The question of whether Wikipedia can serve as an inspiration for the future knowledge organization of libraries is explored in a recently published knowledge overview (in Swedish). This overview delves into the connection between the mission of libraries and the Wikimedia movement. Alongside the potential synergies in information organization, the report emphasizes the promotion of shared culture memory, the importance of source criticism, and the value of participation as central perspectives.
According to the overview, working with Wikipedia can be a way for libraries to embrace their democratic mission, for example, by highlighting underrepresented groups both as users and in the content of articles.
The knowledge overview is presented by Karolina Andersdotter, a librarian and PhD candidate in information science at Åbo Akademi University. It is made in collaboration with Biblioteksutveckling Sörmland, which investigates how libraries can strategically work with Wikipedia and other platforms to strengthen people's media and information literacy and contribute to a more equitable internet.
