GLAM+Wikidata

Museum of printing

My regular museum visit helped a new opened museum in Yerevan to be part of GLAM project. The idea to have a prinitng museum in Armenia was born in 2012 when Yerevan was declared World Book Capital by Unesco on the occasion of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the printing of the first book in Armenian - Urbatagirq “The Friday Book” (1512, Venice). The museum displays the first Armenian printed Bible (1666, Amsterdam), the first Armenian printed map (1695, Amsterdam), the first printed Armenian periodical “Azdarar” (1794 - 1796, Madras).

The GLAM collaboration with this instituation started with wikicommons and later we will develop it into Wikipedia and Wikidata, as well as Wikisource.

GLAM+Wikidata

August 24-26 Summer Wikicamp-3 participants had a workshop on GLAM+wikidata. Initially they used wikidata for ineterlanguage connection and anything in infobox that is not in Armenia to translate in wikidata. At this workshop they had the chance to creat new wikidata items from the online catalog dataset of Martiros Saryan Museum. The editors were in love with wikidata and they continued to contribute to wikidata from above mentioned catalog after the camp.

Upcoming events: Wikidata Tour Down Under

Andy Mabbett visited Australia for three weeks in February 2016 (see: Wikidata Tour Down Under (2016)). He's here again in September/October 2018, and will be talking about Wikidata and WikiCite, as well as their sister projects, and how they impact GLAMs, and Open Science, as well as explaining how institutions can work with the community of volunteers who maintain those projects, to mutual benefit.

Collaboration between three Australian Wikipedia projects

On Friday 31 August 2018 the University of Melbourne UOMWiki community came together with La Trobe University's Shut up and Wiki, and Parlour's WikiD project as part of Researchers Week.

At lunchtime, the participants at the University of Melbourne event joined colleagues at La Trobe University via Zoom, for a virtual Shut up and Wiki session. This was great innovation, using the "Shut up and write" format of 25-minute focused sprints, a.k.a. pomodoros, with a short break in between. It brought editors together from both venues, really focussed our work and led to some silent fun online.

A badge-making station was kept busy creating Wikipedia and Australian Women's Register-themed badges.

Brazilian Wikimedians develop tools for mass contributions: Mbabel and Import-500px

In August, we held the ninth edition of Wikidata Lab at RIDC Neuromat, an event dedicated to technical training for the integration of Wikipedia and Wikidata.

We presented the Mbabel tool for creating structured drafts on Wikipedia that we developed in our research center by adapting and expanding the namesake template for works of art created by user:Pharos, from WikiProject Metropolitan Museum of Art. The development of the tool from our perspective was associated to the Museu Paulista Wiki-GLAM initiative.

We have worked with the concept of structured narratives as the development of verbal texts, understandable by humans, automated from predetermined arrangements that process data from structured databases. In this case, we are able to generate draft texts for articles automatically from predefined arrangements in the Mbabel templates that work with Wikidata support. We named the texts generated by Mbabel structured drafts, which are already available for use on this page.

Articles about works of art, for example, follow a similar narrative structure, since they need to present essential information such as who created it, what it depicts, where it is located, its height and width, its inventory number and which collection it belongs, for example. These information are stored in Wikidata as property values. In Mbabel's structured drafts, properties are variables that can be applied in a generic and editable textual structure that adapts according to the desired artwork, making the editing process easier for the user.

The purpose of the tool is to assist the user in the first steps of editing an article, providing a basic text and organization structure. The tool also aims to integrate Wikipedia and Wikidata, bringing possibilities of computational resources exploitation in the Wikimedia platforms. Thus, the drafts generated by Mbabel contain automatic phrases created according to the availability of information registered in Wikidata besides introduction, Wikidata infobox, references and sections suggestions. In the museum template, we also have added a Listeria containing up to 100 pieces exposed in the place, in order to complement the content of the entry.

