Wiki Loves Living Heritage in Albania
Wiki Loves Living Heritage project essentials in Albania
Wiki Loves Living Heritage is a project that Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group joined and launched in June 2023 as part of the Wiki Loves Living Heritage world campaign.
Over 10 months in collaboration with Kujto.al Foundation in Tirana, Albania, we worked closely to upload recordings of collective memory, testimonies, and real-life situations in Albania, shedding light on people’s experiences during communism.
The 28 testimonies cover many topics, including deportation, arrests, imprisonments, etc.
With many testimonies uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, we are now preserving Albania's collective memory, which serves to illustrate articles on Wikipedia about communism and dictatorship in the future and is now part of the free knowledge-sharing platforms.
Below is the category of videos on Wikimedia Commons.

Stay tuned for an upcoming editathon we want to develop with Kujto.al Foundation, where we will train our community to write articles on Wikipedia about collective memory and stories in Albania.
Albania and Kosovo’s Contribution to the CEE Spring Campaign 2024
From March to May 2024, Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group focused on translating and editing articles about the CEE region’s history, culture, people, and traditions to bridge the understanding of communities in this region.
This year, Wikipedians in Albania and Kosovo contributed to this campaign, translating 41 articles and improving 44.
Contributors focused on translating historical articles, notable women, and cultural traditions.

Partner Project between Wikimedia Australia, the Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers (ANZSI) and the School of Information and Communication Studies at Charles Sturt University (CSU SICS)
The partner project between Wikimedia Australia, the Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers (ANZSI) and the School of Information and Communication Studies at Charles Sturt University (CSU SICS) officially ended on 31 May, but it will certainly not be the end of the Library and Information Science WikiProject.
Some highlights of the project have included:
- a core group of people actively developing our skills and filling gaps in in library and information science (LIS)-related content on the Wikimedia platforms
- participants enjoyed the opportunity to broaden their horizons by meeting new people and learning new skills in a fun and supportive environment
- Due to this project, CSU SICS students have started professional placements with Wikimedia Australia. This is a fabulous opportunity for the students and for the Wiki world!
- More Wikidata items have been added for indexers and librarians from Australia

Wiki Loves Mato Grosso
Wiki Loves Mato Grosso is an initiative organized by Wiki Movimento Brasil (WMB), with support from the Wikimedia Foundation. It aims to highlight Mato Grosso's cultural, historical, and natural heritage on Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia in Portuguese. In 2024, Wiki Movimento Brasil (WMB) will mobilize volunteer editors, institutional partners and Mato Grosso communities to improve coverage of Mato Grosso on the free internet! And GLAM institutions are important partners for filling in the image and content gaps.
Knowledge gap
Mato Grosso is the third largest state of Brazil. It is part of the Center-West region and it contains 142 municipalities. In its capital Cuiabá is located the Geodesic Center of South America. Its territory is covered by three types of biomes: Amazon, Pantanal and Cerrado. And what to say about Chapada dos Guimarães National Park and its rugged terrain with dramatic cliffs and waterfalls...
The cultural diversity of this State was built by Pantanal's riverine, quilombola and indigenous peoples; expressed in arts, mythology, dances (such as lambadão cuiabano, siriri and cururu), and gastronomy (such as the Maria Isabel, banana farofa, chicken stew and the famous baguncinha burger - which has become intangible heritage of Cuiabá).
Despite of its importance, only 46 municipalities have one or more images on Wikimedia Commons; only 7 of the 110 assets listed by IPHAN have Wikipedia articles. Mato Grosso is definitely one of the most underrepresented Brazilian states on Wikimedia platforms.
New partner in Mato Grosso
We are happy to announce our first GLAM-Wiki partnership for Wiki Loves Mato Grosso campaign: Acervo de Literatura Digital Mato-Grossense (ALDMT). This project maps digital literature produced by authors born in the State of Mato Grosso. The collection shows how computer technologies and media have been creatively appropriated by them, being "a sample of how Mato Grosso's prose and poetry are gaining new contours on the Internet". This partnership will upload metadata about artists from Mato Grosso on Wikidata.
This GLAM-Wiki partnership in Mato Grosso will help us to fill some knowledge gaps and are part of the activities relates to two axes of WMB's strategic planning to be implemented between 2023 and 2025:
- Foster and diversify partnerships for open knowledge in Brazil
Expand the list of collaborations within cultural and educational institutions, activist groupss, government entities and open knowledge organizations, spread throughout the different regions of Brazil. - Promote knowledge equity
Articulate individuals and groups to act on knowledge gaps or on the systemic bias in the content of Wikimedia projects.

Wikidata Workshop - Optimizing the visualization of collections with queries
On June 6ht, our Products and Technology manager, Éder Porto, presented a workshop to 30 attendents on how to use Wikidata to explore and visualize collections efficiently. The objectives were to learn how to build Wikidata queries and different visualization formats. Attendents were presented to Wikidata main concepts and to Wikidata Query Service.
This activity is part of our partnership with the Library of the School of Communications and Arts at the University of São Paulo.
You may see some interesting visualization of collections with queries on Museu Paulista's GLAM page as the one presented below: Type of works in each collection of the Museu Paulista.

