Intense end to a year of GLAM-Wiki activities in Poland
ByWikiMatejko action continues
December was the second month of the WikiMatejko editing action organized jointly with the National Museum in Krakow.
The goal of the action is to enhance Wikipedia and its related projects with high-quality content, illustrations, and data related to the artist, Matejko, and his life and work.
In December, its participants created and developed Wikipedia entries about Jan Matejko's work and the figures and places associated with him. They are supported in this by the staff of the National Museum in Cracow and experienced Wikipedians. The first publications are already appearing on Wikipedia.
In January, we plan to have action participants publish new and developed articles, and then train them to create open educational resources based on content from Wikimedia projects, as well as translate articles and edit Wikidata. WikiMatejko editing action page in Polish can be found here. There are plans to translate WikiMatejko page to English.
Presentation for Wikiteka participants
On December 11, Kamila Neuman, Open Culture Manager at Wikimedia Poland, was a guest at an online meeting of the Wikiteka course, where she told its participants about the Wikimedia Commons project, which can be a source of illustration and inspiration for education.
Kamila has already had the opportunity to meet Wikiteki participants in person during the course's inauguration this August in Katowice, Poland, where she presented the GLAM-Wiki projects and their potential for use in education. As part of the meeting, Kamila also encouraged people to join the activities in the WikiMatejko editing campaign related to the preparation of open educational resources.
Wikiteka is a one-year nationwide program by Wikimedia Polska designed to enhance the leadership competencies of both male and female librarian teachers. The project utilizes open educational resources, including Wikipedias and sister projects, as well as technology. It aims to cultivate leadership skills by empowering and encouraging participants.
Online meeting of PL WIR
On December 14, the seventh online meeting of wikipedians in residence took place, organized by Kamila Neuman. The meeting was attended by Wojtek Szczęsny, WIR at the National Library in Warsaw, Grzegorz Gogacz, WIR at Koszykowa Library, and Agata Stadnicka, wikipedian and former Open Culture intern.
Meetings with wikipedians in residence are a space for sharing knowledge and experience and setting common standards for wikiresidency activities.
During the December meeting, Kamila shared her experiences and inspirations brought back from the GLAM-Wiki conference in Montevideo. The meeting was also an opportunity to talk about plans for the next year, especially the development of wikiresidencies and joint activities to promote GLAM-Wiki.
European GLAM-Wiki Coordinators meetup
The sixth online meeting of the European GLAM-Wiki Coordinators this year was held on December 12.
This time, participants of the GLAM-Wiki conference, who were asked to share their impressions and inspirations after the November conference in Montevideo, were invited to the meeting as guests. The meeting was co-hosted by Kamila Neuman (WMPL) together with Michelle van Lanschot (WMNL), and was attended by 18 people. Among those who shared their post-conference insights were Virginia Poundstone - Product and Data Manager at WMF, Brigitte Vézina - Director of Policy and Open Culture at Creative Commons, and Edward Betts - Director of Internet Archive UK.
Traditionally, it was also an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience in the GLAM-Wiki area.
The online meetings of the European GLAM-Wiki Coordinators were initiated after the coordinators' meeting in Prague in September 2022. Their purpose is to exchange knowledge and experience on an ongoing basis and to build networks that support coordinators in their work in the GLAM-Wiki area. To date, a total of seven meetings have been held.
The organizing team includes: Michelle van Lanschot from Wikimedia Netherlands, Giovanna Fontenelle from the Wikimedia Foundation and Kamila Neuman from Wikimedia Poland.
Presentation for WMPL team after GLAM-Wiki Conference in Montevideo
During the annual team-building meeting of the Board of Directors and the Wikimedia Poland staff team, Kamila Neuman presented her experiences from the GLAM-Wiki conference in Montevideo, sharing her impressions of the speech and workshop she led. Her presentation touched on key issues of the GLAM movement such as effective collaboration, knowledge and experience sharing, and ways to improve and optimize operations.
On the occasion, Kamila expressed gratitude to the Wikimedia Poland team for their support in preparing the workshops and presentations at the conference. She also shared a number of photos from her non-conference time as well, which gave her account a personal touch.