The sentences structure is stored in a thematic template and changes according to the properties available in the corresponding item on Wikidata. The more information available in the Wikidata items, the more complete are the structured drafts generated by Mbabel. The tool is quite easy to use: it only requires the user to have the Wikidata qid of an item that doesn't have yet a Wikipedia entry and to select one of the six available templates on the page - works of art, museums, movies, books, newspapers and earthquakes. The user can also create other Mbabel templates for themes that cover a great amount of qids. Templates on newspapers and earthquakes were created by attendees of Wikidata Lab IX.

It is important to note that Mbabel was not created to replace human edition and that the structured draft should necessarily be improved by the user on his sandbox before being published as article in the main domain respecting the quality standards agreed by the community.

At last, it was exciting to develop the Mbabel tool and I would like to invite the Wikimedia Community to engage with it and experiment its possibilities.

Importing rescued photographs to Commons: Creating a tool to explore and import free images from 500px

In the final days of July we discussed the possible mass upload to Commons of photos with free licenses in the 500px website. The site has decided to no longer allow upload of Creative Commons photographs and the kind folks at the ArchiveTeam archived all the images over at the Internet Archive. Before deciding on a mass upload, we decided to question how many images and of what quality.

Contacted, the ArchiveTeam promptly provided a count of images by license and the metadata of those with compatible free licenses. With 231348 photographs, exploring and selecting them for import was not a simple task. Using Wikimedia Cloud Service's Toolforge we developed a website that allows Wikimedia users to explore and import the images into Commons.

With the diligent work of two users and input from several members of the Commons community we have already imported more than 50000 photographs into Commons. Including wonderful closeups of insects and flowers, as well as great city landscapes and various other themes.


Ceramics and monuments

This summer, the Musée Saint-Raymond, the archaeological museum of Toulouse, which has been a regular contributor to Wikidata for nearly two years, made a massive upload of images and metadata concerning its collection of Greek ceramics. Thanks to Alyx, student of the École des Chartes (Paris) on a 4-month internship, the inventory data of nearly 200 vases were extracted from the collections database, prepared and aligned with Wikidata using Dataiku and Open refine then loaded via Quickstatements. Since Greek ceramics was still poorly represented on Wikidata and without a stable model, the most relevant properties had to be sought to include as much data and as much precision as possible. This project was an opportunity for the conservation team to update and structure the data in its own database prior to import. At the end of it, the Wikidata elements were linked to the collection management database in order to enrich the records. We hope that this project will assist in the development of a stable descriptive model to cross-reference corpus preserved in various institutions around the world.

Wiki Loves Monuments

2018 will be the 8th edition of Wiki Loves Monuments in France. This year there is a big change in the competition, the perimeter of eligible monuments will be expanded. It is done by adding the cultural heritage inventory to the historic monuments. The number of monuments will quadruple, going from 45 000 to around 200 000 ! We hope to see an increase in participation and diversity too!

In August the roman history comes to life in the Archaeological Park Xanten (APX), when the volunteers of Wikimedia projects visited the area. The Archaeological Park is at the same time a centre of high-calibre research and a fun place to relax and play games. During the weekend of "Wikipedia trifft...die Colonia Ulpia Traiana" many new images have been created for the Wikimedia projects. On-site shooting was done with a drone and a 360 degree camera. Exciting tours through the APX and talks with the APX team rounded off the great event. Many articles could be revised or expanded. As part of the weekend, a small film was created by Ziko van Dijk In addition, here's also a report in the "Wikipedia:Kurier".

Heritage Week workshop NGI 2018

As part of Heritage Week 2018 and the European Year of Cultural Heritage, Wikimedia Community Ireland hosted a Wikipedia editing workshop in the National Gallery of Ireland on 21 August. Taking the theme of the European Year "Share a Story: Make a Connection" and titled "Stories and Connections", and focused on the people associated with the Gallery: artists, collectors, sitters, and previous staff such as directors. The event saw 6 editors using the resources of the Gallery library.


First WoALUG contribution to this newsletter

Photowalk held in Kosovo cities

On 18 & 19 August Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group (WoALUG) organized Wiki Photowalk 2018 in several Kosovo cities with young photographers, visiting Prishtina, Peja, Gjakova, Prizren, Gjilan and Ferizaj. The goal was to get 250 photographs uploaded, however, by the end of the photowalk there were 679. Photos capture details from city life and objects. Biggest contributor Fitore Syla was awarded a Polaroid camera. Photowalk in several cities in Albania is coming up in October.