"Celebrating is Resisting" Photowalk
On June 13, 2024, the Biblioteca Escolar Municipal do Dique - José Lins do Rego, in partnership with Wiki Movimento Brasil, organized an event for its community: the Celebrating is Resisting Photowalk. This event was the main activity to celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the library, located in the Jardim América, a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The event aimed to encourage children who frequent the library to document their neighborhood, which, before the photowalking, had only nine images on Wikimedia Commons and none of the library. The activity also marked the restructuring of the reading space, which, after being affected by a flood in January 2024, is in the process of renewing its collection and has already installed six new computers. Through this effort, 92 new photographs of the neighborhood were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons with the support of around 25 children.
With this action, in addition to expanding the neighborhood's representation on Wikimedia Commons, we were able to discuss, with the lightness of a children's perspective, the invisibility faced by the poorest sections of society, both offline and online.

Music for your delightment
Musica Brasilis brings to you another 377 sheet musics by 138 Brazilian composers. Among them:
Musica Brasilis is a project and a portal that makes available Brazilian music repertoires of all times and genres, but mostly metadata about Brazilian composers and scores. Rosana Lanzelotte is one of the Brazilian leading harpsichordists and the coordinator of this huge and ambitious project that aims to rescue, catalog and disseminate Brazilian compositions from neglected paper collections to open-licensed digital sheet musics.

New batch from Midiateca Capixaba
A set of 227 media from Arquivo Público do Estado do Espírito Santo, made up of posters of cultural activities such as fairs, plays, musical performances and film shows held in cities in the state of Espírito Santo. The collection came from the State Department of Culture, which collected posters of events held by the state government, and also received donations from people who knew about the collection and wanted to contribute to the preservation of Espírito Santo's cultural memory.
See the Midiateca Capixaba' GLAM page and the uploaded media.
New batch from Museu Paulista
One of our long-term GLAM-Wiki partners is "Museu Paulista" (commonly known as Museu do Ipiranga), a main museum of the University of São Paulo. It is a Brazilian history museum located near where Emperor Pedro I proclaimed the Brazilian independence on the banks of Ipiranga brook in the Southeast region of the city of São Paulo, then the "Caminho do Mar," or road to the seashore. It contains a huge collection of furniture, documents and historically relevant artwork, especially relating to the Brazilian Empire era.
As part of our partnership, now another 84 academic articles from the museum journal Anais do Museu Paulista on History and Material Culture are available on Wikimedia Commons and on Wikidata. The articles were published in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

GLAM digital with the August Bebel Institute - "Wiki Loves Democracy Part III" and new GLAM-on-Tour-Film released
Wiki Loves Democracy III - A virtual exchange with the August Bebel Institute
One of the strengths of de.wikipedia is that articles on parliamentarianism, the history of the labour movement in Germany, the free democratic basic order, the resistance to National Socialism and the concept of democracy are well developed thanks to all the authors. At the same time, we all realise that Wikipedia will never be complete. This GLAM digital event in June 2024 offered the opportunity to discuss the history of the Institute of Civic Education in more detail at a virtual event with Reinhard Wenzel, Managing Director and Director of Studies at the August Bebel Institute in Berlin.
The event also offered the opportunity to get some inspiration for the content and editing of thematic Wikipedia articles and to discuss further cooperation.
More about the event here.
More informations about the event format "GLAM digital" you can find here and here.
New GLAM-on-Tour film released
The film was made on the occasion of the GLAM on Tour event in Potsdam 2023 about the great commitment of the volunteers of the Wikimedia projects and the resulting wonderful cooperation with cultural and memory institutions can now be viewed. The GLAM-on-Tour-Films are a great way to spread the word about the openGLAM idea and to promote collaboration and further open up more GLAM-Institutions to the Wikimedia-Projects in order to create even more free knowledge.
2024 Half-a-year in Review
After a year of absence in reporting GLAM Indonesia activities, we are happy to share our 2024 half a year in review. Here they are:
Celebration of Indonesian Public Domain Day 2024
This January, Wikimedia Indonesia and the Goethe-Institut Jakarta collaborated to celebrate Indonesian Public Domain Day 2024 with a series of discussions on “Copyright and Artificial Intelligence.”
These discussions brought various advancements and improvements offered by AI tools that will be utilized in assisting human work, including for GLAM institutions, to the fore. On the other hand, unclear legal regulations and policies pose a challenge to using AI in Indonesia. As users, we should be ethically aware and responsible, especially when creating works incorporating data or works from other sources. We would also need to reconsider who would benefit the most and who would not from the usage of AI tools, as well as how to make its usage more sustainable and equitable.
Read our full report here.
Wikisource Competitions in Indonesian and Javanese language
We held two Wikisource competitions (edit-a-thons/proofreading contests) in the languages of Indonesia: Indonesian Wikisource, and Javanese Wikisource both in March 2024.
Within two weeks, the Javanese Wikisource Competition transcribed and proofread 20 Javanese books with Latin letters and 13 books in Javanese script with a total of 3,376 pages.
The Indonesian language Wikisource competition has way more gigantic statistics because it was participated not only by Javanese speakers but also by Indonesian speakers nationwide. By the end of the competition, 69 old Indonesian language books were successfully proofread with a total of 14,020 pages.
