Capturing public art with drones
ByDroneArt Helsinki!
Wikimedia Finland celebrated public art during the Nordic Open Data Week. Wikimedia Sweden paid a visit to Wikimedia Finland during the week, right in time to participate in the DroneArt Helsinki! -event.
The gathering for the photoshoot turned into a mini seminar with presentations about how to write in Wikipedia about public art, the Public art project by Wikimedia Sweden, and discussions about the Freedom of Panorama. Finland has FoP for buildings, but not for works of art.
We headed out in the wild windy weather equipped with a drone and an action camera with a long monopod to capture one or two works of art. After recording, we returned to workshop the results together. The numerous pictures were meticulously turned into a point cloud, and a 3D mesh model was created from that. There was an additional opportunity to 3D print that model in another linked event. Read the blog post about the event with more images.
The week was organized as a wide collaboration of actors across the Nordic countries.
Hack4NO
Wikimedia Finland also participated in another Nordic Open Data Week event in Norway. The maps hackathon #Hack4NO was organized by Kartverket, the national mapping agency of Norway. During the event, two maps mass uploads were prepared, one of which is still pending. The Senate Atlas from the National Archives of Finland, created by the Russian Military Topographic Department in the turn of the 20th Century were brought to Wikimedia Commons.
Freedom of Panorama
Wikimedia Finland also participates in the campaign to activate full Freedom of Panorama in Europe. Most of the Finnish MEPs have responded to our enquiry, and the majority are in favor of full FoP. The campaign page explains the question and records the MEPs' replies.
The Wikipedia Library
We are launching The Wikipedia Library in Finnish Wikipedia as Wikipedian Lähdekirjasto. So far we have established the basic sites and have gathered volunteers. At the moments six wikipedians are interested to participate as coordinators, however, we still have to share responsibilities. We also already have one interested donator, so once we have all the basic sites properly functioning, we can easily move to getting donations.
