premiered. We contributed to the translation effort of the subtitles. Jean-Frédéric prepared the text with the Translate extension on Wikimedia Commons, and Symac, Seb35, Trizek and Anne-Laure translated the subtitles. We plan to use the documentary in our GLAM outreach work.
Presentation of the Centre Pompidou partnership at the IFLA conference
On August 12, Sylvain Machefert spoke at the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions pre-conference in Paris. His communication was “Improving modern art articles on wikipedia, a partnership between Wikimédia France and centre Georges-Pompidou”. This communication was a presentation and evaluation of the editing workshops organised as part of this partnership signed in September 2013 (see TMIG coverage).

Aerial photography in Versailles
At the end of August, a small group of wikimedians took off near Paris for a flight which goal was to take aerial pictures of Versailles including the Château de Versailles. The first pictures taken are already online in a dedicated category.

GLAM at Wikimania
We are not alone...The secrets of local GLAM outreach
Amongst the other interesting sessions of the GLAM track at Wikimania, Lars Alvik, Wikipedian in Residence at the National Library of Norway, Axel Pettersson, project leader GLAM outreach in Sweden, longtime GLAM-volunteer Raymond and WMDE held a shared talk about how to connect Wikipedia contributors and local cultural heritage institutions on a sustainable level. Main conclusions: A shared understanding about the goals of cooperations for GLAMs and the volunteers, well defined roles of the GLAMs and Wikimedia and the effort to make the staff get Wikipedians themselves are essential to create a succesful local GLAM-event.
Open up!-Video at Wikimania
During the Workshop “Best practices for the evaluation of GLAM-Wiki cooperations”, we showed the film "Open up!" that has been produced at the GLAM conference "Shaping access" in Berlin last November. The film illustrates the benefits for GLAM institutions of providing open cultural data and can be used to motivate them to open up their digital collection for reuse. For those who like to reuse the film in their fields, we provide a version with English subtitles.

Talks at Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco
As part of our partnership with the Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco, Wikimedia Mexico performed its first joint activity with the Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco staff: two talks about Wikipedia, Wikimedia and GLAM projects. The talks were attended by 20 people in two days of work to learn more about the operation, values and politics of the Wikimedia projects and the way in which we will work in the coming months.
This training's main objective was to introduce the staff to the reasons and objectives of the partnering between WMMX and CCUT, and learn more about new ways of partnership and work between cultural institutions and free knowledge initiatives. This also served the purpose of preparing the staff for the next edit-a-thon to be held in there on September 20th, dedicated to the 1985 Mexico City earthquake.
Wikimedia Mexico begins talks with El Colegio de México
El Colegio de México, A.C. (commonly known as Colmex, English: The College of Mexico) is a prestigious Mexican Institute of higher education, specializing in teaching and research in social sciences and humanities. Wikimedia Mexico began talks with Biblioteca "Daniel Cosío Villegas", one of the largest academic libraries in the country, in order to perform a GLAM initiative in this library in the upcoming months.
In the past years, the chapter conducted talks and workshops on Wikipedia edition to some college teachers as Dr. Gilberto Conde in the Asia/Africa Studies College.

Content donation Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision
The collection of Polygoonjournaals (Dutch newsreels from the 20th century) on Wikimedia Commons is being expanded using the recently launched GLAMwiki toolset. Over 1500 new videos were added to the category Media from Open Beelden. For a list of unused videos in this category see this list (an always up-to-date list showing those items in a category that haven't been used yet in articles on Wikipedia, courtesy of Magnus Masnke). Examples of these videos can be seen on the right. Of course we invite you to use these video's wherever you see fit!
Wiki Project Natuur
As a direct follow up of Wiki Loves Earth a new project has started in the Netherlands. Wikimedia Netherlands, in cooperation with volunteers from different communities, especially from nl.wikipedia and nl.commons, launched Wiki Project Natuur (en: Wiki Project Nature) in August 2014. The project aims at enhancing nature related content on the different platforms. The project will take two years. Existing cooperation with nature organisations will be continued and new cooperations will be sought.
October 5th 2014, will be the closing event of Wiki Loves Earth NL 2014, where price winning pictures will be announced and prices will be delivered to the winners of the Dutch competition. This event will take place in Naturalis, the national biodiversity museum of the Netherlands in Leiden. At the same day a start will be made with Wiki Project Natuur. The museum will house a writing workshop on (Dutch) nature on this day.
GLAMwiki Conference 2015
During a GLAM meetup at Wikimania it has been decided that Wikimedia Nederland will organise the GLAMwiki Conference in 2015. The last time this conference was organised was in 2013 by WMUK. The preliminary dates of the conference are April 10-12 2015.