GLAM-Wiki Month 2024
Celebrating International Museum Day in May, we present GLAM-Wiki Month or Bulan Wiki GLAM. This is our initial activity dedicated to enriching GLAM Indonesia content on the Wikimedia projects for a month. It is going to be our annual thematic activity for the following years. Following the ICOM International Museum Day, we focused on organizing events on Museums for Education and Research.
We held a series of events such as GLAM Talks, #1Lib1Ref Campaign, GLAM Challenge on Wikipedia, and Datathon during May 2024.
GLAM Talks
We discuss the role and contribution of museums in the realm of research and education which has become the main role for the museum itself. However, in practice, this role is still less felt, especially in museums in Indonesia. In some cases, museums are also lacking in communicating the information and knowledge stored by these institutions to the wider public. Information about museum collections seems to stop in the museum buildings themselves.
#1Lib1Ref campaign
The #1Lib1Ref campaign invites librarians, researchers, book lovers, contributors to Wikimedia projects, and knowledge lovers to add references to articles on Wikipedia related to GLAM institutions.
GLAM Challenge on Wikipedia
The GLAM Challenge on Wikipedia was an edit-a-thon that challenged participants to write articles on museums in Indonesia. Over 14 days, 19 participants have taken part in the GLAM Challenge on Wikipedia 2024. A total of 203 articles have been submitted via a tool named Fountain.
Here is the list of participants and their submitted articles.
Datathon
Datathon is an edit-a-thon on Wikidata on a certain topic. In this GLAM Wiki Month, participants were challenged to edit the data of museum in Indonesia
Open science conference and Wikimedians in Sicily
Open Access in Scientific Research
The conference "Authors' Rights and Open Access in Scientific Research" was held in Rome and online on Monday, June 17. The event aimed to present the "Right2Pub – Balancing Publication Rights" project and its achieved results.
Open science, publication standards, and the sharing of scientific research data and results are increasingly relevant topics, raising important questions about the relationship between the free sharing of knowledge and copyright. As the organizers explained:
"Awareness and proper management of authors' rights are crucial for the progress of research and the protection of the interests of the scientific community. There is a clear need to promote regulatory changes at the national level to recognize and support the right of secondary publication in the scientific field (secondary publication right) and the retention of rights by the author."
The conference was organized by the Institute of Legal Informatics and Judicial Systems of the National Research Council (CNR) with the "Dario Nobili" Library of the CNR Research Area in Bologna, the Library and Scientific Documentation Center of the CNR Research Area in Pisa, the Italian Chapter of Creative Commons, and the National Coordination of Knowledge Rights 21.
Wikimedians in Sicily
June was hot in Sicily, and not just because of the temperatures! During this month, several events took place on the island to bring together users of Wikimedia projects and other collaborative projects, in Catania and Palermo. Following the Wiki Takes Catania event organized in September 2023 and the hackathon in April 2024, Sicilian Wikimedians are determined to develop projects in the region after a few years of inactivity and to collaborate with like-minded groups already present in the area.
We started in Palermo with a meeting that brought together Wikimedians, members of the free software promotion association in Palermo, Free Circle, and OpenStreetMap (OSM) users. We began with a series of presentations: how Wikipedia and other projects work, collaborative mapping with OSM, the Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Monuments contribution campaigns, and the StreetComplete app to easily add useful information to OSM. This was followed by very interesting discussions on the concept of civic hacking, the idea of grassroots efforts to improve public information and services, and how to engage the public with open-licensed tools.
This meeting was also an opportunity to discover the social coworking space neu[nòi], which hosted the event and regularly organizes educational meetings. Manfredi, a Palermo native passionate about open source, told us after the event: "It was a breath of fresh open source air, which really rekindles the desire to push forward many projects."
A few days later, the second Wikidata workshop was held at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Catania, conducted together with Sannita. The first session in April was an opportunity to present an overview of how the project works and how Wikidata's data is organized. This time, we went deeper with the participants, students and others, who created accounts and made their first edits on Wikidata.
Although the workshop was held at the invitation of a computer science professor, we demonstrated that Wikidata is not just a technical project for developers. In fact, Giuseppe, a literature student dedicating his thesis to Cesare Pavese's novel "The Moon and the Bonfires," discovered Wikidata on this occasion. Together, we discussed how to describe the relationship between a fictional character and a real person on Wikidata.
"Wikidata was a revelation: knowing that others before me had contributed to modelling the relationships between characters and places, between fiction and reality, gave me a foundation to start my work and encouraged me to contribute my knowledge to expand this domain of knowledge," Giuseppe enthusiastically told us.
These meetings are very important for activating the community in a place because, thanks to precise communication about Wikimedia projects (meeting pages, the list of users in a specific region), we were able to reach people who have been participating in the projects for a long time but had never attended an in-person event. As one of these users told us: "I discovered a whole new world, I am very happy to have met you!"
Wiki Loves Earth in Albania & Kosovo, 2024
Wiki Loves Earth Campaign in Albania and Kosovo 2024
The Wiki Loves Earth campaign 2024 was successfully organized in Albania and Kosovo from May 15th to June 15th, 2024. This year, the Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group participated, contributing significantly to the campaign's goals to capture the beauty of nature reserves, landscape conservation areas, national parks, and scenic areas.
