Andrew Lih joins Smithsonian Institution as Wikimedian at Large
Andrew Lih, Effie Kapsalis, Kelly Doyle at the Smithsonian open access launch, February 2020
Starting in November 2020, Andrew Lih will be working with the Smithsonian Institution as Wikimedian at large, focusing on open access projects with a broad range of departments and affiliates at the largest museum and research organization in the United States. The Smithsonian announced their open access policy on February 25, 2020, while releasing 3.1 million files under a CC0 license. This clears the way for more comprehensive use of images, 2D and 3D objects on Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata and Wikipedia.
He will be working with Effie Kapsalis, Smithsonian's Senior Digital Program Officer and a leader in the institution's move towards open access. His work will complement Kelly Doyle, already working as a Wikipedian in Residence at the Smithsonian in the role of open knowledge coordinator, focusing on the American Women's History Initiative. This position builds on the foundational work of former Wikipedians in residence Sarah Stierch and Dominic Byrd-McDevitt and will encompass the development of practices, tools and training for various units of the Smithsonian for better Wikimedia engagement.
