Launch of Wikipedia in African Libraries Project Pilot Cohort
The Wikipedia in African Libraries course which is an adaptation of the OCLC Libraries + Wikipedia Better Together curriculum is primarily designed to train African librarians to work in an online platform as they learn how to evaluate the quality and reliability of individual articles, edit and create content of local and personal interest on Wikipedia and sister projects with laid down benchmarks for quality and relevance. It is expected that the course will also equip librarians with the knowledge and skills to understand Wikipedia as a veritable resource for dissemination of information and a teaching tool that promotes quality education thereby increasing access to the resource and serving user communities all over Africa, better.
The pilot cohort, comprising of 60 librarians chosen from more than 140 applicants across different library types in Africa,was launched on 16 November and will help test the adapted OCLC curriculum up till 20th December, 2020.
Testing the adapted curriculum
The adapted course broadly revolves around the core aspects of Wikipedia and is delivered online via AfLIA's Moodle platform and complemented by weekly live sessions via Zoom. The weekly sessions are facilitated by the Wikipedian-in-Residence and guest presenter to expound on the week's topic.The guest presenters are experienced African Wikimedians who are active in the GLAM sector as well.