Throughout the month-long event, Albania and Kosovo participants documented and shared their countries’ natural beauty. A total of 349 photos were uploaded.
Such contributions to Wikimedia Commons play a role in enriching Wikimedia projects and in raising awareness about the importance of natural heritage conservation.
Stay tuned for more updates, and we will soon announce the winners from Albania and Kosovo.
You can see some statistics and the winners shortly here.

WikiProject Te Papa Research Expeditions and WikiProject IBC 2024
Staff edit-a-thon: On the 4th of June a Te Papa staff research expeditions edition was held at the National Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. This gave Te Papa staff the opportunity to learn to edit Wikipedia articles relating to research expeditions including enriching articles on Te Papa related expeditions and their participants, locations, the vessels used, the species collected, and the publications generated as a result of those expeditions. The dashboard for this event can be found here.
SPNHC TDWG 2024: Ambrosia10 and Avocadobabygirl had their abstract on the Wikidata WikiProject Te Papa Research Expeditions accepted for this conference. Ambrosia10 has obtained funding from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand to attend and will present this paper in person. She has also received and accepted an invitation from the conference organisers to present at a session attended by all attendees of the conference. This has required Ambrosia10 and Avocardobabygirl to submit an extended abstract for publication in the conference journal.
The start of the International Botanical Congress is rapidly approaching and the participants of this WikiProject have recently completed authoring a conference poster. As we are all Wikimedians the decision was made to add the conference poster to WikiCommons to assist with our outreach efforts for the workshops being planned.
An online onboarding Wikidata workshop has been organised and opened to the general public. It will be held on Tuesday 9th of July at 9pm NZST (GMT+12) (i.e. 2am California, 5am New York, 10 am UK & Portugal, 11 am central Europe, 5pm Singapore, 7pm Sydney, 9pm NZ). Register here: https://tepapa.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUpf--orz8vEt0osKr1N2A6sXm4zyyXlGxe. As at writing over 50 people from over 17 countries have signed up to attend in this event virtually.
Registration has also recently opened for the in person Wikidata workshop taking place at the International Botanical Congress conference on Sunday the 21st of July. Organisers of the WikiProject are in the midst of creating a slide deck for the workshop but have already published both in English and Spanish "how to" documents to assist new Wikidata editors. The English version can be found here and the Spanish version here.
Aotearoa Wikipedian at Large
In the Public Relations Association of New Zealand 2024 awards, the West Coast Wikipedian at Large project won a Gold award. This project, conducted by User:Giantflightlessbirds with the support of Development West Coast, was an attempt to improve the Wikipedia and Commons coverage of significant tourist areas on the remote West Coast of the South Island, with the hope this would increase their visibility for visitors. It was prompted by the study "Wikipedia Matters" by Hinnosaar et al., which demonstrated small improvements in Wikipedia articles of tourist spots led to measurable increases in accommodation nights. Development West Coast in 2020, 2022, and 2023 sponsored a Wikipedian for four to eight weeks who coordinated a team of volunteers, mostly remote, and made trips up and down the Coast to take photos and organise release of photo collections into Commons. The project won a Gold award for "Most Innovative Campaign" and a Silver for "Best Use of Digital and Social Media". Other tourist organisations have since approached Giantflightlessbirds asking about replicating this approach in other areas.
Work continued on the Aotearoa Wikipedian at Large project in Christchurch, with an edit-a-thon in the Christchurch Art Gallery on May 18th focussed on the 2023 exhibition "Ink on Paper", aiming to put the participating artists and every exhibited artwork into Wikidata and (where copyright permitted) Commons, linking them all together—possibly a first in the modelling of an art gallery exhibition on multiple Wikimedia platforms. The Christchurch Art Gallery had been experimenting with open data, making the book about the exhibition available as a free PDF, and the complete list of works available for download – a first for them. The Wikipedian at Large gave a presentation on the project to the entire staff of the gallery, to a favourable reception and questions about what other exhibitions could be amenable to this treatment.
The Wikipedian at Large also ran two workshops for staff of the Christchurch Libraries system and other Christchurch City Council staff: one on Wikimedia platforms in general, and the other a hands-on exploration of Wikidata including how it could be used to develop an organisational Wikimedia strategy. Further Wikidata workshops are planned, as well as online public Wikipedia training, and a 24 hour edit-a-thon in early August covering Christchurch city architecture. The monthly meetups of Christchurch Wikipedians are continuing at Tūranga Central Library cafe.
Climate Changes Edit-a-thons by Wikimedia MKD
Climate Changes Edit-a-thon
Wikimedia MKD and the Macedonian Ecological Society (MES) continue their well-established productive collaboration on various different topics related to our environment. This time, Wikimedia MKD in collaboration with the MES organizations planned and successfully organized edit-a-thon of climate changes. This is one of several GLAM project events this year where the focus are the climate changes. Having in mind the fact that Wikimedia MKD dedicated its GLAM programme on climate changes, this edit-a-thon and the lecture that preceded it was a very good chance to give our contribution to this worldwide problem.