WikiCity tour in Kočani and Vinica

On 19th of August, the first tour of the WikiCity project has been conducted in Kočani and Vinica, two close cities in the eastern part of Macedonia. Considering the main idea of this project to take photographs of the cities, their historical landmarks, important and notable buildings which are home of institutions as well as part of the cultural heritage, we came up with the idea to organize a joint tour with the bicycle crew "Milton Manaki" which regularly make tours visiting cultural and natural sites attended by cyclists who are also amateur and semi-professional photographers sharing a lot of decent quality images on the social media. On a bright sunny, although very hot day, dozen participants with four cars traveled to Kočani where the 50 kilometers long tour started firstly visiting the city of Kočani's landmarks including the municipal building, medieval (guard) tower, church of St. George, Monument of the Freedom with the well known mosaic, Center of Culture and old traditional houses in the historic city center finishing with the Railway station which is the last and easternmost train terminal in Macedonia built in the early thirties of XX century. The group then headed to the town of Vinica which is located only 10 kilometers south of Kočani. In Vinica after a several photo shoots of the new main square, municipal building, the new church, kindergarten, Center of Culture and Library, the group was welcomed by the director of the Museum of Vinica where they were given a tour in the Museum as well as on the archeological site of Viničko Kale (Vinica Fortress) on the hill at the outskirts of the town where the well known early Christian terracotta icons have been found. The tour continued through several villages on the foothills of Plačkovica mountain to the village of Morodvis where the archaeological site of the early Byzantine city of Morobizdon with the ruins of the important episcopal and basilica buildings are found. Riding through several other villages in the valley of Bregalica river on a beautiful landscape with plenty of rice fields with ripe rice ready to be harvested the tour ended up at the starting point in Kočani. Throughout the entire tour participants have been instructed about Wikipedia, uploading images on the Wikimedia Commons and also they were reading existing Wikipedia articles about the sites and places that had been visited. In the forthcoming period after they will upload all of the images they have taken on this Wikicity tour editing activities are planed for the images to be used.


World Library and Information Congress 2018 @ Kuala Lumpur Convention Center

On 26 August 2018, Wikimedia Malaysia, under the official name Wikimedia Community User Group Malaysia (WCUGM), participated for the very first time in a conference related to libraries – World Library and Information Congress 2018 (WLIC 2018) organized by the International Federation of Library Association and Institution (IFLA). The week-long conference (24-30 August 2018) and was held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Malaysia. As the most significant global librarian conference in the world, representatives from national libraries around the world were at in the event.

Users Dody Ismoyo and MYMMMC from Wikimedia Malaysia presented a general session about the state of Wikimedia, while Andrew Lih visiting from Wikimedia DC ran a Wikidata workshop. For WCUGM, this was considered their Kuala Lumpur Meetup 4, the 4th ever Wikipedia gathering in Malaysia's largest city. Surprisingly, we met with many fellow Wikipedians from around the globe who also attended the event, namely from Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Finland, Italy, Singapore, Spain and the United States.

At the end of each presentation session, we had networking sessions with the librarians and had serious discussions on how to follow up. For some of them, especially the ones based in Malaysia (as representatives from universities and national libraries), we exchanged our details and we wished to have future Wikipedia meetups with them.

Wikipedia Update: What's Going On, and How Can You Get Involved?

User Dody Ismoyo opened up the presentation with the general overview of WCUGM from the story of its inception, organizing committees, meetups held in the country and also abroad and with other Wikimedia chapters or user groups, its engagement with various institutions, milestones which have been achieved by the user group, social media of the user group which have been set up, current challenges faced by the user group in further expanding and engaging with more institutions in the country, and future plan to where this user group will head to.

User MYMMMC continued by discussing libraries engagement with Wikimedia movement and showed various statistical values obtained with regards to library-related matters. It was then followed by various ways institutions have engaged with the community and examples of Wikipedia events held with libraries around the globe.

