Accessibility through audio descriptions, GLAM tutorials, WikidataCon 2021 and more updates on Brazilian GLAMs
Audio description course
In the context of the course, a resource with instructions on how to audio describe artwork was produced and shared on Commons.
Accessbility is one of the major goals to achieve when it comes to sharing collections online. To better serve accessibility goals, Wiki Movimento Brasil partnered up with the Museu Paulista and Museus Acessíveis for an online course of audio descriptions to be implemented on Wikimedia.
The course gathered remotely 30 participants that had the assignment to produce 90 audio descriptions for paintings, photographies and objects from the museum's collection available on Wikimedia Commons through the WMB and Museu Paulista GLAM-Wiki partnership. The programme included 3 classes for guiding the participants on the audio descriptions techniques and norms. In one of our meetings, two visually impaired people brilliantly shared their experience with the audio descriptions as a resource for accessing culture.
The works of art were selected by the museum staff and Wiki Movimento Brasil created a web semantic Wikibook to facilitate the activity.
The book showcases the images and, through Wikidata integration, provides for the user a datasheet with valuable information for contextualizing and supporting the beginning of the writing process of the audio description, such as creator, date, material used, dimensions, Commons category etc.
You can navigate the Wikibook with audio descriptions here.
To facilitate interaction with GLAMs in the Wiki Loves Bahia campaign, WMB also produced a tutorial on how to create GLAM-Wiki initiatives, according to the needs and ways of using Brazilian GLAMs. Even though the goal of the tutorial is to facilitate and help the entry of Bahia GLAMs into the Wikimedia ecosystem, it can also be used by any institution that wants to share collections.
The tutorial is available on the Outreach Dashboard, in Portuguese, and contains three modules:
- Introduction to the Wikimedia Ecosystem in Portuguese
- Share your GLAM in the Wikimedia Ecosystem in Portuguese
- Upload your GLAM collection on the Wikimedia platforms in Portuguese
And when a person finishes the tutorial, they should be able to answer:
- What are the Wikimedia platforms?
- What is a GLAM-Wiki?
- How to get started in the Wikimedia ecosystem?
- How to register a GLAM on Wikimedia Commons?
- How to improve a GLAM item on Wikidata?
- How to use Wikipedia when the topic is a GLAM institution?
- How to share a GLAM collection on the Wikimedia platforms?
- What are the basic steps of a GLAM-Wiki upload?
- How to have a Wikimedian in Residence?
Abre-te Código hackathon
On December 14th, Goethe-Institut São Paulo will announce the winners from the Abre-te Código hackathon at an award live ceremony on YouTube. As mentioned on earlier GLAM Newsletters, the hackathon is the first one in Brazil to gather 14 cultural institutions providing cultural open data so that participants could be creative with their collections and create innovative solutions for expanding access to cultural heritage. The teams are running for prizes to keep developing their prototypes and two trips to Germany will be drawn for the participants to meet the Coding da Vinci headquarters.
Wiki Movimento Brasil will cohost WikidataCon 2021
We're proud to announce that Wiki Movimento Brasil wil cohost WikidataCon 2021 with Wikimedia Germany! The conference will have a hybrid and distributed format with remote and in person activities. Other communities are incentivated to organize their own local events as well, but we'll have a special support for the organization of the event in Brazil and we'll take part on the general event programme with WMDE. This will be the first global Wikimedia event organized in Brazil! We're super excited with this partnership: it will certainly be a great opportunity for learning and for sharing with the global community the projects we've been developing in Brazil with Wikidata. You can check out the official announcement by WMDE on this page.
Wiki Loves Monuments Brasil 2020 winners
We're glad to share with the community the winning images of Wiki Loves Monuments Brasil 2020! Brazil was the 5th top contributor of this year's competition with a total of 15,152 uploaded images.
Festa da Wiki Lusofonia 2021
To celebrate Wikipedia's 20th birthday, the Lusophone community is gathering under the Festa da Wiki Lusofonia 2021 project. The major idea is to collaborate on a series of events for strengthening our community in terms of strategic planning and bringing new users for the Wikimedia projects in Portuguese. All initiatives in Portuguese are welcome to join the celebration! We'll have dedicated spaces for GLAM-Wiki discussions and other thematic events.
Updates on GLAM-Wiki partnerships
Moreira Salles Institute GLAM
In October, the Instituto Moreira Salles GLAM shared a batch of new 376 photographs, in the category Wiki Movement Brazil's initiative with IMS. Among the items are photos of Rio de Janeiro at the beginning of the 20th century, by several well-known photographers, such as Marc Ferrez e Augusto Malta.
The metadata of these pictures was already available on Wikidata, from previous uploads in the last few months, mostly in these two batches:
We hope users from the community are interested in enhancing the categorization of these images and in using them in their own languages and Wikipedias.
Musica Brasilis GLAM
The first batches of metadata and images were shared in the partnership between Wiki Movimento Brasil and Musica Brasilis, a portal that makes available Brazilian music repertoires of all times and genres, but mostly metadata about Brazilian composers and scores.
The first batch was composed of 79 new items and 196 enhanced items about Brazilian composers on Wikidata. They are available in these three batches:
Among these first batches, there was an item for the composer Antônio Carlos Gomes and, in the second batch made available through the partnership, Musica Brasilis chose to share five music sheets by him and together with their metadata.
The Wikidata batches are these:
The five music sheets are in the category Wiki Movimento Brasil's initiative with Musica Brasilis.
In the last month, the Musica Brasilis license was also created and it is available on the page Musica Brasilis license.
Hercule Florence and Brazilian Studies Institutes GLAMs
The Wiki Movimento Brasil partnerships with Instituto Hercule Florence and the Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros also gained Wikipedia portals for the initiatives. Both are complete but without their logos, because their Commons licenses (or OTRS) are not available yet.
The Instituto Hercule Florence already shared a file on Commons before, the Aimé-Adrien Taunay notebook, through an edit-at-thon with the Paulista Museum GLAM.
The Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros already has an activity available on the portal, related to the partnership. Giovanna Fontenelle, a WMB member, gave a lecture in a class by the director of the institution, professor Diana Vital. Her presentation was about Wikimedia platforms, educational uses, GLAMs and how to edit. The class was the IEB 5040 - Arts of producing meanings for the past - Collections and sources in History of Education.
Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science new partnership!
The Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC) is a major organization focused on scientific, technological, educational and cultural development in Brazil that brings together different Brazilian scientific societies. Through a connection with the Memory Center Amélia Império Hamburger (CMAIH), Wiki Movimento Brasil had a special meeting with members of the scientific societies to explore Wikimedia potentials for combating disinformation and promoting scientific knowledge. The meeting also had the objective to highlight knowledge gaps on different science fields that the societes can start looking into. Soon, we will bring more news from this partnership that promises a lot of work and improvements for Wikimedia projects in Portuguese!