The event took place on 30 May 2024 at the premises of the Museum of Macedonian Struggle in Skopje. The edit-a-thon started at 12:00 local time and it was organized with students of Josip Broz Tito High School in Skopje. The total number of students that took part in was 10 led by the coordinator Irena Trajkovska Sterjoska.
The event was opened by the MES Project Coordinator Frosina Panduroska Dramikjanin. Her one-hour lecture was focused on the history of the climate changes initiative, the organizations that fight climate changes as well as methods, actions and initiatives that may be undertaken in order to rise people's awareness of this problem and give our contribution to the fight against the climate changes problems. The lecture itself was followed by a debate between the participants of the event, which was a detailed analysis of the problem through the students' thinking and view of the world.
The second part of this event was actual editing on Wikipedia in Macedonian. The students and the participants of the event edited, created and/ or translated articles in Macedonian. The topic of editing was 'Climate Changes' and the students were free to pick whatever climate changes article they want to work on. The total number of newly-created articles during this event was 13.

Climate Changes Workshop in Ohrid
Since this year’s GLAM programme and activities are topic-oriented, that is writing, contributing, acting and promoting the ‘Climate and Climate Changes’, Wikimedia MKD continues organizing topic-oriented GLAM events and activities. This topic is very important today in Macedonia and in the world and our Macedonian community on Wikipedia is giving its own contribution to this cause.
On 26th June 2024 the members of Wiki club Ohrid organized a workshop on this subject. The workshop started at 9:00 am at ‘Pirustija Nedanovski’ in the village of Ramne, Ohrid. The workshop was opened by Natasha Nedanoska who talked about this important subject, the climate changes and how to make contributions and decrease the consequences and the negative impact of the climate changes. After the lecture, members of Wiki club Ohrid wrote articles on this subject on the Macedonian Wikipedia.
The workshop ended at 12:00 pm. The participants wrote 5 articles on the spot, but the members of Wiki club also continued editing and contributing from home.
Wikimedia MKD continues with the workshops from the GLAM program in the future and we hope that we are going to raise awareness on this subject and make more articles about climate changes on Wikipedia.

Summary of Internships from the National Center for Culture
For over a year, the GLAM-Wiki in Wikimedia Poland has been supported by interns as part of the "Practice in Culture" program by the National Center for Culture. In the four editions of the NCK program, a total of 8 people have interned in culture. Agata Stadnicka, who was one of the first interns in Open Culture, has been a Wikipedian in Residence at National Museum in Krakow since March this year. Collectively, the interns have completed over 2,500 hours of internships in over a year.
As part of their tasks, they collaborated with the Open Culture Manager, Wikipedians in Residence, and partner cultural institutions, engaging in editing Wikimedia projects, such as creating Wikipedia articles and entering metadata into Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata, for example, in the WikiMatejko editing action. They cooperated in developing educational and promotional materials, as well as developing the new GLAM-Wiki website. They helped develop a comprehensive GLAM-Wiki project evaluation system and create evaluation surveys. Additionally, they provided administrative support, including preparing various reports and analyses, and supported the Open Culture Manager in ongoing tasks.
Kamila Neuman: I am very pleased that for over a year I have had the opportunity to work with young people, developing the area of GLAM-Wiki activities. These are incredibly valuable individuals who bring their perspective to my work and are eager to take on new challenges. I am very grateful to all of them for their contribution and dedication to the development of GLAM-Wiki collaborations; without them, many projects would not have their current shape or would not have been realized at all. This has been a very valuable time for me, full of many hours of joint conversations and online meetings. I wish them all success in their career plans and hope that thanks to their internships at Wikimedia Poland, they will actively promote and support open culture
Thanks to all the interns: Agata Stadnicka, Zuzanna Ligor, Sebastian Pierścieniak, Veronika Sabara, Agata Zdunek, Hanna Rzepka, Łukasz Cegliński.
Wikipedians in residence meetup
The second online meeting of Wikipedians in Residence this year took place on June 19. The participants included: Wojtek Szczęsny, Wikipedian in Residence at the National Library in Warsaw, Grzegorz Gogacz, Wikipedian in Residence at the Warsaw Public Library; Agata Stadnicka, Wikipedian in Residence at the National Museum in Krakow; Kamila Neuman, Open Culture Manager at Wikimedia Poland and Łukasz Cegliński, intern in Open Culture at WMPL.
The meetings with Wikipedians in Residence are a space for exchanging knowledge and experiences, as well as establishing common standards of operation within Wikiresidencies. During the June meeting, we analyzed and discussed ways to measure the effects of Wikiresidencies and the tools used for this purpose. The aim of our discussions was to streamline the methodology of data collection and the tools used, as well as to identify necessary functionalities that would help measure specific effects more easily and automatically.
We also talked about ways to present the effects of GLAM-Wiki collaborations, particularly in the context of working on the new GLAM-Wiki website.
10th European GLAM-Wiki coordinators meetup
In June, the tenth meeting of European GLAM-Wiki coordinators took place. Thirteen people participated. During the meeting, Susanna Anas from AvoinGLAM presented a summary of the AI Sauna event, which took place in Finland on May 6-7, 2024. More about the event on the meta page and in the presentation.