During the questions and answers session, most of the discussion revolved around the ways to better engage libraries and librarians with Wikimedia movement domestically, regionally and globally. The biggest concerns voiced were how to find a contact person in the Wikimedia Foundation or how to do/start some particular projects, as Wikimedia Foundation projects are so vast and they did not really have the idea on how/where to start.

Wikidata and Libraries: An Introduction

As a late-breaking addition to the program, Andrew Lih (User:Fuzheado) offered to run a Wikidata workshop for IFLA-WLIC attendees during the early days of the conference. Despite it not being on the printed program and having last-minute publicity, we had 40-50 attendees for a lively and interactive workshop.

Lih started the presentation (Google Slides) with brief history of Wikidata, comparing its genesis with Wikimedia Commons. Various challenges were brought up in writing Wikipedia articles, namely on the standardization of information across different Wikimedia projects and different Wikimedia languages. Examples on library listings in the United States were used to show Wikidata Query and SPARQL.

During the questions and answers session, most of the discussion revolved around navigation of Wikidata, collaborations between libraries and Wikimedia movement using Wikidata, teaching of Wikipedia at universities.

The major or national libraries of Sweden, Finland, Singapore, United States, Malaysia and others were represented.

GLAMifying the National Library of Portugal

Workshop with the librarians, February 2018

Last year Wikimedia Portugal was contacted by the National Library of Portugal (BNP) to start a GLAM project with us. In February we've made a first event at the Library, a full-day series of workshops with the librarians covering Wikimedia projects integration, Wikidata & Commons in the context of a GLAM project and Wikipedia article editing and creation.

Since then we've been closely working with the BNP staff on the Unimarc/Wikidata mapping correlation, script development to import the data from their online open data service into Wikidata, testing all routines and spreadsheet generation for Pattypan. The objective is to develop an integrated tool that would provide maximum automatization, releasing the much valuable human workforce for content curatorship and content use in the projects.

We've just started uploading the first batch of data, and over the next months we plan on start steadily uploading about a million records and public domain images into Wikidata and Commons. The first content being imported is the BNP painting collection, including the library directors gallery, and valuable religious paintings from the 1834 extinguished monasteries which are part of the institution inventories since 1854. Next batches will include cartography, going back to the 15th century, public domain books and monographies. We also plan to import all the author's database into Wikidata, as well as other available correlated databases.

Integrating BNP staff into the Wikimedia projects is also one of our goals - which shouldn't be hard, considering all enthusiasm they've been showing while working with us. Over the lifetime of the project, we expect they would be developing a huge set of skills which would allow them to work on their own, and level up the project. We also plan to use this GLAM to practise and improve the Wikidata & Commons skills of the Portuguese Wikimedian community.


Launch of GLAM Newsletter on Repupublic of Korea

Official Launch

In 2018, Republic of Korea section for Wiki GLAM page has officially started. In the forthcoming months, the author(s) of this wiki page will compile the national efforts from South Korea to enlist its national GLAM related contents together with UNESCO Korea and other national GLAM institutions. The list can include the National Museum of Korea, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and National Library of Korea.


Collaborative Institution

C.O.D.E Korea (Former Creative Commons Korea) can potentially collaborate with the GLAM institutions in Korea to work on Wiki GLAM Project in the future.


Wikimedians in residence at two Serbian museums


The Wikimedian in residence program is continuing to grow. In the month of August two museums welcomed their first Wikipedians - Museum of Vojvodina and Museum of Vrbas.

Museum of Vojvodina is the largest museum in Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, caring the cultural and historical heritage of diverse nationality living in this province for centuries. The residence in this museum is the second program financed by Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia. From the beginning of August until now, master historian Aleksandar Tumarić - chosen Wikimedian through the open call, has already uploaded over 150, out of 400 images, wrote 64 out of 100 articles, and digitized 5 books. The residence will end by the end of September.


