Open Midiateca: Licensing and analysis of collections of Midiateca Capixaba
ByOpen Midiateca
In December 2022, Wiki Movimento Brasil (WMB) and the Secretary of State for Culture of Espírito Santo (SeCult-ES) began the project "Open Midiateca: Licensing and analysis of collections of Midiateca Capixaba", in collaboration with InternetLab. The project aims at the creation of an open licensing policy for SeCult-ES that will be daily used by all the State GLAM institutions as a guide for the licensing of works in their collections when making them available on online platforms (especially Midiateca Capixaba and Wikimedia projects). It also aims at preparing models for its use and dissemination, and material and guidance content for future licensing decision-making. So, the main purpose of this project is to guarantee legality in compliance with Brazilian copyright legislation when uploading media and metadata under open licenses to the Internet.
The project will deal with a sample of 40,000 items of historical and cultural value from eight GLAM institutions. The main phases of this project are:
- Analysis of collections of each of the institutions for understanding the specific licensing layers of each collection/work; and the specificities required by each format/support.
- Creation of a Licensing Guide in a digital format based on the evaluated collection. This guide will be used by Espírito Santo State GLAM institutions for daily licensing decision-making.
- Creation of a Complexity Scale referring to the status of the evaluated collections and future acquired ones in terms of open licensing.
- Indication of Referral Strategies based on the evaluated collection. This phase will identify copyright-free materials and protected materials that may receive open licenses.
- Compatibilization for notices and donations aims to structure GLAM institutions to receive new collections from institutions, city halls and also individuals.
Midiateca Capixaba (Media Library of Espírito Santo) is a project of SeCult-ES for digitizing and organizing the collections from state GLAM institutions in a unique online platform. Until now, three stages are confirmed. The first one involves the institutions directly related to SeCult-ES (such as Biblioteca Pública do Espírito Santo, Galeria Homero Massena and Museu de Arte do Espírito Santo Dionísio Del Santo) and collections from National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan-ES) and Federal University of Espírito Santo. In the second stage, works produced by SeCult and the ones funded by it will be uploaded. And in the last stage, collections from Rádio e Televisão Espírito Santo (RTV/ES), Arquivo Público do Estado do Espírito Santo and Palácio Anchieta will complete the platform.
All media of this huge collection will also be available under CC0 and CC-BY-SA licenses on Wikimedia platforms through the GLAM of Midiateca Capixaba.
Portable Museum brochure in Spanish
We are very happy to announce the launch of the Spanish version of our Portable Museum brochure, which presents a tech-kit of low-cost equipment for digitization of both bidimensional and tridimensional objects and how to use it. The material also includes information on how to start a GLAM Wiki initiative and guidelines on legal aspects to make collections available under open licenses.
The Museu Portátil Project was coordinated by the art historian and curator Carolina Matos in a partnership with Goethe-Institut São Paulo, Instituto Moreira Salles and Wiki Movimento Brasil. Two GLAM-wiki initiatives have emerged as a result of this partnership: GLAM do Museu da Capitania de Ilhéus and GLAM da Santa Casa de Misericórdia da Bahia. These institutions have already uploaded 601 pictures of their collections, including the UNESCO awarded documental series Livros do Banguê - a set of eleven books with information on the enslaved in Brazil. You may read more about Museu Portátil Project in our 2022 January Report.