Wikipedian in residence at the Queen Sofia National Museum Art Centerin Madrid, Carolina Espinoza Cartes, presented her activities from the last two years. She talked about the Hablando en data data visualization project carried out by the Museum's Library and the University of Salamanca, which aims to connect and gather available information about these creators in other databases and share the results through the website. More about the project on the Museum's website.
A guest at the meeting was also Brigitte Vezina, Director of Policy and Open Culture at Creative Commons, who spoke about TAROC (Towards a Recommendation on Open Culture) - a community initiative led by Creative Commons aimed at supporting the international community in developing a positive, affirmative, and influential international normative instrument (recommendation) that promotes values, goals, and mechanisms conducive to the development of open culture. Brigitte asked the participants to share stories that confirm that open culture brings real benefits and impacts our environment.
Link to Creative Commons publication on the benefits of Open Culture.
The meeting also addressed the topic of the GLAM Global Meetup, which will take place on the preconference day of Wikimania in Katowice.
Online meetings of European GLAM-Wiki coordinators were initiated after the coordinators' meeting in Prague in September 2022, organized by Liam Wyatt as part of a series of live meetings. Their goal is the ongoing exchange of knowledge and experiences, as well as building a supportive network for coordinators working in the GLAM-Wiki area. So far, a total of ten online meetings have taken place. The team initiating and organizing these online meetings and events includes Kamila Neuman from Wikimedia Poland, Michelle van Lanschot from Wikimedia Netherlands, and Giovanna Fontenelle from the Wikimedia Foundation.
News in GLAM Serbia
The first half of 2024 has been a period of significant activity and achievement for Wikimedia Serbia's GLAM activities. Our efforts have been focused on expanding collaborations, enhancing existing partnerships, and actively participating in global campaigns to improve the quality and quantity of free knowledge available. This will provide an overview of the key activities and accomplishments from January to June 2024, highlighting our ongoing commitment to fostering a rich cultural and educational ecosystem.
#1Lib1Ref Campaign
In collaboration with the University Library "Svetozar Marković" and the Wikimedia Community of the Republic of Srpska, Wikimedia Serbia participated in the global #1Lib1Ref campaign. The campaign began on January 15th and ran until February 5th. In January, nearly 12,000 references were added to 3,645 articles on Serbian Wikipedia. In cooperation with the Wikimedia Foundation, a workshop for global #1Lib1Ref campaign coordinators was held. Wikimedia Serbia is one of the global coordinators of this campaign, as well as the coordinator for Central and Eastern Europe. A blog post about the #1Lib1Ref campaign was published on the Diff platform, analyzing the results of the January campaign, future plans, and outcomes from the open meeting with local campaign coordinators.
Collaborations and Partnerships
A lot of efforts were made to establish new collaborations and renew existing ones by contacting cultural institutions and organizing meetings to increase the visibility of Wikimedia projects and Wikimedia Serbia within these institutions.
A memorandum of cooperation was signed with the Little Theatre "Duško Radović" and preparations were made for the Wikipedian in Residence project. The project will start in early May and last for three months, focusing on releasing photos from over 60 years of the Theatre's existence and writing articles. A memorandum of cooperation was also signed with the Organization for Creative Gathering "OKO," working on finding the best model of cooperation.
Ministry of Culture of Republic of Serbia
The Wikipedian in Residence project received support from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia as part of the competition for financing or co-financing projects in the field of protection and digitization of cultural heritage in Serbia for 2024.
Wikipedian in Residence
As part of the Wikipedian in Residence project in collaboration with the Little Theatre "Duško Radović", the first two months have given significant results. A total of 54 articles have been written, 15 articles have been improved, and 12 articles have been illustrated. Additionally, 481 files have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, including four monographs. Due to the success and ongoing potential of the project, the project has been extended for an additional month.
The Little Theatre "Duško Radović" is a renowned institution with over 60 years of history, dedicated to producing high-quality theatrical performances for children and young audiences. By digitizing and sharing its rich archives, this project plays a crucial role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage. The release of photographs, monographs, and detailed articles not only increases the visibility of the Theatre's significant contributions but also makes this valuable cultural content accessible to a global audience. This project highlights the importance of digitalization in preserving cultural heritage, ensuring that the Theatre's legacy is maintained for future generations and that its impact is recognized and appreciated worldwide.
Wikidata Competition for International Museum Day
In celebration of International Museum Day, Wikimedia Serbia organized a competition on Wikidata as part of a global initiative to enhance content across Wikimedia projects. The competition ran from May 18th to 26th 2024, aiming to increase the availability and quality of data related to museums worldwide.
During the competition, participants made nearly four thousand edits to 465 items, demonstrating a strong commitment to improving and expanding Wikidata for museums. In addition to these edits, 8 new items were created, further enriching the repository of information available on Wikidata.
This competition not only contributed to the global effort to support museums by making their information more accessible but also engaged the community in a collaborative effort to document and preserve cultural heritage. By improving the data on museums, the initiative helps in promoting cultural institutions and ensuring that valuable information about their collections and history is available to a wider audience.