Upcoming content donations: RCE
The Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) did one of the largest content donations to date (over 460.000 objects) in 2012. RCE is currently planning new content donations, they'll start using the GLAMwiki Toolset to do the uploads.
A Sunday at a Museum
At August 31st, a group of 15 Wikipedians gathered in the early Sunday morning in front of a museum in a Dutch city to enter it. The Wikipedians came from various places in the Netherlands and the western part of Germany. The city is called Maastricht and lies in the most southern part of the Netherlands (Limburg), close to the borders with Belgium and Germany nearby. This WikiSunday was organized by Wikimedia Netherlands to get users from Wikipedia become acquainted with the Bonnefanten Museum as the museum wants to start a collaboration with Wikipedia.
First we had a short introduction from the museum. Then we had some time to socialize and talk with each other with something to drink and a typical Limburgisch food, a Limburgse vlaai. After the socializing, we had a tour through the museum in what we got information about the various parts of the museum and the exhibited pieces. Afterwards we had a free walks through the museum.

#Dåochnu; Wikimania; members meeting

During August two workshops for the photo copying contest #dåochnu (then and now) were held. The one at Göteborg City Museum had some new visitors coming to the workshop, and also some participants uploading images, while the one at the Royal Coin Cabinet in Stockholm only had already active Commons users showing up. The idea of the contest, organized by Europeana, the National Heritage Board and Wikimedia Sweden is to find an old photo in the Europeana database and make a new photo as similar as possible and upload it to Commons. All new photos, with links to the old ones, can be found here.
Wikimania
A total of 19 swedes were present during Wikimania in London. In the GLAM track Axel Pettersson were part of a presentation on local outreach along with representatives from Wikimedia Deutchland and Wikimedia Norway. In a Video to Commons workshop Prolineserver continued building on a converting and uploading tool that will make it easier to convert videos to free formats and upload them to Commons. John Andersson joined the Wikimedia task force, a task force set up to give recommendations on how to develop cooperation and technical tools shared by the organizations. Jonas Öberg and Peter Liljenberg from Commons machinery gave a presentation on attribution and the Elog.io tool they are building to make attribution and reuse of free material easier, starting with Wikimedia Commons.
Members meeting
At the Wikimedia Sweden members meeting in August the vision, strategy and goals were discussed among members, board members and staff. According to the members we are on track with what we do in the GLAM area, but they also want to see more statistics and outreach to new institutions and users. Wiki Loves Monuments
The prize table for our local Wiki Loves Monuments contest had a huge re-fill during August. Through our collaboration with the Council of Working life museums we received several gift cards for rides with steam trains, visits to museums and paintings. Our ongoing collaboration with the Council of Central museums we got some nice books, and gift cards for visits to different museums. Already on the table we have gold passes for a webpage with courses in photography and image editing.

The UK's Wikimedians were proud to host the tenth Wikimania at the Barbican in London on 8-10 August, (with pre-events on 6-7 August). Around 2,000 people attended, including representatives of several of our GLAM partners, as well as Wikimedians from around the world, many of whom work on GLAM projects in their home countries - it was great to catch up, share experiences and plot future collaborations.
Naturally, GLAM featured prominently in the hackathon and the official programme, with a number of talks by UK and overseas volunteers, and several winners in the Wikimania UK annual awards (see below).
Wikimania also saw the premiere of The GLAM-Wiki Revolution, a documentary looking into the work and history of Wikipedians-in-Residence at various institutions across the United Kingdom.

