Libraries in Wikidata White Paper

The American Association of Research Libraries published a White Paper describing the opportunities for libraries, especially research and university libraries, to participate in the Wikidata community. Following a process similar to the open-consultation and feedback cycles we used for the Wikipedia opportunities papers in 2016/17, the White Paper was written by a committee assembled by ARL and including Wikimedians and librarians working on Wikidata, but included a public consultation period that helped refine and clarify the paper.

The paper was written with decision makers within research libraries in mind: thus the recommendations and survey of topics, is designed to be accessible and to discuss the range of different recommendations and opportunities across the structured data in Wikimedia for libraries. The paper is also a very good tool for reading about the current "state of the field" for Wikidata in GLAM practice. Though the focus is on library needs, many of the examples, citations and other content are useful for any other kind of Wikidata partnership.

Special thanks to everyone on the steering committee for the paper, especially Smallison, who worked closely with the staff at ARL to pull together and advance the paper.

The Wikimedia URL Shortener is live and now included in the Wikidata Query Service to create short links to queries or direct results (announcement). This Month in GLAM has the short URL w.wiki/u4, this month's Wikidata report is w.wiki/3dH.
The ability to add structured depicts (P180) statements to file pages is live on Commons
Suggestions based on the one-of constraints are now enabled for all users