Summary
The first half of 2024 has been highly productive for Wikimedia Serbia's GLAM. Participation in global campaigns like #1Lib1Ref has improved reference quality on Serbian Wikipedia and fostered international collaboration. Successful partnerships, particularly the Wikipedian in Residence project at the Little Theatre "Duško Radović," have significantly contributed to the preservation and digitalization of cultural heritage. The Wikidata competition for International Museum Day further highlighted our commitment to enriching global knowledge about museums. As we move forward, we remain dedicated to expanding our collaborations and enhancing our GLAM projects to make free knowledge accessible to all.

Swiss GLAM Programme
International Archive Week
The International Archive Week was running from 3rd to 9th of June. This year the theme was Cyber archives. We had a panel discussion on the subject talking about new curatorial approaches and how the wiki platforms can help to include marginalised knowledge in archives. The video shows some thoughts and approaches for curatorial work regarding digital gaps in archives.
Studio Art Clinic (in German: Atelier Kunstklinik)
Nusa Núñez de La Torre presented her work in Biel/Bienne on the June GLAM Meeting at the KBCB. As an artist and therapist she founded the nomadic project Kunstklinik where she focusses on ways of healing and perception of the inner self. In a series of work her home bathroom was used to escape everyday life and to reflect the ocean. People could sit on a ship, listen to the running water and watch videos that made them feel being on a ship in the ocean. Working with dreams to discover oneself a phoneline was created where people can call and get help understanding their dreams. Using architectural objects in public space integrating a screen gives access for people living there for free.
GLAM-on-Tour at the Swiss National Library
The GLAM-on-Tour at the Swiss National Library took place the last weekend of June. The aim was to look inside the library regarding decolonisation in archives and collections and transatlantic perceptions. An interesting perception of the Peruvian Andes is to perceive them as mountains of 5th Switzerland. Dealing with the same issues regarding global warming leads to joint working groups of experts. Participants came from German- and Frenchspeaking Switzerland as well as from Germany. The age was mixed from beginning Twenties to late Seventies. The work developed ranged from biographies, decolonizing topics to audio files as on the right side. The National Library is a constant partner of Wikimedia CH. Further projects are planned.
Using Wikipedia in interfaith education
Khalili Foundation
The main activity this month has been the Interfaith Explorers improvement project, so there has been slower progress on other fronts. Interfaith Explorers is a site created by the Khalili Foundation to support primary and secondary religious education, so far covering the Abrahamic religions. We are adding in introductory text, mainly from Simple English Wikipedia, to introduce concepts and make the site more useful to learners. I have been extracting text from Wikipedia articles, simplifying it, and building up a list of glosses of central topics, along with the attribution statements that allow us to reuse the text. These have been reviewed by experts who have identified issues including problematic oversimplifications, high reading level, and Christianity-as-default. They have also provided a list of topics that the site ought to cover. Informed by this feedback, I have been adapting more succinct text from Simple English Wikipedia, mindful that some topics need extended explanations. I have liaised with the Interfaith Explorers site designers about how the design can represent non-Abrahamic religions, and how we can incorporate attribution statements so that we comply with Creative Commons licences.
Some wiki-related work that is lower-priority but continuing:
- Good Article review of Heaven on Earth: Art from Islamic Lands: The reviewer has suggested a lot of improvements to the article. I've made the smaller changes straight away; the larger changes will take more time and the review itself might need to be postponed until I have time for it.
- Preparing an article on the Samurai Shokai company: I have continued to expand the draft, which is getting nearer to being ready to be published as an article.
- Editathons: I'm still hoping to do an event in Bristol and I am going to follow up with my contact at University of Edinburgh about doing a student editathon.
- Conferences: I have registered for Wikimania (Katowice, Poland in August), where I have my own talk about working across languages and am due to appear on a Wikimedian In Residence panel and in a GLAM workshop. The main point of being visible in this conference is to enthuse a wide audience of Wikipedians with the Foundation's forthcoming work with UNESCO. This month I also put in a talk proposal for the Museums + Tech conference in December about how the Khalili Foundation engages Wikipedia volunteers. I will learn whether that was accepted in mid-August.
- Publicity and social media: Wikimedia UK recently got a new Head of Communications. We've met online and also exchanged emails about how Wikimedia UK can continue to support this partnership with co-ordinated social media publicity.
Wikimedia UK hosted "Let's culturally diversify the Internet", a blog post that I edited from a talk I gave in February.
I had an online meeting with some of the Wikimedians of the United Arab Emirates user group. They are organising a year-long competition in which they translate text into Arabic related to a collection, and they have selected the Khalili Islamic collections. I have given them lists of Wikidata items, Wikimedia Commons file descriptions, and Wikipedia articles that they could translate.
There were five new image uploads, of textile artworks from Meiji-era Japan.
I dedicated some time earlier in the month to fix a problem with the Indonesian article on Sitaras. There were lots of errors, broken links, and code that wasn't being properly rendered, including the image gallery. I tried to fix the code directly, but a vandalism detector rejected my edits. I worked with a volunteer via Indonesian Wikipedia's Embassy to identify the problems and get them fixed. I fixed similar (but less drastic) code problems with the Igbo article about Muhammad Sadiq and a couple of other translations. I also fixed an issue affected all the Khalili Collections articles on English Wikipedia. A link to a page on the Khalili Collections website had been marked as dead (it had moved, not disappeared), so I made sure each article now has an active, correct link.
