Adding New South Wales stories to Wikipedia
ByState Library of New South Wales, one of the oldest libraries in Australia hosted Wikpedian-in-Residence Whiteghost.ink for 14 weeks as part of a state-wide editing project. Individual training and guidance for staff is one of the great benefits of having a Wikipedian in Residence. One of the priorities for the Library was training staff in editing and in particular helping them to understand how the Wikipedia ‘ecosystem’ works. This included understanding how to interact with other editors and how articles in the encyclopaedia are interrelated.
Some examples of the work completed with the WiR include:
- Talk pages – negotiating changes to articles via talk pages allowed staff to create a new article for Australian artist Harriet Morgan, separating some of the information that had been in the existing article on her sister Helena Scott who was also an artist.
- List articles – staff created lists of the newspapers published in New South Wales and the NSW newspapers published in languages other than English.
- Categories in Wikimedia Commons – the First Fleet is the name given to the eleven ships that brought the first convicts and settlers to Australia from Great Britain in 1788, establishing the colony of New South Wales. Learning about the categories that apply to images about the First Fleet is helping with planning for future editing activities. These include
