Bringing the GLAM to Wikimania
ByEvery year hundreds of Wikipedians and free culture community members come together for the annual conference, Wikimania. 2011's Wikimania was held in Haifa, Israel, hosting 720 participants from 56 countries during August 4-7. GLAM-WIKI participants from around the world attended, coming together to share their projects and ideas with their colleagues. The conference featured three days full of presentations, based around multiple tracks, one of those tracks being "Wiki Culture and the Community," which allowed for the development of two "GLAMorous" sessions and other sessions involving GLAM related projects. Various other events took place as well, as part of the conference and after hours.
Presentations
Thursday, August 4, included the first of two GLAMorous sessions. The opening session featured four presentations examining the "state" of GLAM in Washington DC and the Netherlands, the partnership between Wikipedia and the Palace of Versailles, and what the future may hold for GLAM WIKI:
- The State of GLAM: DC: Aude, President of the Wiki Society of DC, opened up the session with the current status of GLAM events in Washington, DC. Aude touched on the exciting developments that have taken place since the steamroller known as GLAM had moved into the United State's most famous city for cultural organizations. Projects she discussed included GLAM partnerships with the National Archives and Records Administration and the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, the FedFlix project, OpenStreetMap events, the upcoming Wikipedia Takes Baltimore and other future opportunities.
- State of GLAM in the Netherlands: Multichill, of Wikimedia Netherlands, presented on projects taking place in the Netherlands. He shared success stories from partnerships with the Tropenmuseum, which donated 45,000 pieces of media to Wikimedia Commons, film contributions from Open Images, over 1,000 politics-related images from the Nationaal Archief, partnerships with the Amsterdam Museum, Museum Boerhaave, the Wiki Loves Bieb project, and finally content from RCE which provided the groundwork for Wiki Loves Monuments, an event that Multichill is an organizer of. Multichill closed with the hope that GLAM relationships in the Netherlands can move beyond content donations, that they can develop deliverable metrics for review and a free licenses standard, and more. You can view his presentation here.
- Palace of Versailles and Wikimedia Projects : Feedback on the Experience: Benoît Evellin presented a round-up of his experience at Wikipedian-in-Residence at the Château de Versailles. A six month residency, Evellin shared successes such as the Backstage Pass tour, the 24 Hours for an Article event, which created multi-language articles related to the Chateau with Wikimedians around the world in 24 hours, and hundreds of images donated to Commons from the Chateau. As Evellin's residency came to a close after Wikimania, he stressed the importance of long term relationships and that more time could have been had in order to produce more outcomes.