There is one new translation this month: volunteer Nikson Alexander translated the Heaven on Earth: Art from Islamic Lands article into Russian, which is apt since that exhibition was a joint venture between the Khalili Collections and the Hermitage Museum. This brings the number of languages in which we have created new articles to thirteen. GLAMorgan reports 4,678,031 image views in June; fewer than last month, but there is always a drop over the summer.
Empire of the Sultans has been scheduled as Today's Featured Article for English Wikipedia on Tuesday 23rd July, for 24 hours from 1am UK time.
GLAM CSI user stories feedback requested and US events
GLAM CSI user stories
The first results of the GLAM CSI project are ready for review by the Wikimedia community. As previously described (March, April), the GLAM CSI – Contributor Study Initiative is a 2024 project to assess the contribution pipeline in the Wikimedia technical infrastructure for supporting cultural and heritage partnerships and projects led by Andrew Lih and the Smithsonian Institution in the United States. The goal is to produce real-life user stories to provide a common base of understanding around the dynamics of GLAM wiki work.
Feedback was gathered from an online survey of more than 50 constituents and GLAM organizations, as well as interviews with GLAM wiki community members in the GLAM Wiki Global Telegram group and the recent meta:Wikimedia Hackathon.
For June 2024, a set of three detailed user stories has been created for public comment, which can be done directly on the associated talk pages. We invite feedback and input on the following scenarios that capture a variety of GLAM wiki needs:
- meta:GLAM_CSI/User story – Image reconciliation uploader – Captures the issues of image uploading and reconciliation, focusing on the needs of more complex Commons-based uploading and enrichment of structured data.
- meta:GLAM CSI/User story – Women scientists reconciliation – Focuses on Wikidata work and managing worklists and reconciliation using tools such as OpenRefine or other toolkits.
- meta:GLAM CSI/User story – Wiki Loves – Describes the workflow and needs of Wiki Loves Monuments managers in working with photo uploaders and new contributors, while running the world’s largest photo contest.
User stories related to WikiBase and mass data synchronization are currently in draft form and will be published shortly.
The latest status of the GLAM CSI project will be presented at Wikimania, with the session conducted in person and hybrid format online.
For more information, please visit the main project page at meta:GLAM CSI, where you can sign up to be informed of progress and leave feedback.

BHL-Wiki Working Group June monthly highlights
Chairpersons proposed presentation at Wikimania
Although the chairperson’s abstract on the BHL-Wiki working group was not selected for Wikimania 2024 information on the BHL-Wiki working group may still be presented at the pre conference GLAM meeting likely to be held at Katowice on the 6th of August.
Wikimedian in Residence
Progress is continuing to be made confirming the Wikimedian in Residence scope of work document as well as the work needed to be completed before undertaking the Wikimedian in Residence solicitation.
Type specimen data model and Biodiversity topic matrix
The BHL-Wiki working group agreed that separate meetings were needed to help progress Type Specimen data model best practice documentation. The BHL-Wiki working group are also keen on creating a topic matrix for biodiversity similar to that currently in existence for the topic of women’s health. It is likely separate meetings will also be needed to progress this.
A meeting was held with staff from the Flickr Foundation to help guide them on the proposed draft data model for BHL images in WikiCommons. The aim was to assist with development of the Flickypedia tool and to support it providing appropriate structured data on commons for uploads of BHL Flickr images into WikiCommons.
Next meeting
The next meeting of the BHL-Wiki working group will be held on at 11am PST on Monday the 15th of July. More information and the link to this zoom meeting can be found on the agenda document.
Bridging Digital Art Practices with Institutional Archives: professional knowledge exchange on digital art archiving
AvoinGLAM (Finland) & LI-MA (Amsterdam) are organizing an expert meeting in October (16-17.10.2024) in Amsterdam, focused around the following question:
How can artists, curators, cultural producers with smaller cultural organizations connect to larger ecosystems of open heritage knowledge?
Digital art communities, festivals, and individual artists provide alternative practices for engaging with digital cultural heritage and commons initiatives. These examples illustrate effective practices in data modeling, metadata management, and database systems usage. However, connecting these practices to larger ecosystems of institutional (museum) archives, often raises significant challenges due to the centering of artists and artworks, rather than events and temporary communities of practice.
Open ecosystems, such as the Wikimedia projects, are renowned for high-quality reference and introductory materials. Despite this, emerging cultural practices frequently encounter obstacles within these environments particularly when inserting or connecting alternative methods to standardized systems. This expert meeting aims to address these issues by focusing on the role of linked open data in cultural production and the preparation of metadata for integration into larger archival systems.
Media Art History in Finland
In advance of the expert meeting on 17th October, the ambition is to make a public presentation will highlight the Media Art History in Finland (MEHI) project and its integration into open ecosystems, focusing on metadata, MediaWiki, and Wikidata. This presentation is part of the 2024 AvoinGLAM commemoration of the work of Minna Tarkka (1960–2023). The MEHI project is a significant effort by Finnish arts organizations over the past three years. MEHI aims to document and publish the history of Finnish media art and build robust information infrastructures for its documentation using Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons for open sharing. A key objective is to ensure the continued growth of media art knowledge on Wikidata by encouraging contributions from artists and cultural organizations. This work has already began here Media Art History.
