Empowering Italian GLAMs
ByThe first phase of the "Empowering Italian GLAMs" project, funded by the Wikimedia Foundation, concluded with impactful outcomes for Italy’s cultural sector. This initiative provided training and resources to professionals from Italian GLAM institutions—Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums—enhancing their engagement with Wikimedia platforms and promoting open access to cultural assets. Through workshops, webinars, and one-on-one guidance, participants learned best practices for contributing to Wikimedia Commons and Italian Wikipedia. The project fostered collaboration and knowledge-sharing, aiming to empower GLAM professionals to independently contribute digital content that reflects Italy's rich heritage.
The project’s outputs included the uploading of a range of digitized cultural materials, from historical texts to artifacts, which were previously inaccessible to the public online. Collaborating institutions not only increased their visibility but also advanced digital inclusion in the cultural sector. Moving forward, the success of this phase provides a strong foundation for future expansion. By building on the newly formed network, the project seeks to deepen support for GLAM institutions, empowering them to engage continuously with global audiences through Wikimedia, thus enriching the world’s access to Italian heritage. Wikimedia Italia also plans to develop an app to streamline uploads to Commons and help GLAMs pursue an open content policy via a data management plan.