Yorkshire
July saw the launch of the year-long Wikipedia Yorkshire Network Project. Britain's first regional GLAMwiki project. The project gives the opportunity for Yorkshire & Humber's 150 registered museums to engage with Wikipedia. Initial contact has already been made with Craven Museums, Ripon Museums, Barnsley Museums, Shandy Hall and York Minster. It would be impractical for the project to engage all 150 museums so the aim is to reflect their diversity: particularly smaller and local government museums, as these struggle to work with GLAMwiki. The project is under the wing of Museums Development Yorkshire and based at York Museums Trust. These institutional connections make it much easier to gain access to museums staff around the county and the Museums Development Officers have a very good idea of the digital capacity and needs of the museums.
Plans are afoot for an editathon in the Autumn based on 'Images of Yorkshire' and there will be training events offered to staff and volunteers at several of the museums.
Cancer Research UK
Medical Wikipedians event at CRUK – August 7th
The day before Wikimania 2014, CRUK hosted a meeting with medical editors of Wikipedia in London which was a great success, with Wikipedian attendees from 5 continents, and CRUK people from several different specialized teams – many thanks to those who attended!
The programme concentrated on using accessible language, with a presentation by Henry Scowcroft, and a discussion of some specific issues CRUK had identified with some of the headings in the recommended layout and contents for articles on medical conditions at Wikipedia's Manual of Style for Medical articles. The need for changes was readily agreed by those present, and is now being discussed by the community online – changes look certain to happen. At the meeting we also explained the different types of online information available from CRUK.
Wikimania 2014 – Henry Scowcroft and John Byrne co-presented with others for two talks, and there were a number of other good mentions of the CRUK project by other presenters. The project has strong supporters in the medical editing community, and has attracted plenty of attention more widely.
CRUK images released on open licenses
We had our first release of images on an open license a month ago – 390 diagrams from the CancerHelp pages. These have been enthusiastically received by the medical Wikipedians, and already 176 of them are used in Wikipedia articles, 14 twice, which is a phenomenally quick uptake. They are SVG format files, which means that where appropriate the text labels in the images can easily be translated for use in other languages. That hasn’t happened yet, but it will.
The Governance Panel to confirm that other images are suitable for release has had its first meeting. Only certain types of unproblematic images will be involved. The idea of releasing the images is not just to allow use on Wikipedia, but anywhere else. One advantage of this is that it will save CRUK from having to respond to the many requests for permission to reuse they already get, and allow.
Wikipedia articles
We've had the preliminary reviews for our main target articles on cancers of the lung, brain, oesophagus and pancreas. The amount of work needed varies very considerably! CRUK also did a quick review of Endometrial cancer , which en:User:Keilana has been working up, and has now been nominated at FAC.
In the news
Proton therapy was augmented. It suddenly got 7,000 views on August 31st, instead of the usual 220-odd daily count.
For Children’s Cancer Awareness Month: Childhood cancer is functional but basic, and doesn’t have the new UK figures, announced September 1st.
Royal Society
Although the term of their Wikipedian in Residence finished in July, the results continue to appear, as the Royal Society has released their official portrait photographs for all the 2014 new Fellows and Foreign Members, taken on their formal installation day (and unless they weren't present or opted out of release on an open license). The images are already being heavily used on Wikipedia, with the photograph of Professor Martin Hairer in use on fourteen language versions of Wikipedia within a month of being uploaded.
John Byrne who was Wikimedian in Resident at the Royal Society when the image release was planned said "I'm really pleased that 38 of the images have already been added to articles - mostly by User:Duncan.Hull. As usual, many of the new 2014 Fellows don't have articles yet, though several have already been added, and I'm sure that having a high-quality photo available will encourage new biographies. The intention is for this now to be done every year, which is fantastic." Jonathan Cardy Wikimedia UK's GLAM organiser said "we have been discussing this sort of release with various organisations for some time, and are delighted that the Royal Society has taken the opportunity to be a trailblazer here. A good quality photograph is a really important part of any biography of a living person, and we hope that other organisations will follow the Royal Society's example by openly licensing professional quality images of important people associated with their organisation."

Open Access at Wikimania; Citathon
Open Access at Wikimania
There was a flurry of sessions around Open Access at this year's Wikimania as part of the Open Scholarship track. These included a panel with Jimmy Wales, several keynotes - e.g. one by Elizabeth Marincola - as well as sessions with Phil Bourne or Cameron Neylon and several sessions by members of WikiProject Open Access. There clearly was an interest from both the Wikimedia and the scholarly communities to enhance interactions.
Citathon
A key theme this year at Wikimania were citations. This started with the citathon - a table at the hackathon, where people would discuss and hack on handling references and citations - and continued well into the following days, e.g. with a panel on reforming citations across Wikimedia projects as well as sessions on Citoid or the Open Access signalling project. During Wikimania, CrossRef announced a new initiative to help curate citation metadata on Wikimedia projects.