At the same time, Museum of Vrbas is hosting Oksana Mudri-Nedić, also chosen WIR by the open call. Oksana is uploading professional images made by the Museum, and writing articles from the rare sources not so accessible for broader public. This residence will take place for one month, as the beginning of a long-term cooperation with this museum.

The residences and partnerships with this museums are the results of the recently realized GLAM seminars, strongly supported by the Serbian Ministry of Culture.


FindingGLAMs; National Library of Sweden; Crowdsourcing Structured Data on Commons for GLAMs

Wikimedia Sverige, in partnership with UNESCO and Wikimedia Foundation, has launched the project FindingGLAMs. The project will first of all aim to collect data about the GLAM institutions themselves, so that they can be found easily, and secondly work on making digitized material available on the Wikimedia platforms. The project will focus on collections that for different reasons are tricky to include or that include new types of material and will aim to include GLAM professionals to support the work. The work will be described in a series of case studies to make it easier for other Wikimedia affiliates to organize similar GLAM partnerships. This is especially interesting to do know as Structured Data on Commons is being implemented, which will create new opportunities.

National Library of Sweden

The Library Data project, which we started working on last month, is starting to bear fruit. Our first focus is on importing authority data from the database maintained by the National Library of Sweden, and we just concluded the first stage of the process: connecting Wikidata items to entries in the Libris library catalog, using a recently created property. We have successfully added the new identifier to over 60,000 items, which wouldn't have been possible without the hard work of the volunteers who had previously matched these items to their entries in the old edition of the Libris catalog. Amazing! Thanks to them, we now have a strong foundation to build on and can continue working on importing additional information from Libris, such as names, descriptions and nationalities. We have set up a page in English on our wiki where you can read more about the project and our progress.

Crowdsourcing Structured Data on Commons for GLAMs

The Swedish National Heritage Board will together with the Nordic museum, the Swedish Performing Arts Agency and others facilitate a project with the purpose to research, design and prototype technical solutions that would make it much easier and less work intensive for GLAM collections managers to review, copy, and reuse additions to the metadata of the media files they have shared on Wikimedia Commons.

Institutions that would like to contribute and participate in this project can contact david.haskiya﹫raa.se and albin.larsson﹫raa.se. We are also interested in hearing from individuals and organizations with related experience or use cases.


Sum of All Astrolabes; Exploring Collections with Wikidata

Oxford

Oxford's Museum of the History of Science has become the latest UK GLAM institution to partner with Wikimedia, sharing catalogue data about its entire collection of 164 astrolabes and astrolabe parts and, in early September, sharing 156 astrolabe images. Martin has built Astrolabe Explorer during August as a pilot, to encourage collections and private holders of astrolabes to share data and images to make a comprehensive database. "A global collection of astrolabes in linked open data" is a blog post explaining how astrolabes can be described in Wikidata. Silke Ackermann, the director of the Museum, is presenting at a conference in early September to raise interest in the project.

Astrolabe Explorer is the fourth in a series of prototype discovery tools, created to show how Oxford's GLAM collections can be made more visible by using Wikidata to create new pathways:

  • Collection Explorer shows people and places related to a few Oxford collections: mainly Eastern art from the Ashmolean Museum, but also some art from the Bodleian and from the Pitt Rivers Museum.
  • The Sibthorp and Bauer Expedition is currently being developed to show how Wikidata can help to visualise an expedition and the botanical species that were collected in different times and places. In August I added an interactive map and timeline to show the month-by-month progress of the expedition through the Mediterranean in 1786 and 1787. This application also uses Wikidata's tree-of-life data to show species within their family and genus.
  • Manuscript Explorer was the first of these to be created, but has only just become publicly available. It shows all manuscripts known to Wikidata, with Commons images and Wikipedia article previews if they are available.

Over the summer, Collection Explorer was assessed using an online survey answered by 24 students, equally split between undergraduates and graduates. Here is an extract from the independent summary of results:

The majority of users would see some benefit in being able to easily find information on a specific topic within Oxford GLAM collections. Users also indicated that it was very important for them that information be easy to find, complete, and relevant.

Most users saw the value added by Collection Explorer in helping find relevant information about the Buddha in art. They valued the visual features of the prototypes and obvious layout and ‘Pinterest-style display’. However, when prompted for feedback a few mentioned that the information could be more clearly organised and presented.

Users indicated that they would like the option to have a search bar featured as well as filters to help navigate and narrow results.

A few users indicated that having more complete results would assist them in using Collections Explorer for research purposes. One user noted: ‘This could be really useful for my Roman Art paper. If I could search particular people and find any depictions of them with a relevant fact file, that would be revolutionary. It would require a database similar to Beazley archive for Greek pottery.’ While another requested ‘a section on the most upto-date scholarship around each item.’

Other users requested the inclusion of more practical information: where in Oxford the object is located and how to get there. This suggests that while some participants are using Collection Explorer for research purposes, others hope the prototype will facilitate real-life visits to the objects.

Suggestions for improvement

  1. Include ‘search bar’ feature so users can access results directly pertaining to their interests.
  2. Include additional information--cataloguing and/or bibliography--so that users can utilise the prototype for research purposes. The accuracy and relevance of information is very important to users, so that available on Collections Explorer should be able to compete with that accessible on the GLAM institutions’ individual websites.
  3. Incorporate a ‘in Oxford’ feature so that users can see not only where objects orginate from, but where they are located in Oxford.
  4. [I'll paraphrase this point since it refers to another project. The report authors suggest that other resource discovery tools could feed into Collection Explorer: people who use a social media app to request information about a topic would benefit from being directed to the appropriate page in Collection Explorer]

Martin responds: The explorer actually does have links through to the catalogue records for all the items, but in the version that these students saw, the mouse-over effect was subtle, so they may not have realised that they were being presented with active links. The links are now more evident. A "search bar" (not actually search, but auto-complete) is present in Manuscript Explorer and could be adapted for Collection Explorer.

IFLA-WLIC Wikidata presentation by User:Fuzheado in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Wikimedia DC member and Wikidata trainer Andrew Lih was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the IFLA-WLIC 2018 conference to give a Wikidata workshop at the largest annual international gathering of librarians. The workshop (Google Slides) was attended by 40-50 attendees and was the first time Wikidata had been presented at that conference.

Wiknic

As a part of the Great American Wiknic, Wikimedians gathered for some food and community:

Wikimedia So Cal, and SoCal Bronies held a wiknic, San Diego/August 2018 at Shelter Island;

Cascadia Wikimedians held a wiknic, Seattle Wiknic 2018 at Washington Park Arboretum;

Florida Librarians of Wikipedia held a wiknic, Tampa/Wiknic 2018, at the Arthenia L. Joyner University Area Community Library .

Wikidata Tour Down Under

Andy Mabbett is in Australia in September and early October 2018, talking about Wikidata and WikiCite, as well as their sister projects, and how they impact GLAMs, and Open Science, as well as explaining how institutions can work with the community of volunteers who maintain those projects, to mutual benefit.

WikiCite 2018

Applications to attend WikiCite 2018 in Berkeley, California (including travel funding requests) are now open, including the opportunity for would- be speakers to pitch sessions.

PIDapalooza 2019

PIDapalooza is a conference about Permanent IDentfers, with a strong Wikidata component. Registration for #PIDapalooza19 in Dublin, Ireland, January 23-24, is now open. A call for pers/ presentations wil follow shortly

Wikimania, Wikimedians in Residence, Structured Data on Commons, and upcoming conferences

Wikimania 2018

The Wikimedia Foundation's GLAM team attended Wikimania Cape Town. It was great to see many of you there! We held several sessions during Learning Days - both on GLAM projects and partnerships and on structured data partnerships workflows. The main conference also included several sessions about Structured Data on Commons, including a panel about how GLAM projects related to knowledge equity can benefit from it.

Structured Data on Commons

In the past months, the Wikimedia Commons community brainstormed about the Wikidata properties that will be needed to describe media files on Wikimedia Commons with structured data. The proposed properties have now been brought together and grouped in one page. Please take a close look and leave your feedback, as this first collection of properties will be used at the start when Structured Data on Commons is deployed!
